Olivier Theysken's Real Ricci Girl

Tue, 10/14/08 — 05:06:09 PM

>> Hubert de Givenchy had Audrey Hepburn, Giorgio Armani has Cate Blanchett, Carolina Herrera has Renee Zellweger, and Olivier Theyskens continues to align himself with Reese Witherspoon at Nina Ricci — because, as it's put in the November 2008 issue of Vogue, "every newly named artistic director of a fashion house in Paris knows he needs a huge Hollywood actress."

According to Theyskens, the match just fell into place: ""When I met her at Rochas, it was not the right fit.  But when I started at Ricci, I had a strong feeling about her being a real Ricci girl, and I showed her some drawings and she was really willing."  Plus — "We are the same age, so we have some roots.  I am quite fascinated by roots of generations."

Recalling the first time they publicly debuted a collaboration — Reese's canary cocktail Nina Ricci number for the 2007 Golden Globes — the actress invited Olivier to visit her in LA: "So he came to my house and sat on the floor and started sketching.  Of course I put out tons of food and he didn't eat anything.  He brought out two kinds of fabric — he brought out one gray and one yellow.  And he said, 'I think you are like this! I think you are like a party! I think you are wearing a yellow dress!'"

Olivier was nervous about the whole ordeal: "The yellow dress with the bustier — for me it was the first thing that the world would see from me at Ricci. But still, I wanted it to fit with Reese. I was afraid. And it was Reese who picked that fabric. This was one of my favorite fabrics! She just fell right into it. She is very intuitive."

After that first frenzied collaboration, everything feel into place, according to Olivier: "If I do her an elegant dress, she can dress so elegant. If I find a dress, she will find a way to be at her ease. I feel OK — I'm Olivier doing dresses! I'm superhappy about working, and everything is getting more fluid."  And that is how he came to be photographed with her in Vogue, Reese wearing two dresses he made especially for the occasion.

Windswept Natasha Poly Blows Nina Ricci Fall 2008 Out of the Water

Fri, 07/18/08 — 09:36:59 AM

>> After going with up-and-coming models for Fall 2007 and Spring 2008, Olivier Theyskens has pulled out the big guns, making a splash for Fall 2008 with Natasha Poly.  The stop-action, hair flipping shots definitely help achieve Olivier's goal of transforming the romantic label into one with more edge. If these images by Mario Sorrenti don't sell the brand, I don't know what will.

Fashion Darling Olivier Theyskens Commits Fashion Don't

Sun, 06/01/08 — 05:01:03 PM

>> It has already been well-reported that Sarah Jessica Parker wore the same Nina Ricci dress to the New York Sex and the City premiere last week as Vogue contributing editor and socialite Lauren Santo Domingo wore to the Costume Insitute Gala on May 5.

More interesting, however, is the story behing the mix-up — as Cathy Horyn reports, both Nina Ricci designer Olivier Theyskens and Mario Grauso, the president of the fashion division at Puig, which owns Nina Ricci, assured SJP that the gown had not been worn in anything but magazine shoots.  When she came to find out that wasn't the case, she felt deceived:

In the big picture, this is not important, but there is a relationship between the entertainment industry and fashion . . . my affection for the dress hasn’t changed, but what they did was so short-sighted. It’s just unethical and disappointing that they would allow the dress to be worn again.

Parker says she mentioned to Olivier during the fitting that she was surprised the dress hadn't already been worn:

He didn’t say, ‘Well, actually I just escorted Lauren down the red carpet at the Met.’  I just wish it had been handled differently and they had been straight about it.

When Cathy asked Grauso for a response, he of course said, "I’m upset that she’s upset.”  But then he went on to fumble for excuses — he clearly knew that Lauren had worn the dress to an event before, because he said he had no reason to mention Santo Domingo:

'Is Lauren a celebrity?  It depends on how you look at it.' He said he and Theyskens mainly thought of her as a friend. He then asked—somewhat incredulously, I thought—“Does everybody look at Style.com?'

A bad move on Nina Ricci's part, especially when they were just becoming red carpet gold.  I wonder what Anna Wintour, who so strongly favors Olivier, thinks about it?
