Models Get Their Due at 2009 Costume Institute Gala

Wed, 10/29/08 — 12:18:39 PM

>> Hints at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala theme have been swirling since May — first, it was thought to be an ode to Marc Jacobs, and then an ode to fashion muses.  Now that the official announcement has come out, we learn that both subjects are involved, just not quite in the way that was originally thought: the May 4 gala rings in "The Model as Muse," with Marc Jacobs as honorary chair, and Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, and Justin Timberlake as co-chairs.

The accompanying exhibit, which runs May 6 to Aug. 9, will explore the evolution of models and "their roles in projecting and sometimes inspiring the fashion of their respective eras," with special focus on one of the first publicly known models, Marion Morehouse; the first supermodel, Lisa Fonssagrives; fifties mannequins Suzy Parker, Dovima, Sunny Harnett, and Dorian Leigh; sixties icons Jean Shrimpton, Moffitt, Twiggy, and Veruschka; Seventies faces Jerry Hall, Iman, and Janice Dickinson; the supermodel trinity of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell; Nineties “It” girls Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Shalom Harlow; and more recently, Gisele Bundchen.

As Harold Koda, curator of the Costume Institute, explained: "We look at the power of clothing, fashion photography and the model to project the look of an era. With a mere gesture, or the line of her body, a truly stellar model can sum up the attitude of her time, creating an alluring synergy between herself and the clothing to communicate a designer’s message to the wider world."

Seventy haute couture and ready-to-wear looks, plus photography, runway images, and video footage of models, rock stars, socialites and actresses who set the tone for each era will emphasize the theme, but most exciting of all — think of all the models who will be representing at the gala.

August 2008 Vogue Italia: Still A Fan of Black Clothes, But What About Black Models?

Wed, 07/30/08 — 03:50:24 PM

>> The August 2008 issue of Vogue Paris is dedicated to Yves Saint Laurent, and likewise, the editors at Vogue Italia had their own August 2008 YSL tribute in mind.  The follow up to the hugely successful July "Black Issue" features Karen Elson, Linda Evangelista, Guinevere van Seenus, and Iris Strubegger in a funereal Steven Meisel cover story, "Silent." In one picture, a huge headstone features the name "Black," strangely implying that "black is dead."  I wonder if the message was purposeful?  A strange choice to follow up the celebratory nature of July's issue, especially considering that there are no black models in this editorial . . .

“

She was full of life and wit. She was beyond polite. So many, like Linda and Christy, had periods of being moody and difficult. She was always perfect.

Linda Evangelista Loses a Vanity Fair Cover, Gains a Fall 2008 Prada Campaign

Mon, 07/28/08 — 10:02:39 AM

>> Linda Evangelista may not have landed that rumored fold-out September 2008 Vanity Fair supermodel cover extravaganza (fellow model Carla Bruni-Sarkozy does the honors instead) but she still has her Fall 2008 Prada campaign.  Out from the shadows she comes, to have a buttoned-up, laced-up go at this matronly Steven Meisel-photographed set that leaves me feeling . . . well, a little bit blue.

A Sultry Naomi and Prim Linda in the First YSL, Prada Fall 2008 Ads

Thu, 06/19/08 — 10:19:02 PM

>> A Vogue Italia cover yesterday, a YSL campaign today . . . Naomi Campbell's on a roll.  I wonder if the PR people are all trying to capitalize on her trial today, which is sure to garner a press report or two?  In any case, this Fall 2008 campaign image — shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin at the YSL headquarters in Paris — looks to be very much in the same vein as Kate Moss's Spring 2008 ads for the brand.

Meanwhile, Linda Evangelista's first ad for Prada has also debuted.  She looks about as startled as I feel; I'm still getting used to not seeing Sasha Pivovarova as the brand's face.  The supermodel was photographed by Steven Meisel back in April in a New York studio, and the first print campaign images will be in the August issue of Vogue Italia.
