“We never thought of Co-Op as a place where you find secondary collections,” Barneys fashion director Julie Gilhart said recently. “It’s a place where you find something different.” Barneys is celebrating 25 years of Co-Op this year, and in honor of the occasion, Co-Op regulars like Marc by Marc Jacobs, Vena Cava, Fallon, and Alexander Wang have created an exclusive collection of goodies. Anna Wintour Fetes CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists

Anna Wintour hosted an annual event for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists Wednesday night in her West Village townhouse. The ten designers gather chez Wintour to showcase fashion fund-sponsored design projects and mingle with past finalists and current CFDA members.

This year Google's Marissa Mayer was the guest of honor, as each finalist was challenged with designing pieces inspired by the Google search engine. (In 2008 and 2009 the project was sponsored by L'Oreal Paris color cosmetics.)

Designers arrived with models (Alexa Adams and Flora Gill of Ohne Titel with Dree Hemingway) and actresses (Waris Ahluwalia of House of Waris with Rose Byrne) to show off their one-of-a-kind creations. George Esquivel dressed Kemp Muhl in colorful "Google shoes" with search box back tags, and Wayne Lee designed a neoprene vest that could carry a 15 inch laptop.

The event was also attended by Vena Cava's Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock, Rogan Gregory, Thom Browne, Rachel Roy, Vera Wang, Patrick Robinson, and Georgina Chapman.

Meet the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Finalists

Although we mentioned the star-studded cover story, our personal favorite sitting from the November issue of Vogue, on newsstands today, is that introducing the ten 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists.

In its six years, the fashion fund has nurtured and championed young, American design talent such as Proenza Schouler, Doo-Ri Chung, Alexander Wang, Rodarte and Philip Crangi.

Today Vogue.com has interviews with each of the 2009 finalists-Sophie Theallet, House of Waris, Ohne Titel, Wayne, Esquivel Shoes, Monique Péan, Gary Graham, Spurr, Patrik Ervell, and Alabama Chanin. “We had very strong applicant pool this year, particularly among the jewelers,” said Vogue's Anna Wintour in a statement. “The ten finalists we selected are a talented, diverse group, who are building healthy independent businesses in challenging times.”

The winner, who will be paired with an industry mentor and receive a $200,000 cash prize, and two runners-up will be announced at an event on November 16 in New York.

Wayne Launches Handbags Alongside Layer-Friendly Spring 2010 Collection

>> Fashion Week has just barely begun, but so far, designers are still going hard for a couple of looks - cut-outs are still sticking, and leggings are being reborn with patches and mesh pieces. Both were in the mix at Wayne, as was a skort, which Style.com has already deemed a Spring "fascination."

Wayne Lee channeled minimalist sculpture for Spring 2010 - but the draped jersey dresses, aforementioned cut-outs, and bright yellow against a shades of gray palette vaguely call to mind Alexander Wang's work. A number of designers are adding accessories this season, and Wayne is among them: a new leather handbag collection spans five silhouettes, a duffle and slouchy hobo among them; and a few pieces of jewelry - sculpted rings and cuffs - will also be produced.

Get to Know the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Nominees

>> This year's ten CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists have just been announced - they range from the eco-conscious (Monique Pean, Alabama Chanin) to cobblers (Esquivel Shoes) to straight-up womenswear designers (Sophie Theallet, Wayne, Ohne Titel, Gary Graham). Anna Wintour noted, “We had very strong applicant pool this year, particularly among the jewelers" - here's looking at lucky jewelry nominees Pean and House of Waris. The winner and runners-up, who are bestowed with cash prizes and industry mentorship, will be announced Nov. 16 at the annual gala.

Until then, an introduction (minus menswear nominees Patrik Ervell and Simon Spurr of Spurr).

Look Of The Day, Coutorture Style

This past fashion week we attended the Fall 08 Wayne presentation. The inspiration for the collection was aviation and though no specific mention was made to Amelia Earhart, she popped into our minds as a likely source of inspiration. This photo, taken in 1928, shows Earhart's slick, tomboyish style which, eighty years later, could blow any modern fashionista right out of the water. Earheart was a rebel who broke records, smiled coyly, and wore low-slung silk blouses. We'll spare you the look of the day from the corner of Mott Street (though an admirable outfit can always be found) in favor of someone whose style went beyond trousers and blouses.

Ecco Domani Winner Wayne Presentation

We just popped into the Wayne A/W 08 presentation downtown where the breezy collection really lifted our spirits. On a rainy day the 1940's aviation themed collection made us wish we were high above the clouds. Looks like Wayne's got quite a following as it was full of young, pretty things, throwing back the booze. While the girls slowly moved across four platforms, a man sat in the corner playing harmonica and singing in a very lonesome, Steinbeck sort of way. Our video, and photos from the collection, coming to you shortly.

Expect a Spring 2010 Season Full of "Safe" Ad Campaigns

>> Fashion houses tended toward casting celebrities or established, "pretty" faces for their Fall 2009 campaigns, and it sounds like despite the fact that the Spring 2010 runways were flooded with new faces - because so many established models were sitting it out - Spring 2010 campaign season will bring more of the same. In an interview published today, Nick Knight tells the Independent UK:

"My aim has always been to push at the boundaries of what is and isn't beautiful. Instead of our perception of beauty opening up, it's becoming more narrow all the time. To make money, the industry is increasingly catering to the lowest common denominator and, as far as the people who run the big companies are concerned, anything even slightly out of the ordinary frightens people. But anyone with a brain knows that it is the quirkiness and imperfection in a person that attracts other people. That is completely obvious to human beings; it's just when it gets to a corporate level that it all falls apart."

Speculating on Fall 2009 Campaign Season

>> For Spring 2009 more than ever, brands stuck with campaign models who guarantee a sell - supermodels like Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss for Versace or Claudia Schiffer for Yves Saint Laurent, Daria Werbowy for Roberto Cavalli - or the classic blonde hair-blue eye combination that Toni Garrn and Anna Maria Jagodzinska's campaign sweeps represented. Also of note for the season, Prada and Balenciaga's decisions to go with big groups of models - eight and ten, respectively.

With Fall 2009 campaign season under way, it sounds like at least a couple of brands have decided to break from that latter part of last season's formula - Wayne Sterling of The Imagist reports:

"It is too early to say and too tenuous to reveal who's holding/confirming what these days but rest assured it is the striking and the extreme that seem to be filtering into the next phase. Among the buzz I picked up by some art directors is a disenchantment with the 'multiples' ideal, that concept of an army of models rocking as many of the looks from the show as possible while waving as many possible it-bags as can be crammed into a double page. Two VERY big brands have already gone 'Only Girl.'"

The most likely candidate from that description of packing the models in seems to be Prada - so does that mean Prada is one of those already-decided brands, and Miuccia's current favorite exclusive Ymre Stiekema is going to finally get a main season campaign under her belt?
