Stella McCartney and Friends Celebrate Holiday Windows in London

Stella McCartney celebrated the illumination of her Bruton Street store in London last night with a performance by Mighty Boosh star Noel Fielding. "We're going to give Christmas a gothic slant," said the actor/comedian. "Think black snowmen and Santa with eyeliner." McCartney and friends drank champagne and Guinness, while an exuberant Fielding entertained guests-wearing a printed mini dress from McCartney's spring 2010 collection.

Twelve British Models, Twelve i-D Covers for March 2009

>> Last week, Edward Enninful was in Goa, India, styling a shoot for Vogue, but this week, it's all about i-D and England - he brought together twelve British faces - past and present - for i-D's March 2009 Best of British issue. "The confirmations were instant - it was about doing something for England, and models have been so faceless - British models always have personality."

Together with Solve Sundsbo, Enninful styled each of the twelve covers to bring out the character of the individual model - "I went though a great thought process - we didn't want clichés and stereotypes" - "rock 'n' roll Kate" Moss as a mature woman and fashion designer, "ageless" British models like Twiggy, newcomer Eliza Cummins, who is also moonlighting on the new Dazed & Confused (NSFW), symbolizing British grit with a snarl. To further the emphasis on personality, each cover face has her own cover quote summing up her outlook, from Stella Tennant - "I don't really fit the box" - to Agyness Deyn - "Feel the fear and do it anyway." Leave it to Naomi Campbell to bring the non sequitur: "I love a Sunday roast."

Models Get Their Due at 2009 Costume Institute Gala

>> Hints at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala theme have been swirling since May - first, it was thought to be an ode to Marc Jacobs, and then an ode to fashion muses. Now that the official announcement has come out, we learn that both subjects are involved, just not quite in the way that was originally thought: the May 4 gala rings in "The Model as Muse," with Marc Jacobs as honorary chair, and Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, and Justin Timberlake as co-chairs.

The accompanying exhibit, which runs May 6 to Aug. 9, will explore the evolution of models and "their roles in projecting and sometimes inspiring the fashion of their respective eras," with special focus on one of the first publicly known models, Marion Morehouse; the first supermodel, Lisa Fonssagrives; fifties mannequins Suzy Parker, Dovima, Sunny Harnett, and Dorian Leigh; sixties icons Jean Shrimpton, Moffitt, Twiggy, and Veruschka; Seventies faces Jerry Hall, Iman, and Janice Dickinson; the supermodel trinity of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell; Nineties “It” girls Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Shalom Harlow; and more recently, Gisele Bundchen.

As Harold Koda, curator of the Costume Institute, explained: "We look at the power of clothing, fashion photography and the model to project the look of an era. With a mere gesture, or the line of her body, a truly stellar model can sum up the attitude of her time, creating an alluring synergy between herself and the clothing to communicate a designer’s message to the wider world."

Seventy haute couture and ready-to-wear looks, plus photography, runway images, and video footage of models, rock stars, socialites and actresses who set the tone for each era will emphasize the theme, but most exciting of all - think of all the models who will be representing at the gala.

mary kate: the next twiggy?

Yeah, we know, we're about a year too late on that little scoop. Oh well.

So then the very un-PC L.A.-based designers Randy and Moss thought it would be absolutely hilar to serve Mary Kate up a good old home-cooked meal of “Save Mary-Kate” t-shirts. After all, she was in need of something substantial, right? Unfortunately, the big-ol' powers-that-be, also known as Mary Kate’s lawyers, didn’t want to lose that episode of Iron Chef – they served right back a cease and desist order. I bet you can guess who won.

That &*@# media just won’t leave our favorite cocarexic alone – woe is me, the life of a multimillionaire teenage superstar. At least all her press isn’t so bad - last month, the NY Times declared Mary Kate a “fashion star.” Karen Berenson, a stylist in both New York and L.A., was quoted saying Mary Kate “makes skinny girls in baggy clothes look cool.” It’s clearly the making of a fashion icon, right? In any case, Mary Kate is now the go-to girl for “Bobo style,” short for bohemian bourgeois.

Since there’s been so much fuss about it all as of late, we figure wtf mate, let’s take a looksie.

Numba 1 Stunna:

These are the outfits MK (brunette) and Ashley (blonde) wore to the Costume Institute Gala last night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, organized by Anna Wintour of Vogue editorial fame. Ashley wore an Oscar de la Renta gown, whereas MK wore a dress that she identified by the store where she bought it, What Comes Around Goes Around, according to NY Times.

We must say that while MK’s frock seems slightly more Victorian than decidedly bohemian, we’re a big fan of the red ethnic beads she’s got around that tiny little neck of hers.

Outfit Numba Deuce Deuce:

Perpetually with coffee cup in hand, we guess MK’s gotta get that fix somehow, right? We’ve always loved the big mod-looking plastic earrings and the huge Jackie-O jobs. As for the bobo factor, we’re definitely panting after the black leggings-mini skirt combo, especially because no one needs to know where those leggings came from. Dior? Target? They’re both French, right? And those cowboy boots, oh those cowboy boots…probably at the top of our most-coveted list. Hot stuff, MK, hot stuff.

Outfit Numba Menage a Trois:

We’ve gotta say this outfit’s our hands-down favorite. MK’s pretty in pink in a baggy slip dress under a black cardigan. As weird as it may seem, the hole-y black stockings and chuck taylors really work for her (note to self: new DIY project – feed new puppy the stockings). But in all honesty, the real outfit maker: the white plastic bag tote. Scrumptious.

Outfit Four Real (she's actually wearing what we're seeing?):

This outfit, on the other hand…we have reservations. MK’s got a big grey tee…um…stylin’ (one can just imagine how long she had to come up with that jewel). Honestly, this is just not a good representation of a fashion icon, in our opinion. We do endorse the cute ballet flats and bangle bracelets, as any fashion-conscious people would, but the whole shower curtain/sari skirt thing…not so much. Next time, try a different look, MK.

Michael Kors Bans Models Under 16, Natalia Vodianova Talks Post-Pregnancy Eating Disorder at Boston Health Forum

>> Last night, Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, and Natalia Vodianova gathered in Boston to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Health Matters: Weight and Wellness in the World of Fashion," where they addressed current industry efforts to prevent eating disorders.

During the discussion, Kors vowed to raise the minimum age limit on models he hires to 16. “I think super-young girls used to be the exception,’’ Kors told The Boston Globe. “There’s always been a Twiggy, or a model who is very young. But they were few and far between. Now, they’re completely common. That’s something I see as a huge problem." He continued during the panel: “The age of models really has to become a priority. We need to give these girls a chance to grow up.”

Kors also noted that he doesn't book models who show any sign of an eating disorder: “We don’t book her. You shouldn’t support it or encourage it or support it, just say no.”

Costume Institute Gala Designers and Their Guests: Who's Coming, Who's Not

>> This year's supermodel-centric Costume Institute Gala is coming up soon - Monday - and it's shaping up to be the toned-down affair that was expected: a number of designers who usually attend are not, tables are not selling as well as in the past, and there are even rumors that Vogue is having model attendees pay an entry fee to the tune of $7,500.

Versace has decided to join Burberry, Roberto Cavalli, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Alberta Ferretti in the not-buying-a-table camp, and Celine and Fendi are not actively participating in the event at all. Domenico Dolce, Stefano Gabbana, Christopher Bailey, L'Wren Scott, Suphie Buhai and Lisa Mayock of Vena Cava, Erin Fetherston are all said to be forgoing the festivities, and Christy Turlington, despite this year's theme, turned down her invitation as she will be out of the country.

As for those who are attending, sponsor Marc Jacobs has his fiance Lorenzo Martone "semi-hosting" a table of his own, and co-host Kate Moss is supposedly after Stephen Jones for a specially-crafted turban decorated with Shaun Leane brooch for the occasion, and is rumored to have asked Jacobs for a Veronica Lake-inspired gown. Meanwhile, Chanel Iman left Vogue Monday with her gown of choice in hand, hinting "I smell a JLO red carpet moment. Watch out JLO!!" and Lauren Santo Domingo is apparently choosing between blue and green sequins.

Vogue Pays Tribute to Model Muses for May 2009

>> The wait is over. The May 2009 issue of Vogue, wholly dedicated to models in anticipation of this year's Model as Muse Costume Insitute Gala next month has debuted, and Liya Kebede, Natalia Vodianova, Anna Maria Jagodzinska, Isabeli Fontana, Lara Stone, Jourdan Dunn, Raquel Zimmermann, Caroline Trentini,and Natasha Poly all made the final cut, wearing what appears to be Rodarte. This cover, shot by Steven Meisel, is notable not only because of its subjects, but because it marks the third consecutive cover to feature a woman of color on the front.

Inside, Natalia Vodianova, who has been called "the Baby" by Steven Meisel and makeup artist Pat McGrath since they starting working with her, collaborated with them again on a tribute editorial to models past, from Twiggy to Dovima, similar to the one Gisele Bundchen did for Harper's Bazaar last month. The key to Natalia's chameleon act? "I looked at each woman's lips - they're all different."
