Marc Jacobs on Happiness, His Physical Transformation, and Staying Humble

>> In a recent interview with The Talks, Marc Jacobs opens up on everything from his morning routine to how he relates to women. And, though the designer shed his indie-grunge image several years ago, there's quite a bit in the interview about why - and how - he's physically changed: "No, I didn't do it for the image." Below, more highlights from the article.

On happiness: "I don't know what the key to happiness is. Happy is just a feeling like every other feeling. I certainly feel happy some days and in general I am pretty happy, but I have all the other feelings as well."

On success and constant flattery: "Well, I just do my job. I'm not really distracted by it. Nice things are very nice to hear and it is flattering when one is given some kind of recognition, but none of that distracts me from what my job is . . . And honestly, no matter how flattering or even un-flattering something is, it doesn't prevent me from getting up and going to work and doing what I love to do."

On changing his lifestyle: "I did it for health reasons. I was really very weak. I had been working very hard and I had some stomach problems, so I saw a nutritionist and he recommended that I go to the gym and change my diet and all of that."

On how he relates to his customers: "It's funny: I enjoy clothing more, I enjoy getting my haircut, I enjoy grooming. In a way it kind of helped me to understand more of what the customer sees in terms of fashion. I got to appreciate it more from a first hand point of view. I like to shop, for example, which I never did before."

On how he relates to women: "I feel much more secure with my body and in some ways I can relate more to the joys a woman gets in terms of taking care of herself."

On his morning routine: "Now I get up early in the morning and I really enjoy getting dressed and putting lotions on my skin and getting manicures- all those things. It's a joy, it is really nice. You know, it used to take me five minutes to get in and out of the bathroom. I would get in the shower, get out of the shower and put on the same clothes every day and I didn't care."

Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2012

"It's good to have all the beauty," de Libran - who helms the house's Pre-Fall and Resort collections- said of the collection's more extravagant details, "but you have to be able to wear the clothes. After all, that's what we're all here for, no?" And so, among all the fur and sequins, de Libran offered plenty that was wearable: a streamlined shorts suit, motorcycle jackets in wool and leather, round-shouldered coats, and several sweet little frocks.

Marc Jacobs Says Not Going to Dior "Was Probably Best For Everyone"

>> Marc Jacobs has a busy year ahead of him - one that he says he's happy to experience from his current post at Louis Vuitton. In a recent interview with the Telegraph, the designer shared his thoughts on Dior, his upcoming projects, and more. The highlights, here:

On the recently announced Louis Vuitton fragrance: "Perfume is something I wanted to do here since the beginning, I don't know when it will be launched but we are in the process of working on it - there was a perfume back in the Twenties, a very niche little thing."

On the upcoming "Louis Vuitton - Marc Jacobs" exhibit, opening March 15 in Paris: "It's a really great honor. It's going to be a super animated, really great exhibition. I'm really proud of everyone here, proud for everyone here. As a New Yorker, I love Paris and I never in my wildest dreams as a teenager dreamed I would have a job working for this big luxury company. Now 15 years on, there is this thing at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs at the Louvre - it is really beyond my wildest dreams. It makes me very emotional - in a good way."

On not going to Dior: "It's a great honor to be considered, and Mr. Arnault is a super intelligent man and a very smart man and it was certainly a very great honor for him to know that I was capable - and not only capable but that I am someone that he would have wanted for the job. But I am very happy to be here. There is so much more left to do and building Louis Vuitton into a fashion company is something nobody else can say they really started."

On how the decision was made: "We agreed that it was probably best for everyone."

Raf Simons May Be Dior's New Designer

>> With Marc Jacobs out of the picture, Raf Simons - who recently came under consideration, alongside Jason Wu and Alexander Wang - has emerged as frontrunner for the Dior job.

According to WWD's sources, Dior is closing in on a contract with 43-year-old Simons, although the deal has yet to be concluded. Among the details that still need to be worked out: a start date (Simons, who has been at Jil Sander since 2005, reportedly just recently extended his contract with that house for an unknown duration) and when his first Dior collection would debut (likely not for Spring 2012 couture in January nor Fall 2012 in March).

Dior CEO Sidney Toledano is currently traveling in Asia and was not immediately reachable for comment, and Simons did not return phone calls.

Sarah Burton Takes Home the Big Prize at the 2011 British Fashion Awards

>> This evening at London's Savoy Theatre, a who's who of British fashion gathered for The British Fashion Council's annual awards. Victoria Beckham, accepting her Designer Brand of the Year award from presenter Marc Jacobs, told the crowd, "I am SO nervous," before shedding a few tears and adding: "This is rubbish." Alexa Chung, who took home the British Style award - which is decided by a public vote - dedicated her award to "girls who dress like awkward boys." Kate Hudson, presenting Red Carpet Award to Stella McCartney, regaled the audience with an anecdote about the dress McCartney designed for her to wear to her first Oscars: "I wore Stella and made every worst-dressed list. The next day, I called Stella, and she said, 'Face it babe, it was the hair.'" And finally, Sarah Burton, who took home Designer of the Year, called the award "the icing on the cake for what has been an amazing year."

Marc Jacobs's Spring 2012 Collection Stolen (Update)

>> All 46 looks from Marc Jacobs's Spring 2012 collection were stolen in transit from Paris to London for a press day. The brand's PR team wrote in an email: "Dear all, The Marc Jacobs PR team is sorry to inform you that our press day tomorrow in the Marc Jacobs store is canceled, due to the theft of the Spring/Summer 2012 collections during its transfer from Paris." UPDATE: Scotland Yard has confirmed that it is investigating the theft of $65,000 worth of "clothing, bags, and shoes." A person familiar with the situation says that the collection stolen was comprised of “duplicate samples, in Europe for press days ... The collection as shown in New York is safe, and the red carpets won’t be missing Marc Jacobs this season.” [NY Times]

Marc Jacobs is offering a reward, according to its Twitter: "See any chic truck drivers cruising around Europe dressed in #SS12 Collection? Get a pic & call 212-343-0222. Reward."

Marc Jacobs-Dior Talks Halt; Alexander Wang, Raf Simons, and Jason Wu Now Being Considered

>> Marc Jacobs, long the favorite to take over at Dior, may not be headed to the house after all. Talks between the two parties have once again halted, WWD reports, and Dior has stepped up both the pace and depth of negotiations with other designers - Alexander Wang, Raf Simons, and Jason Wu, in particular. Riccardo Tisci is also still in the mix, but given his strong momentum at Givenchy, is viewed as unlikely to be appointed.

Although last month, talks between Jacobs and Dior were said to be progressing - Bernard Arnault reportedly flew into Manhattan to meet with Jacobs - and there was no explosive breakdown, Arnault and Dior recently decided to move onto another scenario - in part because Jacobs requested that he take his Vuitton design team to Dior, which would leave Vuitton without creative support, and Phoebe Philo, the preferred candidate to take over at Vuitton, reportedly prefers to continue at Celine.

The Dior search is said to be focused on finding a designer - young or mature - with an affinity and respect for the brand's glamorous DNA, and a vision for taking it forward, post-Galliano. However, one source told WWD: “It is not impossible that [Arnault] resumes his talks with Marc.”
