>> For Fall 2012, Michael and Nicole Colovos offered up a confident collection of strong-lined separates steeped in Helmut Lang's intrinsic cool. This time around, the brand's signature pieces - draped dresses, funnel-neck sweaters, power blazers, and skinny pants - were done up in a tactile assortment of Winter-ready fabrics: pebbled leather, cobweb knits, structured wool, and high-pile fur. Also on hand was a surprising - and welcome - amount of color and pattern in the form of crimson, oxblood, and molten lava prints.

>> Helmut Lang's signature draped dresses and leather jackets are for Pre-Fall 2012 interspliced with webby prints and burnouts - derived from the web patterns of spiders on drugs. With this collection, designers Nicole and Michael Colovos are also launching a t-shirt line of their greatest hits, dubbed Helmut, which will retail from $90 to $175 and include jersey basics like tops, dresses, and leggings.

Helmut Lang Spring 2012

>> Helmut Lang hit the Fashion Week runway Saturday for the first time in over five years - and for the first time since husband-and-wife team Michael and Nicole Colovos have been at the helm. Presented in the raw-industrial vastness of Pier 57 on a towering multi-lane runway - there wasn't a bad seat in the house - models marched in tandem to thundering doom-metal guitar strains. It was a dramatic re-entrance indeed, one that was amplified by a stark palette of solid black, white, and yellow - and the architectural mega-platforms designed by Alejandro Ingelmo for the occassion. But it wasn't all about hardness and edge; there was an undulating softness at play here as well, one that was inspired by artist Richard Serra and turned up in the form of sheer fabrics, asymmetrical drapes, and a sunny brush-stroke print. “We were playing with a lot of contrasts,” explained Nicole Colovos.

Hermes Wanted Helmut Lang to Replace Jean Paul Gaultier

>> Helmut Lang seems pretty set about not coming back to fashion - he recently shredded the remains of his archives for an art exhibition - but that doesn't mean he isn't still being pursued. Apparently, after Jean Paul Gaultier decided to leave Hermes in May 2010, Lang was the firm favorite to replace Gaultier as Hermes creative director, W reports. But: When Hermes courted Lang, he refused - he wanted to continue his newfound career as an artist instead of returning to fashion - and the job instead went to Christophe Lemaire.

While Hermes womenswear contributes less than 10 percent of the brand's annual turnover, it does have a symbolic significance in the media and how the brand is viewed. And speaking of views, another Hermes family member has spoken out about Bernard Arnault and the threat of an LVMH takeover. Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the company's group artistic director, tells W: “Hermes has grown out of a family culture with a set of values that we all believe in. I am convinced it would disappear if the family dimension was taken away or diluted. You know, there have been a lot of very good, small restaurants in Paris that have been bought by big chains over the years, usually in the name of better management. But somehow their clients have stopped going, because they have lost their souls ... This whole situation has been an incentive to work even harder. I have told everybody, ‘Listen, guys - it’s time to be more Hermes than ever.’”

Helmut Lang Shredded the Remaining Pieces from His Clothing Archives for Art

>> If you weren't convinced that Helmut Lang is over fashion, here's a new batch of evidence: The former designer, who in the past has donated thousands of items from his archive to museums worldwide, shredded his 6,000 remaining archival pieces to use in a series of sculptures. The floor-to-ceiling, stalactitelike columnar forms - made of scraps of fabrics, fur, feathers, leather, plastic, hair and metal from more than 25 years of fashion collections - are set to go on display from July 22 through Aug. 8 at The Fireplace Project, a gallery in East Hampton, New York. According to Neville Wakefield, who is presenting the solo exhibition, the sculptures erase the past and highlight “the transience of our creative endeavors.” [WWD]

Helmut Lang Resort 2012

>> While other labels tend to focus their Resort collections on clothes worthy of warm weather getaways, Nicole and Michael Colovos steered their Resort 2012 Helmut Lang collection to pieces more befit for cooler weather. "Our girls don't do resort," the designers offered by way of explanation, noting that the pieces will hit stores in November.

Feather motifs and the Colovos' tendency toward black and gray permeated the collection - with some warmer rusts and mustards popping up - while the ubiquitous asymmetrical hems came by way of the Spomenik Monuments in former Yugoslavia. “They’re these huge, asymmetrical sculptures that have been sitting in the middle of nowhere,” explained Michael. “We always gravitate toward something bold.”
