Chanel Spring 2012 Couture

>> "No '50s, no '60s, no '70s; just what I like," Karl Lagerfeld said of his Spring 2012 Couture collection for Chanel. Presented in an Air Chanel jumbo jet - built in the Grand Palais specifically for the occasion and complete with Chanel logo carpet, skylights, and airplane seats - the collection was a "monochrome rainbow" of blues, blacks, and creams, in straightforward silhouettes that moved easily from day to night. Suits, dresses, and jackets were structured and clean, with dropped waists, puffed sleeves, low pockets, and wide, stand-away necklines. For evening, there were tiered gowns and organza trapeze cocktail dresses glimmering with crystals, beads, sequins, and high-shine PVC.

Chanel Pre-Fall 2012

>> Chanel's Pre-Fall 2012 Metiers d'Art runway show guests were seated at an elaborate banquet set up in the Grand Palais in Paris today, where they were served champagne, guava juice, tea, and miniature cakes and sandwiches. An antique silver train with the double-C Chanel logo ran around the central banquet table.
The Paris-Bombay-themed collection, inspired by the jewels, colors, and fabrics of India, was accented by nose rings and twisted dreadlock updos. John Lennon's "Instant Karma!" played on the soundtrack. More pictures will be added as they come in.

Francois Lesage, Famed Couture Embroiderer, Has Died

>> Francois Lesage, acknowledged widely as the greatest couture embroiderer, died today at age 82. He had been ill for a number of years but remained active in his eponymous business until recently.

Maison Lesage was founded by Lesage's father, who collaborated with early 20th-century designers like Vionnet at Elsa Schiaparelli. Lesage took over his father's firm at 20, later joking: "[I was] born on a mound of pearls and glitter. It never occurred to me to do anything else. I still sleep in the bedroom where I was born."

Under Lesage's 60-some-odd years of leadership, the house worked with a diverse group of clients, including Dior, Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Christian Lacroix. The company has been owned by Chanel since 2002. "Our role is to be chameleons," Lesage explained in recent years. "With Karl [Lagerfeld], I am Karl. With Christian, I am Christian . . . We receive a sketch and it is up to us to interpret. The couturier is the architect, we are the decorators."

Maison Lesage will continue under newly appointed artistic director Hubert Barrère. But, as Karl Lagerfeld said at the time of Chanel's purchase of the house in 2002: "There is no couture without embroidery and no embroidery without Lesage."

Many were thus dressed in Chanel - Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Wintour, Elizabeth Olsen, Chloe Moretz - save a few: Lara Stone came in Calvin Klein, Joan Smalls in Tom Ford, Miranda Kerr in Peter Pilotto, and Karen Elson in Roberto Cavalli.

Preview Karl Lagerfeld and Carine Roitfeld's Upcoming Collaborative Book

>> Carine Roitfeld has dropped hints about working with Karl Lagerfeld on an upcoming book, and now there's photographic proof. A preview - and details about the collaboration - are in the new issue of V magazine, on newsstands tomorrow, Nov. 9.

The project, which is still being produced, centers around the classic black Chanel tweed jacket. Lagerfeld has been shooting (and Roitfeld styling) portraits of stylish women (and a couple of men) of varying ages and occupations - think actors, models, and heiresses - wearing the jacket, in order to explore the many different ways it can be worn. "This jacket is a vital and irrational impulse open to creativity and transformation," Lagerfeld explains, adding: "Especially in the hands of Carine Roitfeld."
