>> Woody Allen’s Manhattan and Diane Keaton in the '70s were Scott Sternberg's starting points for Boy. by Band of Outsiders Pre-Fall 2012. "I was re-watching Manhattan for, like, the 15th time, and that way of dressing that you see in Diane Keaton's character - corduroy suits, button-ups, a certain type of plaid, a high neck-just seemed really fresh, or close to it," Sternberg explained. "Certainly in need of an update, but the nice start of an idea about dressing for the fall." A ladybug print borrowed from a '40s archival piece was placed on a boiler suit, and the plaid dress at left was given a raw-edged hem.

Scott Sternberg Puts on First Runway Show, Complete With Rappelling Models, for Band of Outsiders’ Fall 2011 Collection

>> Scott Sternberg has a love of elaborate sets and cookies, and his first ever Boy/Band of Outsiders runway show involved both. Meyer lemon cookies were on every seat, thanks to David Chang's Momofuku Milk Bar (the chef was also in attendance, along with Kirsten Dunst - the brand’s latest lookbook model - Bee Shaffer, Kanye West, and Aziz Ansari, who wears the brand on his comedy tours); even Anna Wintour was spotted taking a bite. And then male models started rappelling 30 feet down from the top of the ceiling.

Thick knit sweaters, cropped plaid pants, fur scarves, silk print gowns, and slouchy fur beanies all pointed toward a grungy glamorous ski-inspired feel, while sharper looks, like a thin-wale corduroy suit, injected just the right amount of polish. A striped wool blanket poncho emoted the perfect sense of Winter cozy and semi-sheer maxi dresses were adorned with diminutive floral prints. Stylist Tina Chai topped off the look with chunky heeled hiking boots, pearls from Mikimoto, and pendants from Aesa.

Scott Sternberg Has a Lower-Priced Women's Line in the Works

>> Seven years since quitting his job as a Hollywood agent at CAA to launch Band of Outsiders, Scott Sternberg is ready to transform his $12 million business into a $40 million one in the next three years.

To do that, he's in the midst of expanding Boy., his menswear-inspired women's collection launched in 2007, and he has a second women's collection, girl., a less expensive, more feminine line, in the works. He's also increasing the number of women's collections produced from two to four per year.

>> Scott Sternberg definitely has a thing for Polaroid - every season, he has a different actress (Michelle Williams, Marisa Tomei) don his clothes and tell a story through a series of faded photos. Even his show invite this season depicts all of the necessary who, where, when information via a Polaroid picture.

For his Spring 2010 lookbook, he tells Style.com, “I thought it would be kind of hilarious to pair a cougar with two younger dudes and see what kind of story would come out of it.” Thus, you have Leslie Mann gallivanting on a boat in Marina del Rey, California with Dave Franco (James's little brother) and Community's Donald Glover.

>> Never lacking a sense of humor, Scott Sternberg listed among "the people that put the show together" like his stylist Tina Chai and Philip Crangi, who contributed Giles & Brother jewelry, "Snuffaluffagus" and "Cookie Monster" in his Spring 2010 Boy/Band of Outsiders show notes. But jokes aside, the beachy presentation - which included hammocks, sand dunes, beach grass, and miniature boats floating in a pool of water - set off a new round of his blazers, button-downs, trenches, and bandage suspender skirts, with a little floral print thrown in for good measure.

Double (or Triple) Duty Presentations

Gareth Pugh confirmed that he will be showing a video directed by Ruth Hogben on Sept. 13 to "set the mood for [his] catwalk show that will take place as usual in Paris." After the private showing, he'll screen the short film in public nearby - get your name on the guest list via MAC's Facebook page. [Style File]
Temperley London is taking their interactive Spring 2010 multimedia presentation on the road for the second time, starting in New York Sept. 15 before evolving in format for London Fashion Week and then again in Paris, where it will become an exhibit. The film aspect, plus stills and a behind-the-scenes cut will be readily available online on Temperley's new website.

Michelle Williams is a Boy's Girl for Band of Outsiders

>> Michelle Williams is used to others snooping around in her business, but for Scott Sternberg's Fall 2008 Boy by Band of Outsiders look book, she got to play a snoop in interior designer Paul Fortune's house.

Sternberg took all the pictures himself with a seventies-era Polaroid camera, set on capturing Michelle informally: "There [wasn't] hair and makeup . . . no lights or anything." His regular stylist Tina Chai was present, to ensure the look book had the un-stylized look he was going for.

The laid-back theme is being carried over into Band of Outsiders's Spring 2009 presentation, which will involve a film featuring two or three of Sternberg's celebrity friends instead of a catwalk. As for the reasoning? The designer told WWD: "I don’t make runway clothes. These are clothes you wear on the street, so I’m just super-uncomfortable with it. It puts it in totally the wrong context - I want to do something closer to where the clothes are, and let people actually touch and feel them as opposed to seeing them on a 14-year-old anorexic model."

Boy and Band of Outsiders Fall 2009 Full of Insiders

>> After two seasons of videos, Scott Sternberg decided to take his Boy and Band of Outsiders show live, creating tableaux vivants of models in classroom, by a lamppost, resting on a park bench, or reading a book on a bed - "I want to use the groupings, or vignettes, to create microcosms within this vast space." Props to the man for being one of the first, if not the first this week to rent a space big enough to hold his presentation and all the guests invited comfortably. Kanye West hit up this show too, and Jason Wu, who shares the same stylist with Sternberg, Tina Chai.

The sportwear label clearly has some major fans - Meredith Melling Burke was running around, camera out - which I've never seen her do - and got up close and personal with the brightly-colored, ankle-tied high heel bowling shoes that Boy collaborated with Manolo Blahnik on; they did look outstanding against the contrasting tights with color-tipped toes.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Still Necessary, Just with Less of Everything

>> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether - the attention is too valuable. "You kill a thousand birds with one stone, because you get that many people there in an hour and you're getting one message across to them," says Scott Sternberg of Boy and Band of Outsiders. "They're writers and photographers and culturally indulgent people with loud mouths."

Instead, designers are saving by hosting presentations instead of runway shows (Monique Lhuillier, Temperley London, and Carmen Marc Valvo), inviting fewer guests (Marc Jacobs and DKNY, who's slicing her usual 1,000 down to 400), sending email invites instead of by mail (nearly everyone), or showing fewer looks to save on fabric and sample-making costs.
