Jessica Stam, Lily Donaldson Help AmfAR Launch the Fashion Week Storm

>> Last night, editors and models alike gathered at Cipriani to simultaneously launch Fashion Week - officially - and benefit one of fashion's favorite causes: AIDS research foundation amfAR. Anna Wintour presented and Donna Karan received an award for her contribution to amfAR's mission; Lara Stone, Caroline Winberg, Jessica Stam, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Lily Donaldson, and Anja Rubik (with boyfriend Sasha Knezevic) all got gussied up and came along for the ride. Afterward, there was a mass migration to Rose Bar, where they were joined by Vladimir Restoin Roitfeld and Giovanna Battaglia for a little enjoyment of the calm before the storm.

>> Last night's amfAR gala to kick off Fall 2012 Fashion Week had it all. There were superstars (Julianne Moore, Sarah Jessica Parker), icons (Carine Roitfeld, Roberto Cavalli), and way too many supermodels to count - Heidi Klum, Cindy Crawford, Molly Sims, Erin Heatherton, and Anja Rubik, just to name a few. Cavalli, who was honored at the event, offered insight into his newfound passion: social media. "I discovered I love to write. It's a new emotion," the designer explained. >> Couture and Roitfelds galore populated last night's amfAR's Cinema Against AIDS Gala, held as part of the Cannes festivities at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d’Antibes. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld and their significant others (Robert Konjic and Giovanna Battaglia, respectively) were hosted by Peter Dundas at the Emilio Pucci table, while Carine Roitfeld - and Naomi Campbell, Dasha Zhukova, Kristen McMenamy, and Courtney Love - came decked out in Givenchy. Chanel, too, dressed a host of ladies for the event - including Charlotte Casiraghi, Kirsten Dunst, and Karolina Kurkova - which set a new record, raising more than $10 million for AIDS research (the cost per plate was reportedly $10,000, after all).

>> This evening's amfAR Cinema Against AIDS gala in Cannes promised the appearances of chairs Donatella Versace and Carine Roitfeld, and it more than delivered. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, who are hosting their annual blowout tomorrow night, have officially docked their "mirrored floating disco" yacht, according to T's Stefano Tonchi, and joined in on the fun. Natasha Poly, who needed the help of two women to get into her Cavalli gown yesterday, reappeared in a leopard dress. Claudia Schiffer made her first red carpet appearance of the festival. And Carine Roitfeld made the rounds, stopping to chat with Twilight's Robert Pattinson.

She's definitely not out of fashion for good - last night she told The Cut, "I have a new project" which is "in fashion, of course." Anna Wintour Doesn't Think You Should Be Wearing $25,000 Sequined Crop Tops Right Now

>> Although she rarely gives interviews - except for, you know, the lengthy one in The September Issue and that profile she's supposedly doing for 60 Minutes (rumor is their cameras were following her again at the amfAR Gala Thursday night), so maybe she's changed her mind - Anna Wintour sat down with Rachel Dodes of The Wall Street Journal right before New York Fashion Week for a quick fashion state-of-the-union-interview.

But before we get started, a sidenote - the coat she wore Thursday (left) looks to be from Peter Som's Fall 2009 capsule collection, so methinks he will be taken care of just fine. Now, among the interview's highlights:

Now is not the time to look "too Dubai."

I don't think anyone is going to want to look overly flashy, overly glitzy, too Dubai, whatever you want to call it. I just don't think that's the moment. But I do feel an emphasis on quality and longevity and things that really last.

She won't name names, but some designers aren't making clothes that are worth the price tag.

In the [Vogue] Index pages we are looking more rigorously at price and value and asking, 'is something worth that particular price tag?'

A thing that wasn't worth it? Without naming names, we had a little sequined thing that wouldn't come down to here on you [points to chest.] And I said, 'How much is it?' $25,000. I said, 'No. We're not going to photograph that right now.'

>> Since Carine Roitfeld was one of the co-chairs for the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala, it's no surprise the models showed up in droves: Lily Donaldson (in Balmain), Natalia Vodianova (in Valentino), Milla Jovovich (in Louis Vuitton), Eva Herzigova (in Dolce & Gabbana), and Natasha Poly (in Roberto Cavalli) were all in attendance. Although this isn't the first Cannes-related event for most of these ladies, notice how most of them rank high on Carine's favorites list, especially Lily and Natasha. Also, wow Lily, legs for days!
