The designer has been spending a lot of time developing Z Spoke into a cohesive wardrobe - speaking with customers at the Z Spoke store, expanding the selection of outerwear - and it shows. Now there are boxy cropped jackets, pleated two-tiered frocks, and easy-wearing coats sitting effortlessly amongst the body-con dresses, nipped-in blazers, and ankle-grazing gowns. Zac Posen, Nanette Lepore the Latest to Ink Mass Market Deals

>> The collaborations just keep coming: Zac Posen and Nanette Lepore are the latest designers to announce mass market deals. In April, Posen's capsule collection of 12 dresses - ranging in price from $149 to $199 - will hit 30 Lord & Taylor stores. And in early 2013, Lepore will launch a line for juniors with "sophisticated tastes" at over 600 J.C. Penney locations. Entitled L'amour, Lepore's line will feature dresses, prom looks, silk-screened t-shirts, sportswear, and denim. "This will not be a capsule collection," J.C. Penney president Michael Francis told WWD. "This is a meaningful, multi-year relationship." Francis also noted that this isn't the only collaboration the retailer has in the works, adding, "This is the first of our new designer partnerships. We will bring in the right designers."

>> Zac Posen riffed on the idea of wardrobe essentials - with a twist - for his Spring 2012 Z Spoke collection. "There's no need for more essentials that are basic," he explains. "These have a bit of fashion to them." To that end, Posen's essentials are dressed-up, playful, and full of the designer's signature feminine detailing: lean-cut trousers come in shiny two-tone faille or tie-dyed lace, shirt dresses in whisper-weight seersucker, and skirts in swinging full flares. There's plenty of wearable whimsy too - a swinging "disco tent dress" in shimmering sequins, a floaty ruched-chiffon neon shift - and lots of lively prints, like an "acid" cheetah in chartreuse and lemon, ditsy florals in abstracted batiks. "This is a wardrobe, and it's nice to be able to mix it up and show the diversity of it," Posen says. The collection's diversity carries through to accessories as well, with luxe Nappa leather totes and embossed-croc satchels mingling easily with brightly-colored iPad cases and studded clutches - which run from $225 to $695. Critics' Sharp Tongues - Cathy Horyn on Nicolas Ghesquiere; Robin Givhan on Zac Posen

>> 'Tis the season for fashion critics to sharpen their pencils - and, so it seems, do the same with their words. Both Cathy Horyn and Robin Givhan have some choice thoughts on Nicolas Ghesquiere and Zac Posen, respectively.

Horyn writes in the New York Times: "The fact is, some forms just become worn out ... though he is not a showman, there is a growing impatience with Nicolas Ghesquiere. His experimental treatment of materials at Balenciaga has been exciting to behold, and necessary, but more and more the effect is like jumping on a spring-shot mattress. What happened to the cool street chic of Mr. Ghesquiere of a decade ago, when you actually saw women wearing his clothes? People who followed his career from the start probably appreciate his technical leaps and are willing to indulge him for the sake of creative freedom and the sheer hope of being knocked off their chairs ... But I suspect that our extremely materialistic culture, with the grab-and-go mentality fostered by the Web, just makes new fans itch for something to wear."

And Robin Givhan tells Page Six Magazine of Zac Posen: “Zac reminds me of another era in fashion. He’s a maestro. It reminds me of a time when there was an embrace of fashion as this fun, entertaining industry. He’s got a lot more competition now. [Early on in his career] he was one of only a few young guns. But people like Jason Wu have cut into a lot of the razzle-dazzle that he once owned. When you burn that white hot, eventually you burn out. That overwhelming hotness has cooled off.”

>> Easy-to-wear separates in an easy-on-the-eyes palette permeate the Z Spoke Resort 2012 offering. The inky palette and subdued mood that were the hallmark of the Fall 2011 Z Spoke collection have lightened up a bit, giving way to a selection of pieces that hit a slightly more playful note: a cherry red silk anorak with a drawstring peplum-waist; a pale blue wide-leg pantsuit in slubby tweed; and plenty of sweet fit-n-flare frocks in all kinds of chiffon and polka dots. It's a youthful outing for Posen, and one that's perfectly reflected in his choice of lookbook model - Lindsey Wixson.

Zac Posen Resort 2012

>> The idea behind Zac Posen's Resort 2012 collection? American Royalty. "It's about how to be dressed up and poised, but still cool; Patti Smith in a gown and Penelope Tree in a trench," says Posen. The way Posen plays with silhouettes is a study in contrasts: a soft, buttercup-printed chiffon dress is gathered into bodice-hugging seams, only to be let loose in a flurry of ruffles at the hip; a peplum waistcoat with a second-skin fit gets a hit of volume at the sleeves with tiers of unfinished chiffon ribbons. But this is still classic Zac - with lots of show-stopping gowns on offer. The stand-out number? A 720-yard, hand-dyed vermillion confection with a swirling, mermaid train.

Click through to see the lookbook featuring Coco Rocha, who - according to Posen reps - did the whole 33-look shoot in under two-hours, finishing each shot in the length of time it took for a new song to play on the stereo.

Peep Zac Posen's Streamlined Z Spoke Fall 2011 Lookbook

>> "I think in general with collection and with Z Spoke, we're moving into a more streamlined identity of my original language," said Zac Posen, when describing his new outlook on designing. And while we'll have to wait to see exactly how that translates for Posen's signature collection at Paris Fashion Week, the lower-priced Z Spoke Fall 2011 collection lookbook - featuring "Zac-ettes" Tao Okamoto, Anna Cleveland, Crystal Renn, Sessilee Lopez, and Coco Rocha - is a definite departure from the wild "fashion-tainment" Z Spoke collection that debuted last September. Think edgy, yet wearable pieces like tailored ponchos, wide-leg trousers, and a heavy helping of dresses.
