Fash's Friday Obsessions! Stepping Into Spring

>> There's no doubt we're in a Spring state of mind as of late thanks to all of the new Spring collections in stores and online. This week, we're stepping into the new season in colorblocked Pierre Hardy wedges, awesome wrapped bracelets from the socially conscious Bluma Project, ASOS tangerine satchel, and textural print dress from Edun. Meanwhile, a melon-hued VPL bra provides the perfect peek-a-boo effect against a tan complexion, thanks to Too Faced's bronze face primer.

Victoria Bartlett Creates Latex Trench Coats and Skin Suits For VPL’s Fall 2011 Collection

>> Victoria Bartlett found inspiration inside the body, deep down to the umbilical cords, for her VPL Fall 2011 collection, which ebbed and flowed between draped silhouettes and more sculptural pieces. Inspired by artists Piero Manzoni and Joseph Beuys for their multi-textural sculptures, Bartlett created languid one-shoulder jersey dresses, leather tops, latex trench coats, textured jackets, angular boiled wool skirts, along with nylon accordion-pleated pieces inspired by Dustin Yellin to replicate her idea of hard and soft, or what she calls “stretch and fold.” The designer also experimented with warmer hues like deer, wood, iron oxide, gold, and orange, counteracted with cooler options such as aluminum and steel. Bartlett’s undergarments, some almost completely see-through, were another success garnering major applause from onlookers in the stands.

On the accessories front, Bartlett once again collaborated with LD Tuttle for footwear, this time creating a range of tucked and folded platform boots. Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer designed the chain and latex belts and wrapped necklaces to mimic umbilical cords, and Brian Crumley created the chunky latex cuffs.

VPL by Victoria Bartlett Pre-Fall 2010

Victoria Bartlett showed plenty of her signature knits and lingerie for her VPL pre-fall collection, using metallic thread to create the look of chain mail in draped tops and sweaters. Legwear stood out-in sheer gray or black-as did dolman-sleeved sweaters and harem-style trousers with ties at the waist. Check out some of our favorite looks in the gallery below.

Runway Report: VPL Spring 2010

Victoria Bartlett showed her spring 2010 collection for VPL at Pier 59 studios today. Titled "Atlas of Anatomy", Bartlett presented a series of deconstructed and reconstructed looks in shades of navy, black, cream, orange and beige with a little help from her accessory designing friends - Aran Baik knits, Lizzie Fortunato and Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer jewelry, and LD Tuttle footwear.

Always interested in manipulating shapes to create a complex silhouette, Bartlett shined in transparent leggings, an alabaster tunic with twisted cord knots, and the 16-look finale section of sheer nudes paired with shoulder pads or layered over sequined undergarments.

Also of note, a navy parachute fabric used for bloomers and jumpers, a coral shift dress with matching leggings, and the organically shaped Lizzie Fortunato for VPL necklaces in bone, rope, wood, and resin.

Bartlett used accessories to further her anatomical statement, and the aforementioned knits played a major role in pushing the theme. There were 'vertebrae knits' and 'sternum knits' - beautiful bits of yarn twisted together over the shoulder or neck, referencing the obvious skeletal structure.

London, New York Designers Take Show to Paris in Hope of More Sales

>> Budget cuts brought fewer European retailers to New York Fashion Week and fewer US retailers to London Fashion Week - Julie Gilhart of Barneys, for one - so instead, designers are meeting them at the one Fashion Week they all can't miss: Paris.

Those from New York heading across the seas to meet with potential buyers and hopefully secure sales are Brian Reyes, Alexander Wang, and Victoria Bartlett of VPL, who are all sharing a space, plus Elise Overland, Jason Wu, Erin Fetherston, and Justin Giunta of Subversive Jewelry. Diane von Furstenberg and Philip Crangi have already been spotted together at Tuileries, but The Ritz Paris is said to be the unofficial headquarters of retailer-designer-meet-and-greet activity.

The British Fashion Council is also investing itself in a trip to Paris - starting Friday, designers such as House of Holland, Osman Yousefzada, Felder Felder and Louise Gray will reside at the JTM Gallery on Rue de Richelieu, where international fashion press and buyers will have a second chance to peruse the collections; the hope, of course, is to increase investment in London designers.

Phillip Lim's Model as Muse; Daul Kim's Thoughts on Madonna

Tao Okamoto just met Phillip Lim two weeks ago and thought he was joking when he told her it would be "so great if all the girls at the show had your hairstyle" - he wasn't, and now she's his muse [Elle News Blog]
Backstage at VPL, Daul Kim was given a "face spa air treatment scrub session"; they told her Madonna does the treatment, and her response was: "OK, but I don't want to look like Madge!" [Papermag]
Coco Rocha has some dedicated man fans - one creepy man was searching the tents high and low for her, and a photographer at Zac Posen yelled "Now that's a woman" as Coco took her turn [Fashionista, WWD Twitter]

Fall 2009: Not Just for 15-Year-Old Models

>> New York Fashion Week is known as the springboard for new faces every season, but for Fall 2009, it's become the springboard for comebacks - especially with models right around the 30-year-old mark. This morning, Frankie Rayder (34), who hasn't hit a catwalk since the Fall 2004 with the exception of Spring 2009 Givenchy, walked Michael Kors. The runways of Preen, Rodarte, Alexander Wang, and Marc Jacobs have been especially overrun with these mainly late-'90s, early-00's faces - from those who have hovered in and out the past few seasons: Anne Catherine Lacroix (29), Natasa Vojnovic (29), Caroline Ribeiro (29), Jamie Bochert (28), Christina Kruse (34), Carmen Kass (30), Colette Pechekhonova (28), Hannelore Knuts (31); to those who have exited the runway for a while - Tasha Tilberg (29), Kirsten Owen (38), Trish Goff (32) - all are booking some of the most coveted spots this season. Kors, Behnaz Sarafpour, Staerk, VPL, and Diane von Furstenberg are feeling it too - the mature woman is back in New York.

Lizzie Fortunato Jewels for VPL Fall 2009

>> Victoria Bartlett, who has dubbed the Fall 2009 collection for her sportswear-cum-undergarment line VPL "Exquisite Corpse," is keeping a collaboration from last season very much alive. Joining the ever-growing list of jewelry partnerships this season, Bartlett tapped arts-and-crafts-style specialist Lizzie Fortunato Jewels for a second round, resulting in an assortment of blocky, geometric pieces, banded bangles, and fabric ornaments to go with her "shifted Picasso women" theme.
