Anna Wintour Recommends Getting Fired, Says She Turned Down British Vogue Because "London Felt Smalltime"

>> Over the weekend, Teen Vogue held its annual Fashion University in New York for budding fashion industry followers, and Anna Wintour gave a seminar in which she was surprisingly frank. A few highlights, relayed from the Twitterverse:

When previewing the cover of the "Vogue's Best Dressed" bookazine, which is out in November and features Blake Lively in a gold dress, she shed some light on why Vogue cover subjects tend to repeat: "We pick girls we can go back to. It was hard to ignore Blake when she came on the scene . . . I told Tonne [Goodman, Vogue fashion director] to 'Vogue her.' We did her hair, gave her glamorous clothes . . ."

On the controversial Lebron James and Gisele Bundchen April 2008 Vogue cover: "It got me in a lot of trouble. Uh, that was an interesting experience."

On working with Andre Leon Talley: "[He] used to write me color-coded letters. If they were blue, he was depressed. If they were gold, I was golden"

On casting models: "Gisele Bundchen, along with Kate Moss, is a phenomenon. I wish models knew they have to have a personality."

On turning down jobs: "I was offered the editorship at British Vogue. But London felt small-time."

And, on losing jobs: "I worked for American Harper's Bazaar . . . they fired me. I recommend that you all get fired, it's a great learning experience."

2010 CFDA Award Nominees Announced

>> At the CFDA meeting earlier today, the board voted overwhelmingly to re-elect Diane von Furstenberg for a third, two-year term as president of the organization. Von Furstenberg, whose term would have originally come to an end after this year, will now serve until Dec. 31, 2012: “[The board] unanimously asked me to stay another two years and I said yes. I am happy that they love me and I love them. There is so much more to do and we’re doing it.”

And this evening, von Furstenberg held a cocktail gathering for the 2010 CFDA Award nominations announcements at her studio. She noted that the awards ceremony on June 7 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall will host a special tribute for Alexander McQueen, and the Popular Vote category, which is open to public voting and which Ralph Lauren won last year, will be back again this year, with voting starting April 1.

>> Anna Wintour to "Ad-Lib" Letterman Interview; Two New September Issue Clips -Anna Wintour's appearance on Letterman next Monday to promote The September Issue - which a spokesperson says she's not preparing for, but is rather "going to ad-lib" - nears, but tonight, she's hosting the film's New York premiere. In honor, two more clips from the film have been released; the first, a scene from the cover shoot with Sienna Miller, who starts out wearing a wig after both Anna and fashion director Tonne Goodman criticize the state of her hair, and the second, in which creative director Grace Coddington talks about how she's old-fashioned because she still touches her models to style them rather than having her assistant do it. >> INSIDER WIRE -We know Vogue's May 2009 cover will center around models, but what about further down the line? Fashion director Tonne Goodman and Annie Leibovitz were spotted in Malibu yesterday, doing a photoshoot with the girls of Nine (minus a couple): Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson, and Penelope Cruz. The movie cast was a Vogue cover waiting to happen, although it seems early to be shooting a cover, since the movie doesn't come out until Nov. 25, so logically it would be a November 2009 cover. Maybe the photos are just going inside, but a quad cover like that seems too much like something Anna Wintour couldn't pass up. [PopSugar]

Tanya Dziahileva Takes on Tonne Goodman for Vogue August 2008

>> In the second installment of Vogue editors styling models as themselves for the August 2008 issue, may I introduce Tanya Dziahileva as fashion director Tonne Goodman. The stick-straight blonde hair, solid-colored clothes, and sunglasses are all spot on.

Karen Elson as creative director Grace Coddington still takes the cake, though; Filling out the rest of the editorial are Sasha Pivovarova as Elissa Santisi, Raquel Zimmermann as Marie Amelie Sauve, and Maryna Linchuk as Tabitha Simmons, none of which are as well-done.

Blake Lively Walked Away from the Christian Louboutin Sample Sale with Over 40 Pairs of Shoes

>> Blake Lively has a fan in Anna Wintour, who has put her on three covers now - including, most recently, the special edition Vogue Best Dressed issue - after initially directing Tonne Goodman to "Vogue her," but Lively still says that she works without a stylist. Her appearance at Christian Louboutin's invite-only sample sale in New York last week could support that - Lively apparently spent over four hours looking at the stock and then trying on pumps and studded red patent boots while surrounded by towers of shoe boxes. She ended up leaving with more than 40 pairs of shoes after the whole ordeal. "I have sisters, so I'm getting gifts for them and for friends," she explained. "Of course, I got quite a few for myself, too." [Footwear News]

>> Sally Singer's First T Issue to Hit in December -Sally Singer is rounding out her fashion department with a number of former Vogue staffers, who also happen to have famous last names, in true Vogue tradition: Sara Moonves, daughter of CBS chief executive Les Moonves and former assistant to Vogue executive fashion editor Phyllis Posnick, and Vanessa Traina, daughter of Danielle Steel who has assisted Vogue contributing editor Marie Amelie Sauve, have both been hired as freelance fashion editors. Ethel Park, associate fashion editor at Vogue and longtime assistant to Tonne Goodman, is joining T as senior fashion editor on Aug. 30. “They see the link between fashion and the larger question of what’s relevant in our culture,” Singer said of her recruits. “They’re also quite connected with the generation of emerging designers, not only in the States, but abroad, as well.” Singer added that her first issue of T will be the Holiday issue, out Dec. 5. Grace Coddington, September Issue Director Collaborating on Another Film?

>> Grace Coddington has been spotted dining often with The September Issue director RJ Cutler, and it sounds like it's not just purely out of friendship. When Coddington was in London last week for the British Fashion Awards, she told the Times UK Cutler is working her illustrated book Catwalk Cats into a film treatment: “It’s a bit of a battle, actually. I’m fighting for it not to turn into some Disney thing.”

Despite all the newfound attention The September Issue has brought her - at least five people come up to her on the subway every morning - she's not planning on becoming a press hound:

Do you ever see me giving interviews? I’m never one of those people talking into a microphone at the end of a show. I’m not prepared to crush some poor designer who’s just spent six months slaving over a collection. I think it’s horrible and they all [the pundits] talk about themselves. Plus, the questions are so stupid . . . I hate trends. And you know the question they always ask me at shows; ‘What’s the latest trend?’”
