Chanel Iman Helps Tyra Banks Carry on the Vogue Italia Legacy

>> Good news: that July 2008 Vogue Italia? It's still resounding — and not just on the covers of other magazines. Today, one of the Vogue Italia stars, Tyra Banks, taped an episode of The Tyra Banks Show on West 26th Street in New York celebrating black models of the past and present in honor of the Vogue Italia "Black Issue." Joining her and voicing first-hand accounts of their industry experience were Chanel Iman, Beverly Johnson, Noemie Lenoir, and Pat Cleveland. I'm not usually a big fan of the show, but this episode — which airs Sept. 11 — I will have to watch.

Lara Stone Is an America's Next Top Model Fan

>> Lara Stone had more free time than usual this show season - she walked exclusively for Calvin Klein - and she tells British Vogue in the magazine's November 2010 cover story that she's not interested in raising her profile. "I don't think people on the street recognize me ever. And I like that. If I wanted to be recognized every five minutes, I'd hire a publicist." In fact, the British press has kept a reasonable distance from Stone and her new husband David Walliams lately - "We've got a court order," she explains.

Stone says she's happiest "vegging out in front of America's Next Top Model." When asked if the show has taught her any modelling tips, she deadpans: "Smizeing," referring to Tyra Banks's abbreviation for "smiling with your eyes." "I'm good at that," she adds.

She's been alcohol-free for a year and a half now, and as for smoking: "I'm planning to quit tomorrow, I've had enough!" She plans to kick it "through willpower. It's a bit worrying though - if you don't drink and smoke any more, there's nothing . . . " And now that she's married, are children in the future? "Not yet. But I would love to have children some day. I'd like little gay boys. That would be good. I'm terrified of having a little girl. Girls are more evil than boys. And then they have boyfriends." She corrects herself: "Of course, I'd be happy to have a girl."

>> Tyra Banks first approached Andre Leon Talley to be on America's Next Top Model eight years ago. “At that point," he told WWD, "I said no because it was the beginning. I was thinking I wanted to see where it goes.” Fast forward to 2010 and cycle 14 of the show, which premieres March 10 on The CW, with Talley on the judging panel:

I felt maybe I could contribute something to it that had not been on the show. I just felt that it was a way to step out of the box and associate myself with a very important American success story, a very important brand - Tyra Banks.

Sheer Gowns and Masks Aplenty at Vogue Paris's 90th Anniversary Ball

>> Carine Roitfeld's masquerade ball last night, celebrating 90 years of Vogue Paris and loosely Eyes Wide Shut-themed, meant lots of sheer gowns, and lots of show attendees preoccupied with finding a mask yesterday. Anna Dello Russo, inspired by Lady Gaga, paired a Gareth Pugh headpiece with her custom Emilio Pucci gown. Jean Paul Gaultier designed a metal mask for himself adorned with long feathers: "Yes, they're giant eyelashes, acting like hair -- since I'm missing some as you can see - so instead I've gone for this black plume."

Tyra Banks made do with cut up fishnets, Sasha Pivovarova got her mask "from a sex shop," and Lily Donaldson wore a red tulle veil to match her Christian Dior gown: “I made it myself. I went all the way up to the fabric district in Montmartre today.” Stephen Jones made Karlie Kloss's star spangled mask to go with her Christian Dior gown, and Riccardo Tisci did Mariacarla Boscono's over the top feathered hat, while he looked to Philip Treacy to custom make his mask.

While there was plenty of mask ogling, Carine Roitfeld was more preoccupied with other thoughts. “Oh my goodness, even the models are eating, it’s amazing!” she laughed, as Lily Donaldson took a leaf from a chocolate cabbage.

>> Andre Leon Talley made his judging debut last night on America's Next Top Model in a purple cape - no doubt custom-made by Ralph Rucci - and paraded out words like "dreckitude" and "etonne" - both of which he had to explain to Tyra Banks - in the process. Both Gawker and The Cut hailed his appearance as "the best part of the show," particularly when he brought down judgments on the model contestants' photographs like: “This would definitely hit the reject floor at Vogue. Slap! Next!” He Tweeted last night of his appearance: "I must say, I was wild about the debut. Simply wild."

>> Andre Leon Talley's New TV Role Not Wintour-Approved? -Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Andre Leon Talley would be filling a full-time judge role for the fourteenth cycle of America's Next Top Model. However, word is that Anna Wintour is less than pleased with his new direction: she apparently hasn't approved the new post, even with "numerous pleas" from show creator Tyra Banks. A Peek Backstage at the 2009 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show

>> The likes of Chanel Iman and Dorothea Barth Jorgensen are already getting primped and prepped for the two tapings of the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show this afternoon - final cut airs Dec. 1 on CBS - but it seems like mood is light. When Caroline Trentini was asked for a photo backstage, she joked, "Sure! Want me to jump?"

Chanel Iman, meanwhile, prepared for her first Victoria's Secret catwalk by chatting with mentor Tyra Banks and doing a little research. “This might sound corny, but I went on YouTube and I did my homework by going and seeing the different years that Victoria’s Secret has had, the different shows and who did Victoria’s Secret, and studied their walks so that I can turn mine different from everyone else’s!”

>> The Nina Garcia-Elle saga ensues: New revelations have surfaced that even if Nina decides to accept the contributing editor role she's been offered , it will only be for six months, tops, and then she'll be entirely out of a job.

But the Elle mess just gets messier. The Tyra Banks-produced reality show, "Fashionista," which follows young contestants as they compete for an assistant position to Elle creative director Joe Zee, is grating on the nerves of staffers:

"It's a nightmare," one insider complained. "And his real assistant hates it. No one believes they're actually going to hire the person who wins the reality show."

I hope, for Elle's sake, that all of this is worth it - foraging into reality TV with Tyra, no less, and airing all the Nina laundry out in the open. It will be interesting to see if their tactic of trading discretion for publicity fares well for the magazine, or just ends up backfiring. Fashion is all about image, after all.

Each episode, the competitors have one assistant task and a fashion editorial assignment, and each week, in consultation with Joe Zee, Anne fires one person. The final standing assistant standing wins a paid editorial position at Elle, a paid lease on an apartment in Manhattan, and a clothing allowance at H&M, all for one year, valued at $100,000.

>> The first two promotional photos for Stylista (which has been renamed again from Fashionista), the Tyra Banks-produced reality show in which 11 contestants compete for a job at Elle, have appeared, and they definitely look pretty Tyra-fying.
