RJ Cutler Working on Another Fashion Film, Victoria Beckham's New Hair

R.J. Cutler, the documentarian who directed The September Issue, is working on a fashion film based on Fabulous Nobodies, the chronicle of an '80s Manhattan nightclub hostess written by former Vogue Australia Editor-in-Chief Lee Tulloch. The screenplay is ready, and Cutler's goal is to start filming by this Fall - now all he needs is a "stylish twentysomething actress for the lead role" and he'll be set. [The Cut]
Fashion designer Victoria Beckham debuted a new haircut this week, chopping off her long locks in favor of a just-below-the-shoulder-length cut. Beckham tweeted a picture of her freshly shorn hair on the floor of her salon this weekend with the message "Chopped it off!" and paparazzi captured her summery new 'do shortly thereafter. Filming has begun on the new Sex and the City prequel show The Carrie Diaries, and AnnaSophia Robb - the actress playing young Carrie Bradshaw - has been spotted toting around a paint-splattered handbag emblazoned with her character's name. Anna Wintour Taught Stylist Edward Enninful That Fashion Can Be Fun

Yes, we are huge fans of Edward Enninful's work with photographers like Steven Meisel and Craig McDean, but our favorite Enninful moment is a short scene during The September Issue when the superstar stylist claims (giant Jamba Juice in hand) he wants to kill himself after an upsetting meeting with Anna Wintour. Wintour had just responded to his latest work for the magazine by asking, "Where is the glamour? I mean, please, it's Vogue."

Despite (or because of) her sharp critiques, Enninful credits Wintour with introducing him to a lighter side of fashion. In a recent interview with One Management's Christopher Michael for Models.com, he says: "With Anna, I learned that fashion can be fun and it didn’t have to be dark, fashion could be all these things and still have an edge, and still be a business.”

The model-obsessed stylist, who has been working in the industry since his days at i-D in the late 1980s, also weighed in on fashion's current fixation on girls with curves: "I’m all up for healthy beautiful women, you know. Cindy, Naomi…they were 8’s, 10’s … They were amazing women, they were not stick thin insects. So, for me I hope this carries on and I know that most magazines are really happy that we now have just beautiful women. It’s definitely a step in the right direction."

R.J. Cutler is Working on a Film Starring Grace Coddington's Catwalk Cats

Vogue creative director and star of The September Issue, Grace Coddington, is getting used to all the public attention she's received since the film's release, telling the Times UK that at least five strangers approach her on the subway every morning. “It’s driving me nuts, actually,” she says. “And I’m loving it.”

Coddington famously ignored director R.J. Cutler's cameras when they arrived on the 12th floor of 4 Times Square to film the Vogue documentary, telling Anna Wintour either the crew leaves or she would. Eventually Cutler won the genius redhead over (through a meeting with his cinematographer) and secured key footage of the power struggle and mutual admiration between Wintour and Coddington from which the film pulls its most compelling story.

Now Cutler and Coddington are again working together on a film based loosely on "The Catwalk Cats" a book penned and illustrated by Coddington. “It’s a bit of a battle, actually,” she says of the collaboration. “I’m fighting for it not to turn into some Disney thing.” Somehow we think she'll get her way.

>> Anna Wintour walked out to David Letterman's couch last night, Madonna's "Vogue" playing in the background, wearing Carolina Herrera and her trademark sunglasses - she subsequently took them off to give Dave a hard time about his socks, referring him to Thom Browne, since the designer's elevated pant hemlines show off a man's socks.

She definitely brought her witty side out last night - when Letterman asked if it was a fair assessment to say she's bigger than what she does for a living, she referred to Maureen Dowd's recent column: “I read in the New York Times this week that I'm an ice queen, I'm the Sun King, I'm an alien fleeing from District 9 and I'm a dominatrix. So I reckon that makes me a lukewarm royalty with a whip from outer space. What do you think?"

Later, Letterman compared fashion models on the runway to "beautiful women who look like the Neptunians have released them. But nobody buys that stuff, do they? Is somebody walking around like they’re from Neptune?” Wintour laughed: "Lots of people. I'm an alien, remember?"

She suppressed giggles after the clip from The September Issue in which she berates Vogue style director Elissa Santisi was played, and chastises Letterman for calling her last-minute to appear on the show. When he asked if The Devil Wears Prada was made about her, she was coy: “Well, I seem to remember that actually the movie was a work of fiction and we really like fiction at Vogue.” When prompted about what percentage of decisions she makes at the magazine, she replies: "100 percent." And when Letterman notes that The September Issue leaves Vogue seeming as if it's run by people his age, she quips: "Vogue is not only run by senior citizens."

Meanwhile, Vogue contributing editor Lauren Santo Domingo "was really surprised at the amount of access" the filmmakers were given. "There were even things I'm not privy to or I'm not aware of - things that go on in the art department, in the photo room. I've never been in any of those meetings." [WWD, FWD, The Cut]

The September Issue Premiere: All About Anna Wintour

>> Last night, Anna Wintour hosted a premiere of The September Issue (which opens Aug. 28 in NYC, Sept. 11 nationwide), and no one dared be late. Arrivals were scheduled to start at 7 pm, but Anna appeared and was joined (despite all the digs about her appearance she receives in the film) by September 2007 cover girl Sienna Miller promptly at 6:45 pm. Even Sean Combs and entourage, when realizing they were late, "sprinted across the lobby," the New York Observer reports.

Despite the general consensus that the film's true star is Grace Coddington, last night was all about Anna. Grace and Andre Leon Talley both avoided being photographed on the red carpet, and it appears that Vogue staffers were required to wear t-shirts for Fashion's Night Out (Anna's pro-shopping pet project) to the event. Grace did comment on her portrayal in the film, however:

I hate to say it, but true to life! A very annoying person. But it’s not really bickering. It’s a process you have to go through for the job we do and it just makes everything stronger. Whatever gets through is then very valid and very strong. I think they focused on me in the movie because I’m a bit more outspoken and because I don’t care about the cameras, I’ll say whatever I want to say and I won’t hold back.

Bee Shaffer, who attended in Proenza Schouler and reminded her mother to put on her sunglasses while on the red carpet (which Anna duly did), thought her own scene in the film was "so embarassing":

It’s funny because that was two years ago and I wanted to go to law school then and that’s basically all I’m talking about and now I don’t want to go to law school at all so . . . [I] still don’t want to work in fashion, that was never a possibility. Now I’d like to work in theater.

Marc Jacobs, who was apparently speaking with a French accent, had his own Anna tribute to share. "She’s a risk-taker unafraid of taking chances. She doesn’t suck up,” he said. “And she’s been very good to me on a personal level as well. When I was having some personal problems, Anna was always there for me. She’s very maternal and caring to people she cares about."

>> Andre Leon Talley Almost Didn't Make the Final Cut of The September Issue -Last night, The September Issue director RJ Cutler made an appearance at the SoHo Apple Store in New York, revealing that in the process of editing down the enormous amount of footage he had, Andre Leon Talley was actually entirely eliminated from a late-stage cut of the film. He mentioned that after Anna Wintour saw a rough cut of the film, she had a long list of suggestions - perhaps one of them was getting ALT back, because as we know, he and his "famine of beauty" are definitely in the final cut.
