The Face To Be Revived?

>> With all the downsizing going on at i-D and T, plus Mixte folding, it's nice to be able to counter it all with something good. Rumors are swirling that The Face, the British style magazine that closed after a 24 year run in May 2004, is about to get up and running again.

Supposedly, executives at Bauer Media have tapped former FHM editor Anthony Noguera to oversee proposals, with aims to have the brand revived next year - but in a new format. The publisher is said to be mulling a number of options, including relaunching The Face as digital-only, a free magazine, or a subscription-only title. Apparently Bauer has ruled out reviving the brand as a monthly newstand title, as it was previously, but declined to comment on the rumors, except to say that it has no plans to relaunch The Face.

Fashion Magazines With Less Retouching: The Future or a Current Fad?

>> In the March 2008 issue of Vogue, premier retoucher of fashion photographs, Pascal Dangin, tweaked a total of 144 images, from ads to editorial spreads, and in The September Issue, which focuses on the making of Vogue's September 2007 issue, Anna Wintour definitely displays a reliance on retouching, asking Mario Testino to superimpose cover girl Sienna Miller's head from one shot onto her body in another shot, and requesting that a cameraman's gut from an editorial shot be diminished, to Grace Coddington's dismay: "Everybody isn't perfect in this world. It's enough that the models are perfect."

When digital manipulation programs first came into use in the early '90s, reports Eric Wilson for The New York Times, art directors originally used them to create a heightened sense of reality like images achieved through movie special effects - "hyper real" style, as former The Face art director and current Love creative director Lee Swillingham coined it - as a reaction against the images of supermodels that looked too perfect. Editors weren't suggesting the resulting look be attainable, Swillingham explains: “We were trying to create a future fashion. You could do something that looked gritty and real or something that looked like plastic.”

Pamela Love's strong, intensely sculptural jewelry. Following the architectural trend that is emerging for Fall, many of Love's pieces loosely referenced steel beams for building. Countering this notion of industry was the use of turquoise, which added an earthiness to the collection as well as a welcome jolt of color.

>> Night falls on Kimberly Ovitz's Fall 2012 collection. That is, dark, serious hues - mainly black and brown - defined the edgy pieces that came down the moody runway. Draping, asymmetry, sheerness, layering, and a play on proportions and textures consumed the powerful clothes. And except for a few minidresses and some sheer tops, there was barely any showing of skin - proof that sexy has a new badass face. On the accessories front, Kimberly kept things minimal, save for a couple off-kilter sashes and neck scarves made from pitch-black hair.

Karl Lagerfeld on Staying Thin, Being Human - and More

In addition to featuring a Lagerfeld-sketched cover, a tour of Lagerfeld's work space, and interviews with some of Lagerfeld's most famous cohorts - Haider Ackermann, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Florence Welch, Carine Roitfeld - "The World According to Karl" edition also provides quite a bit of insight into the mind of the Chanel helmer himself. Read on for highlights:

On being human: "I look the part. But I’m not that human, hm? But more down-to-earth than me, you will never find. You cannot be more down-to-earth."

On his diet: "I haven't touched sugar, sweets, butter, cake, cheese - all of that - for more than 11 years, and I'm not even tempted. I’m beyond temptation. I think that's the best thing that can happen in life."

On his weight: "I found out that clothes are much better than scales and things like this. Clothes don't lie. If you have only clothes in one size and nothing one millimeter bigger, the minute something hurts somewhere, you know it's time. And always keep a pair of tight jeans, something tight for control. I know a woman who every year put on her wedding dress just to see if she can still fit in it. It's only a problem if you have four or five weddings."

On his sex drive: "No, I'm not very much interested in that. But it's not a question of time, people can make quickies, you know."

On Lana Del Rey: "I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana Del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She's not alone with implants."

On people saying he's done too many collaborations: "I couldn't care less. It depends if I know the people. If unknown people say this, they should send me a note and explain why. The limit is up to me to decide."

On watching television: "I like to be on TV, but I don't watch TV. I have no time for that . . . I prefer to live on my imagination."

On death: "I couldn't care less . . . if you ask me, it's like a sleep where you don't wake up. You don't remember before, you don't remember after. The only thing is, I don't want to be seen dead, huh? So anyway, over, over. The battery is finished, huh? Pfft."

Abbey Lee Kershaw Fronts the New Gucci, Jerry Hall Returns to the Catwalk, and Kate Moss Is Not Into Twitter

Abbey Lee Kershaw is the face of a new set of Gucci fragrances. The fragrances launch this March and all have names that start with "G" - Gorgeous Gardenia, Gracious Tuberose, Glamorous Magnolia, Generous Violet, Glorious Mandarin - "because of Gucci, of course," explains the brand's creative director, Frida Giannini. Jerry Hall returned to the catwalk this week to walk Jean Luc Amsler's couture show in Paris. The 55-year-old wasn't the only older model to grace the couture runways; Yasmin Le Bon, 47, walked Stéphane Rolland's show wearing a 110-pound dress. [Telegraph]

Here's a First Look at the Marni For H&M Ad Campaign

This ad - which recently surfaced on The Fashion Spot - features what appears to be the British actress lounging in a leopard print-filled room, wearing a super-shiny paisley ensemble. A QR code in the bottom left corner directs viewers to the campaign video, which - as WWD confirmed last month - was shot by Sofia Coppola. While it is yet to be confirmed that the star of Coppola's video is the star of this ad campaign, we do know one thing: Coppola filmed the video last October in Marrakesh - and judging by the Moroccan-style tile work in the background of this image, it looks like this photo may have been shot there as well.

In honor of yesterday's Karl by Karl Lagerfeld launch, Net-a-Porter has released a video of the designer interviewing himself. [Fashionista]

Rihanna will cohost a new fashion reality show in which unknown designers will face off, Project Runway-style. "This show is here to discover those people and give them a shot. I’m looking for someone who can think outside the box, and who isn't going to give up at the first hurdle," the singer said. The yet-to-be-named show will debut on the UK's Sky Living channel this Summer. [Huffington Post]

Victoria's Secret has launched its first high-end lingerie line, called The Victoria's Secret Designer Collection. Though it includes pieces that were shown during November's fashion show, the line had been kept top secret - until now. It's available at VictoriasSecret.com, and retails between $38 and $298. Speaking of lingerie, Bar Refaeli is the latest model to launch her own line of intimates. The label is called Under.me and will be available online in the UK for Valentine's Day. Priced from $7.50 to $25, Refaeli says the line is based on what "I like and find cute". [WWD]

Alice Dellal - the new face of Chanel's Boy Bag - has been looking a lot less "punk" lately. At the Chanel couture show (left), she wore a long skirt and a lace top. She kept her mismatched nails though. [Telegraph]
