Donatella Brings that Versace Glamour to the Whitney Museum Art Gala

>> For the second year running, the Whitney Art Musem Gala was Donatella Versace's party. Editors - Olivier Zahm, Lauren Santo Domingo, Glenda Bailey - commingled with designers - Peter Som, Moises de la Renta, Ruffian's Claude Morais and Brian Wolk - and a smattering of models like Chanel Iman and Hana Soukupova. Christopher Kane's Versus designs even made an appearance - the Fall 2009 crystal shoes were on Byrdie Bell's feet, and Taylor Momsen - who seems to be close with the Versaces, particularly Allegra, changed into a black Spring 2010 Versus frock for the Studio Party post-Gala Dinner.

Donatella was fashionably late to the party - two hours in, she was nowhere to be found; perhaps she was still upstairs tending to VIPs - as was Lindsay Lohan, who swept in, all blonde hair and gold dress - earning comparisons to Donatella's trademark look. Lohan said she came "for Donatella" before beelining to Brian Atwood for a chat. Keeping with the "art chic" theme, the walls of one whole room at the party downstairs was covered in paper for guests to scribble on.

Alexander Wang Evolves With Sportswear-Centric Spring 2010 Collection

>> Alexander Wang hinted recently that he was ready to evolve, telling W's September 2009 issue: "As soon as people get used to what you’re doing, you have to change direction." And evolve he did for Spring 2010: the look of his last few collections, with their body-clinging shapes and primarily black palettes, was replaced by a generally looser silhouette and all shades of khaki, tan, olive, and gray. He told WWD that Spring 2010 for him "is very much about classic American sportswear," and the idea is visible in pieces like a sweatshirt dress with football pad detailing (below) and all the shinguard-like socks cut out at the back of the calf.

But Wang didn't give up the sexy side of his label - there were plenty of bra tops, crop tops, and and lingerie-style shorts to go around. The house was unsurprisingly packed, with Katie Grand (Wang's after-party co-host), Terry Richardson, Olivier Zahm, Diane von Furstenberg (Alex's CFDA-appointed mentor), Erin Wasson, Devon Aoki, Liya Kebede, and Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin all front row. Frankie Rayder, Angela Lindvall, and Iselin Steiro walked, newcomer Mirte Maas opened, Karl Templer styled, and Wang's three styles of sunglasses debuted.

UPDATE: It appears Tom didn't take it as far as we originally thought - he does the photographing for his other campaigns, but in this case, Terry Richardson, who snapped Tom when he appeared in his own fragrance campaign back in 2007, did the honors again. [Models.com]

>> More September Issue Dish: A New LOVE Preview and a Whole Muse Devoted to Natasha Poly -LOVE just released a new preview featuring 13-year-old blogger Tavi of Style Rookie in addition to the first one from earlier this week . Add Twilight's Taylor Lautner, Taylor Swift, and the Willis Sisters - who were photographed back in May - to the list of "New Blood" featured; so far, the only fashion kids listed are Alexander Wang and Allegra Versace. Meanwhile, it the spirit of the recent influx of model-dedicated issues, Muse is devoting their entire Fall/Winter 2009 issue to Natasha Poly: among the contributors are Richard Phillips, and if it coincides with a clue on The Imagist, Craig McDean and Terry Richardson, as well. September Issues: UK Fashion Mags Stick to Models (Save Elle), While US Mags Go with Actresses

>> The biggest issues of the year - for September - are trickling in, so who was chosen to be a big newsstand seller for each major fashion book? Both Harper's Bazaar UK and Vogue UK chose models - Natalia Vodianova by Paola Kudacki and Kate Moss by Mario Testino, respectively - while Harper's Bazaar and Vogue went with actresses - Leighton Meester by Terry Richardson and Charlize Theron (the latter of which is not yet out). American Vogue's choice of an actress is no surprise - in upcoming documentary The September Issue, the magazine's creative director Grace Coddington credits Anna Wintour with foreseeing the power of using celebrities on covers before anyone else - but the model/celebrity divide between the two countries is striking.

Meanwhile at Elle, both UK and US versions chose actresses: the former Lindsay Lohan by Rankin, the latter Jennifer Aniston (a well-known strong newsstand seller) by Alexei Hay.

In the past couple of months, Zahm has offered a number of teasers on the issue: a Gareth Pugh spotlight editorial styled by Francesca Burns, a nude pictorial captured by Mario Sorrenti, a Venice shoot with Baptiste Giabiconi by Karl Lagerfeld, and a set by Paola Kudaki. >> We had a few clues as to who made the cut for Terry Richardson's 2010 Pirelli calendar when he shot it last month in Bahia, Brazil, but now Italian Vanity Fair has the details on the full cast, which includes Daisy Lowe, Georgina Stojiljkovic, Eniko Mihalik, Catherine McNeil, Lily Cole, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Miranda Kerr, Ana Beatriz Barros, Gracie Carvalho, Marloes Horst, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

Terry produced thousands of images from the shoot with the girls holding sloths, fruit, roosters, and holding hands while running through waves in little else than a bikini bottom. The goal this year was to use "no makeup, no reflectors - only the flash of the camera - no branded clothes or jewelry, no girls altered surgically," said Andrea Imperiali, manager of Pirelli on the set. Fifty images will make the final cut when the calendar is debuted Nov. 19 in London, but until then the gallery below - which is NSFW - and a video of the shoot will have to do.

Harper Bazaar's July 2009 Cover Caught Up in Tabloid-Comparison Controversy

>> The July 2009 cover of Harper's Bazaar has become quite the controversary. The newstand cover features a paparazzi picture of Angelina Jolie, from a red carpet last December, pulled from a photo service, and there is no interview with the actress inside. The subscriber's cover, on the other hand, is a portrait of Doutzen Kroes taken by Terry Richardson, with an accompanying editorial inside.

Glenda Bailey writes in her editor's letter: "For a magazine, the best accessory is a beautiful woman on the cover. This month, we have two." Her readers seem to disagree - the Angelina cover has caused an uproar. As Fashionista puts it: "Bazaar is meant to be one of our venerable American fashion magazines. And this reeks of tabloids more than fashion." A chorus of comparisons to Grazia, InTouch Weekly, and US Weekly from various fashion outlets chime in.

Anja Rubik Finally Scores a Major Vogue Cover with Vogue Paris June/July 2009

>> Anja Rubik has been in the game for a number of years, snagging her fair share of runway work and high-profile campaigns, but it's taken until now for her to join her contemporaries in scoring a major Vogue cover. She'll feature on Vogue Paris's prime spot for not one, but two months, since it's the magazine's June/July 2009 issue. The cover was photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, but inside, Anja stars alongside Natasha Poly in an Emmanuelle Alt-styled, Terry Richardson-lensed madcap romp around Paris.
