>> Contrary to popular opinion, Amy Astley says, she didn't work under Anna Wintour when she was editor at House & Garden (HG, as it was called then). In fact, she only met Wintour the day the magazine was shuttered: "So I get the call the day HG closed, would I go and see Anna, and I said sure, of course . . . and they were like, ‘Today, right now.’ And that’s how I learned how Vogue operates - I was like, ‘Can I do it tomorrow? I have to get my outfit together!’ And HR was like, ‘No, she’s ready for you now, right now.’ So I toddled up there in my little Agnes B. T-shirt and my brand new Chanel ballet slippers that cost, like, a week’s salary." She was hired as beauty associate at Vogue and promoted soon after to beauty director: "I stayed at Vogue for nine years - I did four test issues of Teen Vogue, I edited Index - and I didn’t think Conde Nast was going to launch Teen Vogue, so I got pregnant for the second time, and Anna and Mr. [Si] Newhouse called me in. I was nine days away from giving birth - I was so fat. I had gained, like, forty pounds . . . I was huge! And they said, ‘We’re going to launch Teen Vogue, and we want you to edit it.’ I literally gave birth to my second child Ingrid as the magazine was being launched, so she and it are the same age - eight. >> Erin Kaplan, Elle's PR director who played foil to Olivia Palermo on the now-cancelled The City, sent an email out to contacts earlier today that she is leaving the magazine for Teen Vogue. Kaplan spent over five years at Elle and has been named Teen Vogue's Senior Director of PR. Since editor Amy Astley hinted last year that Teen Vogue is developing a new TV show, many are drawing the conclusion that Kaplan's jump - given her TV experience - may be related. >> When Rachel Zoe previewed her new signature collection this morning, among the pieces was a sleeveless white sequined dress with a graphic black pattern. While it's no secret that Zoe is a vintage hound, and many designers draw on vintage pieces for inspiration, this afternoon, Teen Vogue's Jane Keltner de Valle Tweeted a picture of Zoe styling a Teen Vogue intern in a strikingly similar dress, credited as a What Comes Around Goes Around vintage dress, in the magazine's October 2007 issue. >> Over the weekend, Teen Vogue held its annual Fashion University in New York for budding fashion industry followers, and Anna Wintour gave a seminar in which she was surprisingly frank. A few highlights, relayed from the Twitterverse:

When previewing the cover of the "Vogue's Best Dressed" bookazine, which is out in November and features Blake Lively in a gold dress, she shed some light on why Vogue cover subjects tend to repeat: "We pick girls we can go back to. It was hard to ignore Blake when she came on the scene . . . I told Tonne [Goodman, Vogue fashion director] to 'Vogue her.' We did her hair, gave her glamorous clothes . . ."

On the controversial Lebron James and Gisele Bundchen April 2008 Vogue cover: "It got me in a lot of trouble. Uh, that was an interesting experience."

On working with Andre Leon Talley: "[He] used to write me color-coded letters. If they were blue, he was depressed. If they were gold, I was golden"

On casting models: "Gisele Bundchen, along with Kate Moss, is a phenomenon. I wish models knew they have to have a personality."

On turning down jobs: "I was offered the editorship at British Vogue. But London felt small-time."

And, on losing jobs: "I worked for American Harper's Bazaar . . . they fired me. I recommend that you all get fired, it's a great learning experience."

Tom Florio's Post-Conde Nast Plans; Why Carol Smith Likely Can't Take Over - Yet

>> Tom Florio, according to insiders, was almost out of a job at Conde Nast late last year, but yesterday, he decided to leave on his own terms and the parting seems to be amicable.

Florio, who leaves Conde Nast as SVP and publishing director, overseeing Vogue, Teen Vogue, Bon Appetit, and Conde Nast Traveler, at the end of this month after 25 years, told WWD: “I’m just in a position to do something else. It could be in TV; it could be on many platforms. It also could be that I will be working closely with Condé Nast. We’ll see.”

Florio reportedly wants to run his own show and met with executives at IMG shortly after yesterday's announcement; an announcement in the entertainment world is said to be forthcoming.
