Tara Subkoff To Launch New Imitation Label

>> After undergoing surgery for a brain tumor at the end of last year, Tara Subkoff is back on the scene with a new fashion venture: Imitation. The forthcoming line allows her to "bring back" her former label Imitation of Christ in "its most basic incarnation," she tells Harper's Bazaar, "easy-to-wear staples with an edge . . . I'm inspired by Coco Chanel and her use of jersey. I'd like to do that with Imitation. I want something as effortless as a T-shirt, but in dress, trench, and jacket shapes."

Subkoff added of her time doing Imitation of Christ: "The name got so big, and it appeared to be such a giant success, but like most things that are artistic and creative and amazing, it was never this financial powerhouse. It was an art project. It was rewarding to spearhead, and it was a great collaboration with Matt Damhave and so many other amazing people, but I had to work about four or five other jobs - a shoe collaboration with Easy Spirit and consulting for Sara Lee Apparel (which owned Wonderbra, Hanes, and Playtex) - just to keep the company afloat."

Burberry Brings Rain, A New Skyline Addition to New York

>> New York Mayor Bloomberg declared yesterday "Burberry Day," in honor of the lighting of the brand's logo atop its new US headquarters - watch a video of it going down here - and the weather complied with rain, appropriate for a brand known for their trench coats. "I was worried about the drizzle before, but now I love it," said Christopher Bailey, in town to celebrate. "It's all very English."

Christopher arrived to the unveiling last night with Lily Donaldson on his arm, who grinned and gushed about being "a Burberry girl" and "part of the [Burberry] family." He went on to explain what an honor it it is to have the Burberry logo lit in the first place: "It's one of only six grandfathered buildings in New York where you can do that, so it's a big deal for us to be able to affect the iconic Manhattan skyline, which I love."

The excitement seems to have made him chatty - he covered a range of topics, from admitting that he dyed his hair blue once to discussing advertising fees - like Mario Testino's, which runs $140,000 a day: "You’re buying talent. And I think talent never goes away with the changing economy, and talent is something we all need to keep nurturing."

Models (Hilary Rhoda, Helena Christensen) mingled with editors (Kate Lanphear, who apparently has dyed her hair black underneath, Amy Astley, Cecilia Dean) and it girls (Byrdie Bell, Alexa Chung, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Harley Viera-Newton), and the mix left at least one girl confiding that she didn't recognize Blake Lively - Lily Donaldson, who admitted: "I don't watch Gossip Girl. But you can't blame me. I don't even own a TV at the moment!"

The celebration seemed a success, except for skimping in one area. An alcohol shortage kicked in around 9:30 pm, leaving one guest unhappy: "That's the driest party I've ever been to." Same goes for Harley, Leigh Lezark, and Derek Blasberg, The Cut tweeted: "The party has run out of glasses, and the trio is displeased."

Front Row Jessica Stam Has a Backstage Setback at Charlotte Ronson

This morning, when Stam and Tara Subkoff tried to go backstage at Charlotte Ronson before taking their front row seats for the show, they were told by PR they're weren't on the list. "Jessica Stram? Stam? No, not on the list . . . Tara who? Nope, sorry."

Jessica, clearly less than thrilled - she was front row at Charlotte Ronson last year and is a friend of the designer - finally called in reinforcements, and was led backstage.

>> It's just getting to be autumn, and here we are, New York Fashion Week is upon us to bring the Spring/Summer 2006 shows. First up, Imitation of Christ:

Most of the world (or the people who care) is going to vomit all over me for saying this, but I actually really like this minidress. I know you think I'm slipping (I was really kind of wondering about it myself), but there's something just attracts me to the loose fit, the jumper cut, the off-the-shoulder sleeves -- the rawness, really.

And then came the penis (far right). Along with the debut of her denim collection, Tara Subkoff decided to put in a little shocker, leaving me thinking: "I want one!" (...to never be seen ever again). The dress must have been a flash of brilliance, because between the denim penis and vampire cape combo, and this lovely little white tee and really really ridiculously long skirt, I was not impressed.
