Dasha Zhukova Chose Britney Spears for POP's Multiple Fall 2010 Covers

>> The latest artist to collaborate with Pop on a cover under Dasha Zhukova's reign is Takashi Murakami, who art directed Britney Spears as a manga character - complete with with wedding dress and veil (image here), schoolgirl backpack, Hello Kitty cell phone, and ankle socks - for the magazine's multiple Fall 2010 covers. Spears, who was photographed by Todd Cole for the occasion, told Grazia that pre-shoot, "We looked at a lot of characters and artwork before we shot, so I could get a feel for what [Murakami] was looking for."

>> To mark six years of collaboration and the release of the Multicolor Spring Palette, Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami just released a colorful anime short film, "Superflat First Love," as a sequel to Murakami's "Superflat Monogram" anime short from 2003. The trailer was released back in late April, but now the full film is available; the plush character that stars in the new film is currently in Louis Vuitton stores as part of Murakami's interior makeover.

The Thakoon for Target collection, which will hit shelves in a few short weeks, is a major crowd-pleaser--resort-friendly with fantastic bold prints, when fashionistas wear these duds in December it should be hard to miss..

In Fifth Avenue news...the Louis Vuitton store will unveil their holiday decorations this weekend with translucent, multi-color monogram wrapping on the exterior of the building. The installation was created by none other than Takashi Murakami.

Last night marked the opening of a two-story Juicy Couture flagship also on Fifth Avenue and here's a photo gallery to prove it. The event was...inspired.

There's a new street style aggregate and those in favor of the medium have put their stamp of approval on it. We're happy to for the organization but, please, give a gal an index!

Today it rained all day and we thought it was Thursday by accident but that didn't stop us from getting down to business and keeping the fashion momentum--nor did it stop our Network Partners!.

We learn about a new brand every day...Clothes Pin gave a shoutout to Hoakon/Helga, a new eco-friendly accessories company based in Canada.

We received a tutorial on Takashi Murakami from Fashion Nation as part of an ongoing course on Japanese designers. We think her investment in talking about the East in the West is a wise one.

Sandra Backlund might not be an unknown designer but we agree with The Bread And Butter that her designs are positively mesmerizing.

Finally, this post was the sweetest in our Network today. Kingdom Of Style talked about receiving a gift and also the more meaningful merits of blogging.

Rich Creatives Honored To Raise Money For Poor Creatives at Pratt's Legends 2008 Scholarship Benefit

Last evening the Pratt Institute hosted its annual Legends 2008 Scholarship Benefit at Lighthouse at Pier 61 in Manhattan honoring Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, Takashi Murakami, and Julian Schnabel with host PBS anchor Charlie Rose. Pratt, long treated as the younger sibling of powerhouses FIT and Parson's, has had a chance to shine with the Legends Awards which were conceived in 1999 by the Board of Trustees to celebrate distinguished figures in the world of art, design, and the humanities. The event’s mission is to raise funds to provide financial aid to Pratt students based on need and merit.

Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel was honored for her decades of dedication and advocacy for the arts, design, architecture, and landmark preservation while Takashi Murakami received an award for his achievement in contemporary art. Lastly Julian Schnabel was honored for achievements in just about every area of the arts.

We personally love that while the event is clearly heavily skewed towards the rich creative set that Charlie Rose, one of America's favorite intellectuals, had the host duties. But we suppose with chair Marjorie Kuhn and trustees Kurt Andersen and Amy Cappellazzo there is a bit of the old New York diversity.

Monogramouflage And The Brooklyn Ball

The rumors surrounding the Brooklyn Ball on April 3rd are reaching a fever pitch. The Ball will be held at the Brooklyn Museum to celebrate a pop-up shop with the Louis Vuitton Monogramouflage collection. And while we steer away from celebrities there are a few fashion names attending i.e Kayne and Jay-Z. Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, and Takashi Murakami to be exact. Pop culture at its finest even if it makes us feel slimy. The breakdown: Vuitton is handling the monograms, Jacobs (for Vuitton) and Murakami, the canvas paintings (those will be squashed together), Kanye West will hold down the flare, and hipsters will be standing in the bathroom line. The event is also being thrown to kick off the Murakami retrospective, open to the public some days later.

>> The Time 100 List of Most Influential People was released today, and three fashion notables made the cut: Karl Lagerfeld, Carine Roitfeld, and Takashi Murakami. The fun thing about this list is that Time gets other big names to write about the honorees' sphere of influence, so Marc Jacobs did the honors for Takashi, Hedi Slimane for Carine, and architect Zaha Hadid for Karl.

Marc Jacobs' piece on Takashi comes across sounding exactly like you would expect Marc to write - daydreamy, and always self-consciously obsessed with the cool:

When I first saw Takashi Murakami's work, I smiled and wondered, Where did this explosion come from? Who was responsible for this collision of psychedelia, manga and, well, art? Then I thought, I would love it if the mind that imagined this dizzying world of jellyfish eyes, singing moss, magic mushrooms and morphing creatures would be willing to have a go at the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram.

So I e-mailed Takashi. And he answered. Before long, there he was, standing in my Paris office, wearing his round, wire-rimmed glasses, skeleton-print T shirt, baggy short pants and a sort of samurai ponytail. He looked like a cool skater kid, an eternal teenager.

Hedi clearly adores Carine:

Carine, 53, has always been a charismatic Parisian, one of the most Parisian women I know, in every detail of her life. She has immaculate taste, and she is beyond unconventional in her thinking. With time I discovered that we shared a few principles: a preference for the "now" rather than the "new," a preference for imperfection rather than so-called good taste and an attitude driven by intuition rather than reason. Most of all, she has an innate ability to mix street culture and society, always avoiding the caricatures that can define both worlds and always recognizing the mix of both worlds as the only catalyst of energy and creativity.

And Karl, well, he's still convincing the world that he's 69 rather than 74.

>> A casual comment was made at a dinner party: "Gee, Marc Jacobs is the new Andy Warhol." Fast forward, and bam! Enter Interview's June/July 2008 issue, Marc Jacobs on the cover complete with white makeup and Warholian white wig.

The accompanying article focus on Marc's obsession with art, his artist collaborations with the likes of Takashi Murakami and Stephen Sprouse, his art-inspired advertising, and his club-like stores - "Andy was always talking about how new art is business art," cover story writer Glenn O'Brien explained. However, Marc doesn't necessary agree with the comparison:

I don't think of myself that way. Warhol is Warhol. He's practically a god. I thought, 'I'm going to get a lot of hell for this.'

But he did have a good time on the 12-hour editorial shoot with photographer Mikael Jansson: "Even though my scalp and eyelids were completely sore, it was all worth it. It was just a ball." Fun for us, too - when else are you going to see Marc in falsies and his own Louis Vuitton heels?
