Jean Paul Gaultier Chooses Androgynous Male Model Andrej Pejic As His Spring 2011 Couture Bride

>> Despite the fact that his Spring 2011 couture show was inspired by the English punk rock movement and the French can can, Jean Paul Gaultier didn't play any musical soundtrack. Instead, the models paraded in their mohawks and their individual outfits - named things like "The Clash," "Belle Epoque," "Anarchy in the UK," and "Moulin Rouge" - carrying a number in the old school couture way, with Catherine Deneuve calling out the number and then describing the looks in a voiceover. The show, which started over an hour late, culminated in the androgynous male model Andrej Pejic - Gaultier's new favorite - appearing as couture bride in a semi-sheer gown. As the model parade ended, Gaultier finally let the music loose, unleashing a Crazy Horse can can dancer to do splits and kicks down the runway to Offenbach as Deneuve and Pedro Almodovar cheered. The designer took his bow with Farida Khelfa, who walked and also recently completed a documentary on him.

Backstage, Jeanne Beker reports, Gaultier said he "has disdain for the red carpet. Loved seeing Marion Cotillard in his mermaid dress [at the 2008 Oscars] BUT.....He wonders why some houses actually PAY actresses to wear their dresses. And he misses CHER!"

Spring 2009 Atelier Versace: Red Carpet Ruffles and Whorls

>> Chanel and Dior may go full-out with couture presentations, but Donatella Versace prefers to do private appointments in January for Atelier Versace. A gown from her pleat-centric Fall 2008 collection made it to the Oscars on Marisa Tomei last weekend, and now that that's over, it's time for the big reveal: Spring 2009. The collection, modeled by Georgina Stojiljkovic, who seems to be Donatella's favorite couture model, focuses on ruffled red carpet-ready gowns, with a couple of whorled cut-out confections thrown in for good measure. Sketches included.

Spring 2009 Dior Proves Couture Still Going Strong

>> While editor attendance may not be as high as in the past, executives aren't too concerned about the state of couture. In fact, this week, no drop in client attendance is expected at the shows, and growth - albeit lower than that in 2008 - is still predicted for 2009. Judging by John Galliano's colorful, theatrical Spring 2009 outing today, with blue and white delft prints, stained glass backdrop, and corseted crinoline gowns that took 300 to 400 hours each to make, the top brass at Dior isn't too worried, either.

Charlotte Gainsbourg Stiffed by Balenciaga

>> Balenciaga campaigns are never my favorite, but as more, bigger pictures from the Fall 2008 set with Charlotte Gainsbourg appear, I'm left with a more disappointed feeling than usual.

According to Nicholas Ghesquiere, the goal was to have Charlotte embody the "more mature" collection with a severe chignon, arch makeup, and angular couture poses, directly contrasting with her everyday laidback appeal.

In between point A and point B, however, the essence of Charlotte has been lost - I can't even see her in these pictures. I know that Nicholas has been playing the idea with stiff women robots for some seasons now (those Spring 2007 Tron-inspired leggings, the stances in Jennifer Connelly's ads), but this time, it's not a good representation of the collection, which albeit hard-edged, has an undeniably sexy facet to it.

>> Finding unlikely red carpet success: the fish scales of Jean Paul Gaultier's Spring 2008 couture collection. When Marion Cotillard wore her mermaid dress to the Oscars in February, she quipped simply: "When I saw this dress from his last collection, I knew I wanted to wear it." Meanwhile, Gwyneth Paltrow wore another piece from the collection yesterday during her worldwide promotion of Iron Man.

They both looked great, and more importantly, it wasn't just the same old red carpet fare. Here's to hoping that someone else will feel like pulling a Little Mermaid for the Costume Institute Gala.
