Nicola Formichetti Confirmed as Thierry Mugler Creative Director

>> Thierry Mugler has finally confirmed the rumors: Nicola Formichetti, most widely known as Lady Gaga's stylist, is the house's new men's and women's wear creative director. He will oversee Sebastian Peigne, a 10 year Balenciaga veteran and Mugler's new women's head designer, and Romain Kremer, who has shown experimental men's looks since 2005 and has been named Mugler's new men's head designer.

Formichetti, who will show his first collection for Fall 2011, succeeds Rosemary Rodriguez. He is also fashion director of Vogue Hommes Japan and a contributing editor of V, Dazed & Confused, and Another Magazine; a Mugler spokeswoman said he would continue his editorial and celebrity work.

“We were looking for a young talent who could really bring new energy to the brand,” said Joel Palix, director general of the Mugler company. “Nicola is a multicultural, techno-savvy expert involved in fashion, communication, image and entertainment. He and the appointed talented designers will represent a new direction for French fashion."

Now, there's talk that Pugh may land elsewhere. There was a rumor last Fall that Thierry Mugler was looking to fully relaunch his womenswear label for Spring 2011 under current Mugler artistic director Rosemary Rodriguez. Now, however, WWD reports that Mugler is looking to change the direction of the label and has approached several potential candidates. One such candidate? None other than Gareth Pugh.

>> Thierry Mugler shuttered his couture line back in 2003 and has primarily pursued fragrance since, but he's slowly creeping back into fashion. Along with serving as creative adviser on everything from lighting to choreography for Beyonce's current tour, he also contributed 58 or so costumes for the spectacle.

The house was re-opened in 2008 under the creative direction of Rosemary Rodriguez, who has since shown several menswear collections and a small womenswear capsule collection during Paris Fashion Week back in March. Yesterday at Moscow Fashion Week, she sent out a mix of new creations and archive pieces down the runway, and word is, reports Fashion Week Daily, "Mugler has privately set next October as the re-launch date for the ready-to-wear effort - to be shown in Paris - with Rodriguez fully in charge."

Thierry Mugler, Born-Again

>> After five years of nothing, Thierry Mugler womenswear is ripe for revival. A capsule collection, dubbed Thierry Mugler Edition, will be presented next week, as designed by Rosemary Rodriguez, who worked closely with Mugler from 1994 to 1999.

The revival was prompted by growing demand (see Naomi Watts' and Caroline Trentini's Costume Institute Gala dresses, left) and by the resurgence of Mugler shapes in other designers' work. Emphasis is now being placed on retaining but also modernizing the sharp-shouldered Mugler silhouette.

Meanwhile, Thierry himself is still acting as artistic director for the house's beauty lines . . .
