Richard Avedon Exhibition To Open At International Center Of Photography

There's nothing like the air-conditioned calm of a gallery opening during a sweltering New York summer--and this one should be on any fashion lover's calendar. The exhibition opens May 14th and stays open through September 6th. It calls itself "the first exhibition devoted exclusively to Richard Avedon’s fashion work" and is slated to include some 175 photographs from Avedon's career. Avedon is most widely known for his work in the 50's and 60's at Harper's Bazaar and in the 70's and 80's at Vogue (he went to Vogue when Diana Vreeland did). Avedon was also the inspiration behind Stanley Donen's film Funny Face starring Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn. Let's hope the film is playing down the street at Bryant Park this summer, so that one could make a whole Avedon evening of it.

The Picture of Dorian Leigh

>> If a five foot, five inch woman tried to be a model these days, she'd hardly be taken seriously. Sixty-odd years ago, it was a different story . . . at least for Dorian Leigh, it was.

Ms. Leigh, who passed away earlier this week at 91 after battling Alzheimer's, was widely considered one of the world's first supermodels. In fact, her life was full of firsts: she was one of the first models to be known by name, and after her own modeling career, she opened what is called the first modeling agency in Paris.

Though Dorian started her career late — when she was 27 in 1944, she met with Diana Vreeland, told her she was 19, and landed a Harper's Bazaar cover right then and there — she appeared on seven Vogue covers in the 1940s, and claimed to be earning a whopping $300,000 a year.

She played muse to numerous bold name photographers: Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon, Louise Dahl-Wolfe, Irving Penn — the last of whom she had an affair with, and may have been the inspiration for Holly Golightly in Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's. But she didn't take her job too seriously, declaring in 1953: "I'd rather have a baby than a mink coat."

Tom Ford on Why He Takes His Own Photos

>> With A Single Man opening in limited release this Friday, Dec. 11 - apparently Aline Weber has a cameo - Tom Ford has been on a serious press blitz this week. Monday, he had 20 television and 12 print interviews; last night, he appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon - video here; and this morning, it was appearances on Good Morning America and The Martha Stewart Show. But film promotion isn't the only thing on his mind - in the December/January 2010 issue of Interview, Ford explains why he's gone the Karl Lagerfeld route and started to photograph a lot of his advertising images himself:

Even in fashion, it’s become ridiculous - 60 people to take a still photograph. I’ve started taking my own because I got so sick of all of that. I work with my one photo assistant, and a model, and hair and makeup, and that’s it. And, you know, I worked a good bit with Helmut Newton and with Richard Avedon, and the other day with David Bailey. For that whole school of photographers, it’s always been one assistant, one key light, one camera, one backdrop. And these guys worked on film. No one works on film anymore. I don’t shoot on film: That’s the only reason I can be a photographer. »

Paris Agencies Go Comic Book for Spring 2010 Show Packages

>> So far this season, the most eye-catching show package came courtesy of One Management, who had their stable of models mimic an iconic '60s Harper's Bazaar cover by Richard Avedon, but a couple of Paris agencies are running a close second, and curiously, they are both feeling the comic book look. Women Paris altered portfolio pictures of the likes of Iris Strubegger and Iselin Steiro into with a little high contrast look and a splat of yellow, and WM emulated Sin City for their gaggle of fresh faces.

>> Spring 2010 show packages with New York Fashion Week just over a week away: Supreme went goth with the help of photographer Hanna Liden, Major Model Management enlisted the help of student artist Rachel Chiu to illustrate their roster, and Irina Lazareanu looks poised to make a runway return - her card is in the mix at Marilyn. But thus far, the most eye-catching rests with One Management - they had icons like Ann Catherine Lacroix, Tasha Tilberg, and Colette Pechekhonova, plus Prada favorite Ymre Stiekema, all done up '60s Richard Avedon-style, complete with helmet from his 1965 Harper's Bazaar cover. >> One of the shows in New York I am most looking forward to is Rodarte (Tuesday at 6 pm!), so I thought I would share this little tidbit for all you fellow fans, courtesy of style.com, which of course got a preview last Thursday:

"It's Gainsborough meets Richard Avedon," Laura Mulleavy said, showing off six looks-five dresses and one pantsuit-that made lovely use of the duo's stash of antique lace, some of which is hand-painted. Expect blacks, whites, yellow-golds, shocking pinks, and, in a departure from their more sinuous fall pieces, lots of stiff volumes.
