Saunders Shows A Perky Pollini

Scottish designer Joanthan Saunders is having a truly excellent Fall, his Target Go International collection will be hitting stores in October, his own Spring 2009 collection was a voluminous expansion of his usually tailored vision, and his first collection for Pollini was a pleasantly colorful and commercial interpretation of the brand. Pollini's parent company, Aeffe, will no doubt be pleased to see just how well Saunders has been able to combine his own expertize in prints and tailoring with Pollini's rich history of vibrant hued design.

The collection was just a little more girlie than typical Saunders with frills, chiffon dresses and polka dots but it was in the graphic colorblock appeal of green and purple or orange and pink that we saw the designers personal style shine within the classic Pollini fair. We were impressed that Saunders strayed from his preference for sheen and bold bright colors, instead tempering the impact of the collection with more muted hues and even black and gray. This left us feeling the collection was solidly in touch with the preferences of today's consumers who may as it turns out be into Italian fashion for somewhat more prosaic reasons: it lasts.

Jonathan Saunders's First Pollini Collection: The Reviews Are In

>> Jonathan Saunders used colors aplenty and frothy, full skirts in his namesake Spring 2009 collection, and there was more where that came from for his first outing at Pollini. Complemented by Nicholas Kirkwood's minibags and high heels for the brand, Saunders sent out 27 looks that kept the press interested.

WWD raved: "a promising start of pretty clothes with plenty of commercial appeal"; Vogue UK wholeheartedly approved: "[Pollini] built its reputation on strong colour and prints - and Saunders proved today that he was without doubt the best choice to embrace that history"; and Suzy Menkes of the International Herald Tribune also saw good in the match: "slimmer tailoring, still with graphic patterns, was a less dynamic take and jersey dresses were too complex in their asymmetry. But this was a clear start for Saunders." Now just one important thing remains to be seen - can the collection sell (to editors and consumers)?

>> Pollini is looking to go from little buzz to lots of buzz just like that: They've tapped two very closely watched up-and-comers, Jonathan Saunders and Nicholas Kirkwood, to take over the reins starting with the brand's Spring 2009 collection in September.

Jonathan Saunders will act as the chief designer and creative director for ready-to-wear and licensed products, taking over from Rifat Ozbek, who has been at Pollini for four years. Nicholas Kirkwood has been named accessories director, serving as design director of Pollini shoes and fashion coordinator for Pollini handbags. These changes come with efforts to reposition the brand - so keep your eyes peeled.

Also in the works is an entirely new advertising campaign beginning this Fall - Pollini has tapped photographer Craig McDean and cult favorite graphic design studio M/M (Paris), which has worked with Stella McCartney and Balenciaga on their ad campaigns. Iris Strubuegger, who appears in the new issue of V Magazine, is rumored to be the lucky model.
