Exclusive Video - An Inside Look at the 2012 CFDA Nominee Event

>>You've seen the pictures from Wednesday evening's event - now here's a video that will make you really wish you were there. Put together by Swarovski - who is underwriting the awards for the 11th year in a row now - the video reads like a who's who of the industry. Among those who make cameos? Well, there's Carolina Herrera, Johan Lindeberg, Narciso Rodriguez, Rachel Roy, Rebecca Minkoff, Peter Som, Phillip Lim, Diane von Furstenberg, Pamela Love, Stefano Tonchi, Virginia Smith, Garance Doré, and Scott Schuman - just to name a few. There's also lots of head-nodding, air-kissing, champagne-drinking, and general good times being had all around.

Revealed - The 2012 CFDA Award Nominees & Honorees

>> With a list of nominees that includes The Row's Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen and Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez - not to mention a list of honorees that includes Rei Kawakubo and Johnny Depp - this year's CFDA Awards promise to be extra-exciting. At Wednesday evening's announcement event - held at Diane von Furstenberg's studio and attended by Phillip Lim, Joe Zee, and Rachel Roy - the anticipation was nearly palpable.

"Winning a CFDA Fashion Award is the highest and one of the most coveted honors one can receive in our industry," CEO Steven Kolb said as he announced the nominees and honorees. >> Phillip Lim employed the use of some cleverly-placed panels and a little optical trickery for Fall 2012. The designer said he was interested in "using positive and negative space to evoke neo-noir heroines" and to that end, there was plenty of cool duality to be found here. Crisply tailored separates were kept to a strict palette of neutrals and jeweltones, high-contrast textures were used throughout, and a fog machine on the runway gave it all a graphic-novel effect.

3.1 Phillip Lim Pre-Fall 2012

>> For Pre-Fall 2012, Phillip Lim drew on his lifelong fascination with neo-noir comics like Sin City, Superman, and V for Vendetta. While the inspiration was taken literally in the graphic KA-POW-emblazoned sweaters and clutches, it also moved in more subtle directions: "Everyone wants garments to be superheroes," Lim explained. "This 'fill in the blank' should save your day, your week, your year." Thus, the collection is full of "clothes that adapt to the lifestyle of the modern woman," in the designer's words, including reversible puffer jackets and blazers and skirts with zippers that adjust their proportions.

>> After a few rocky minutes of silence - and waiting for all the photographers to take their places - the audience at Phillip Lim's Spring 2012 show was ready to see some action. Instead, they got serenity in the shape of light-as-air separates and sherbet hues. Lim played with "free form" this season, employing weightless materials and geometric cuts to explore the spirit of kites in motion. On relaxed tops and dresses, fabric was left free at the seams where it caught air and floated away from the body, wing-like. On jackets and vests, the motif manifested in asymmetric folds, simple deconstruction, and fabrics in countering weights.

>> Resort collections are usually synonymous with escapist inspirations, but Phillip Lim is going “against nature” for his Resort 2012 collection, sticking with what he knows best - an urban environment. “The idea of going away is essentially artificial for me. These skyscrapers are my trees,” he explained, indicating his Manhattan surroundings. “At the end of the day, wherever these clothes go, they have to come back here.” Hence the collection's utilitarian elements, found on drawstring-waisted pants and slouchy jackets. Lim is also launching his first accessories collection for Resort this season, including patent leather satchels and latex, open-toed platform booties.
