Designers, Models and Mentors Celebrate the 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards

The CFDA and Vogue magazine held the sixth CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards ceremony last night at Skylight Studios, where Sophie Theallet beat out Alabama Chanin’s Natalie Chanin, Esquivel Shoes’ George Esquivel, Gary Graham, House of Waris’ Waris Ahluwalia, Monique Pean, Ohne Titel’s Flora Gill and Alexa Adams, Patrik Ervell, Spurr’s Simon Spurr and Wayne’s Wayne Lee. Theallet took home the grand prize-$200,000 and a year of mentorship by an industry veteran. Runners-up, Monique Pean and Patrik Ervell will each receive $50,000 and a business mentor.

Cathy Horyn for one feels Theallet deserved the honor, writing this morning, "Her clothes are not flashy or arty; she’s not everybody’s darling. But if you appreciate hand-done details like pin-tucking, if you like a certain friendliness in clothes, and if you’re surprised and delighted by non-generic reds and blues, then you are surely on Sophie’s side."

Albertus Swanepoel, Irene Neuwirth, Philip Crangi, Michael and Nicole Colovos, Alexander Wang, Phillip Lim, Peter Som, Lisa Mayock, Sophie Buhai, and Thakoon Panichgul were among the former fashion fund-ers who came out for the big night; joining Nicole Kidman, Francisco Costa, Anna Wintour, Diane von Furstenberg, and keynote speaker Alber Elbaz.

Retail Happenings: The Metal Shop

Here's a pop-up concept with a little more depth than just collaboration t-shirts and last season's overstock--The Metal Shop, opening in New York this Thursday, will host a variety of designers with the theme of metals in mind. Michael Kors, Helmut Lang, and Patrik Ervell are among designers included in the pop-up which will appear at participating designer, Issey Miyake's Tribeca retail space. The pop-up is being curated in conjunction with The Metal Ball, an event inspired by the legendary Bauhaus Metallic Festival and held in the wake of Performa's 2006 White On White Party. The Bauhaus School was once decorated entirely in metallic colors and it is the aim of the Performa sponsored Ball and resulting pop-up store to once again celebrate that, well, celebration. Just in time for the holidays too...

Simon Spurr Still Eligible For CFDA Award Despite Leaving Own Brand

>> Simon Spurr's unexpected departure from his eponymous clothing label hasn't disqualified him from winning this year's CFDA Award for menswear, but it might make it slightly more difficult for him to take it home.

CFDA executive director Steven Kolb told WWD that "it’s the individual, not the company, that is nominated," which means Spurr could still beat out fellow nominees Billy Reid and Patrik Ervell. Spurr left his post as creative director of his company without explanation on Saturday, just two days after being nominated for the award. Kolb noted that Spurr's exit might change the way voters see Spurr, adding that he hopes they "vote on that body of work."

Simon Spurr executives Judd Nyes - who started the company in 2006 - and CFO Jenny Villareal had no comment on the matter, but it's understood that they want to keep the company's doors open without Spurr.

>> With a list of nominees that includes The Row's Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen and Proenza Schouler's Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez - not to mention a list of honorees that includes Rei Kawakubo and Johnny Depp - this year's CFDA Awards promise to be extra-exciting. At Wednesday evening's announcement event - held at Diane von Furstenberg's studio and attended by Phillip Lim, Joe Zee, and Rachel Roy - the anticipation was nearly palpable.

"Winning a CFDA Fashion Award is the highest and one of the most coveted honors one can receive in our industry," CEO Steven Kolb said as he announced the nominees and honorees. >> The ten nominees for the 2010 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award have just been announced; the winner, who is awarded $200,000 and a yearlong mentorship, will be determined in November, as will two runners-up, who receive $50,000 each. For the last few years, the winner and runners-up have also worked with Gap as part of a limited-edition Gap Design Edition collaboration to help their labels more exposure.

2010 CFDA Award Nominees Announced

>> At the CFDA meeting earlier today, the board voted overwhelmingly to re-elect Diane von Furstenberg for a third, two-year term as president of the organization. Von Furstenberg, whose term would have originally come to an end after this year, will now serve until Dec. 31, 2012: “[The board] unanimously asked me to stay another two years and I said yes. I am happy that they love me and I love them. There is so much more to do and we’re doing it.”

And this evening, von Furstenberg held a cocktail gathering for the 2010 CFDA Award nominations announcements at her studio. She noted that the awards ceremony on June 7 at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall will host a special tribute for Alexander McQueen, and the Popular Vote category, which is open to public voting and which Ralph Lauren won last year, will be back again this year, with voting starting April 1.
