Oscar de la Renta Resort 2013

Whimsy was the word at Oscar de la Renta's Resort 2013 show Monday evening, where the designer presented a diverse collection underpinned at all points by an easy, colorful elegance.

Looks ranged from de la Renta's customarily luxurious suits to shirts, jackets, and dresses featuring fresh new floral prints. Close-up images of irises and carnations played well with embroidered tulips. Many accessories were rendered in shades of ripe produce: lemon-colored belts, for example, and green apple earrings were the finishing touches on a few looks. And if the multiple suggestions of floral beauty weren't a sufficient indicator that these clothes are intended for a relaxing break from everyday life, tulle and organza dresses embroidered with a gingham pattern playfully suggested going for a picnic.

The offering was grown-up and girlish, mature and youthful all at once. That idea couldn't be stressed any clearer than in a sequined baseball shirt (already for sale online), paired with a tea-length white-and-green skirt that came down the runway toward the end of the show.

Oscar de la Renta Bridal Spring 2013

>> Oscar de la Renta started and ended his Spring 2013 bridal show with striking red dresses, but the looks that came between them hewed to traditional shades of white.

Whether starting and ending with a flash of fire was a way to awaken the audience's senses or an appeal to a different customer wasn't clear - the white dresses that made up the bulk of the show were just as powerful. They were by turns festooned with jeweled accents, draped simply, and covered with intricate lace overlays. Like his ready-to-wear collections, de la Renta's bridal gowns spoke to a wide variety of modern women - and to modern little girls, too. Several of the dresses came down the aisle preceded by flower girls wearing younger versions of the grown-up gowns.

Oscar de la Renta Fall 2012

>> "I used a lot of colors you would not associate with Winter colors, but today's woman doesn't dress for seasons," Oscar de la Renta explained of the icy blues and pale pinks that populated his Fall 2012 collection. On full-skirted ballerina dresses, bouclé coats, and voluminous ball gowns, the pastel hues were everywhere - and a welcome reprieve from the plethora of "oxblood" on offer nearly everywhere else this week.

Other than pastels, de la Renta's main focus this season was embellishment - and it came in every shape, style, and form. Glittering stones were worked onto the sleeves of cashmere cardigans, fox fur dripped from the hems of pants, and shimmering lace adorned collars. Even the models' headbands, belts, and shoes were done up in an eye-popping assortment of jewels.

Loulou de la Falaise, Yves Saint Laurent Muse and Collaborator, Has Passed Away; A Visual Tribute

>> Loulou de Falaise, who collaborated with and inspired Yves Saint Laurent for over three decades, died Saturday at her country house in Boury-en-Vexin, northwest of Paris. She was 63.

The Pierre Berge-Yves Saint Laurent Foundation announced her passing, citing an unspecified "long illness" as the cause of death. WWD's sources report that de la Falaise was diagnosed with cancer last June but wanted to keep her health a private matter. She is survived by her husband, Thadee Klossowski - who she married in 1977 in a Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche turban and harem pants - and their daughter, Anna.

De la Falaise met Saint Laurent at 1968, when she was 21, at a tea party given by the designer Fernando Sanchez. She began working for YSL in 1972, designing jewelry and hats for his couture and ready-to-wear collections and producing up to 2,000 pieces of jewelry a year until 2002, when he retired. Later, she collaborated with Oscar de la Renta on his jewelry collections. Her final designs - a line of costume jewelry she created over the Summer - go on sale next month in the shop at the Majorelle Garden in Marrakech.

Andre Leon Talley Gets a Museum Gallery of His Own, Wants It Perfumed

>> Savannah College of Art and Design, of which Andre Leon Talley is a board member, will as of Saturday have an Andre Leon Talley Gallery in its new museum of art.

Talley has been helping the museum build a costume collection out of his own archives and donations from friends. The first exhibit will include the black gown Penelope Cruz wore to the most recent Costume Institute Gala, sent by Oscar de la Renta; a black sequined wrap dress, sent by Diane von Furstenberg; a Fall 2007 Prada coat trimmed with plastic fringe and feathers; a column dress trimmed with natural string from Tom Ford's debut womenswear show; and the blue satin Manolo Blahniks featured in the Sex and the City movie.

"The only thing I haven't thrust upon them yet is that I want fragrance wafting through the ventilation system," Talley said. "Either Oscar de la Renta's Live in Love, or Diane von Furstenberg's Diane."

It sounds like he might get his wish. Paula Wallace, president and a founder of the college, said of the perfume idea: "He has not mentioned that to me, but if Andre wants it, he gets it. The multisensory concept is so important. We learn, we feel, we think, we smell. Actually, I think it's a grand idea."
