Opening Ceremony to Start Fashion and Culture Magazine

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim are reportedly launching a magazine this Summer.

The new glossy, called OC Annual, is billed as a "collectible fashion and culture magazine" and will be published once a year. Each issue will focus on a theme; the debut issue, due out in August, will center on the Olympic Games in London, where Opening Ceremony plans to open a store later this year. So far, they've recruited Bruce Weber, Walter Pfeiffer, Todd Cole, and Tim Barber to take pictures for the magazine.

Neither Leon nor Lim has spoken publicly about the magazine, but in an internal memo obtained by WWD, Lim wrote that the goal is to create a magazine that has a broad appeal.

"As magazine fanatics, O.C. founder Humberto Leon and myself are aiming to create a collectible publication for a new generation, something beautiful and special in the vein of Benetton's Colors, Comme des Garçons' Six and Joe McKenna's Joe," Lim wrote. "We want to make a magazine that will appeal to kids in Nebraska as much as industry people."

In addition to running Opening Ceremony outposts in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo, Leon and Lim also design the Opening Ceremony label, as well as the Paris-based line Kenzo. The duo is also working on a book celebrating Opening Ceremony's 10th anniversary. The book will be published by Rizzoli in September.

Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa landed his first modeling assignment with the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Costa will star in a campaign advertising the organization's new "São Paolo for the Cure!" t-shirts, set to debut tomorrow in his native Brazil. He's joined in the campaign by fellow Brazilians Luciana Casta and Raquel Zimmermann. [Daily Front Row]
Natalia Vodianova took flak for saying "It's better to be skinny than to be fat" at this past weekend's Vogue festival, and today she responded to the criticism on her Facebook page, explaining that her original comment was designed to make people laugh. Opening Ceremony will open its first London store - a pop-up shop - to celebrate the start of the 2012 Olympic games this July. When the games are over, the store will move to a permanent spot on King Street in the Covent Garden neighborhood. The Food and Drug Administration will start monitoring what goes into beauty products sold in the United States by creating a mandatory ingredient registry next year. Current law allows beauty companies to report their ingredients voluntarily, and there are only 10 ingredients that are banned from domestic products. Richemont, owner of luxury jewelers and watchmakers like Cartier and IWC, won a momentous infringement case against a company that registered the trademark for Vacheron Constantin - Richemont's oldest watch brand - in Russia and sold clothes under that label. The outcome of the case means that a well-known trademark in one country can't be taken and reregistered in another country, because it can confuse consumers and harm the original trademark holder's reputation. They're paired with lots of textures, like knitwear pieces that range from nubbly to open weave, fur, leather, and tweed. But perhaps most interesting of all is a quilted Winter coat, which is sure to keep whoever wears it warm by the time Fall's first cold fronts come around.

Someone was sufficiently disgruntled with designer Alexander Wang to throw eggs against every one of the windows of his flagship store in New York's SoHo neighborhood. We haven't heard whether or not the vandalism is connected to his labor lawsuits, but store employees' first task this morning was cleaning up the yolky mess. [The Cut]
Have you been dying to know when Zac Posen would finally start making sunglasses? Posen has inked a collaboration with eyewear manufacturer Illestva for a limited-edition line of shades that will be available next month at Opening Ceremony, Collete and Illestva.com. All of the shades will sell for $300, and Posen is excited to enter a new category. “As we develop the Zac Posen brand, sunglasses allow me to maintain an aspect of flare and attitude for clothing that transitions into day," he said. Opening Ceremony's Humberto Leon and Carol Lim Named New Kenzo Creative Directors

>> LVMH has appointed Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, the 36-year-old co-founders of Opening Ceremony, as creative directors of Kenzo, effective immediately. They replace Antonio Marras, who joined Kenzo in 2004, and will show their first Kenzo collection in October for Spring 2012.

Under Leon and Lim, Kenzo is to be repositioned in the contemporary sector, with prices expected to range from 200 euros to 1,500 euros ($285 to $2,135).

"It’s great to bring this young, contemporary generation into Kenzo,” said Pierre-Yves Roussel, chairman and CEO of LVMH’s fashion division. “They’re really embracing what was the origin of Kenzo - that Jungle spirit.” Roussel interviewed a wide range of both young and experienced designers for the position, he said, but was struck by the “360-degree vision of the fashion industry” Leon and Lim have. He added that Marras had been “respectful of the heritage of the brand . . . What we need now is something which has more energy, which is looking forward in terms of addressing a new generation.”

While the pair are not trained as designers, they expect to “build an exciting team” of designers to realize their vision for Kenzo. Leon said that while he sketches ideas, “we’ve always worked in a team community.”

They plan to continue with Opening Ceremony, and split their time between Paris and New York.
