The Last Two POP Covers for Dasha Zhukova's First Issue, Plus More Inside Details

POP's Got a New Editor-in-Chief: Dasha Zhukova

>> POP has a new editor-in-chief to replace Katie Grand - as rumored, it's 27-year-old Dasha Zhukova, who has no previous editorial experience but is well-known in the fashion and art worlds as designer of Kova & T and founder of Moscow's largest exhibition venue, the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture.

Ashley Heath, who originally conceived and co-launched POP with Katie Grand in 1999-2000, will serve as editorial director, helping Dasha with the reinvention of the magazine, the launch of a new website, a new London office - Katie Grand complained about the old POP offices regularly - as well as fostering an installation space in Berlin and a partnership with The Saatchi Gallery in London.

The magazine - first issue launches Sept. 1 - appears set to be more focused on art in addition to fashion than it was under Katie Grand's direction - according to Zhukova's statement: "We are working hard on a complete revamp of the magazine in order to provide a broader point of view focusing also on art, contemporary culture and the globalisation of all things pop-related."

Apparently "names of old-school editors, creative directors, and even pop stars and fashion designers were thrown around" before Dasha was settled upon, but now the focus is on recruiting a freelance team, which Ashley and Dasha interviewed together. No word on whether Dasha's best friend Olympia Scarry will serve as creative director as rumored, but an editorial board is already in place to provide guidance and inspiration, including Daphne Guinness; art director Julia Restoin-Roitfeld; artist and film director Sam Taylor-Wood; design critic Alice Rawsthorn; artist and art director Peter Saville; Rebecca Wilson, head of development at Saatchi Gallery; and David Davies, managing director of POP.

Not Just Another Party for Another Magazine

>> Before jetting off to Milan, London fashion's finest gathered for a dinner last night at the Double Club, in honor of Another Magazine's newest issue featuring Tilda Swinton. Kate Moss, freshly returned from a safari in South Africa, made her first and only London Fashion Week appearance, dropping in with Jamie Hince for Jefferson Hack's Congolese family-style dinner. Lily Cole, who sat front row at Vivienne Westwood Red Label earlier this week and then walked in the Qasimi show before heading back to Cambridge, popped back into town for the party, where Peaches performed her Karoake favorites while Kate, Tilda Swinton, and Daphne Guiness all sang along.

Venice Biennale Overflowing with Fashion Figures and Their Families

>> Where art goes, fashion is soon to follow, and with the contemporary arts Biennale going on in Venice right now, there are plenty of designers, editors, and even models in town. On Wednesday, Olympia Scarry’s installation brought out Patrick Demarchelier, Vogue Russia's Aliona Doletskaya, and POP's Dasha Zhukova, as well as Justin Portman and Natalia Vodianova, the latter whose face was reflected in a luminated, aged sketch on display called Dorian Gray, by artist Dasha Fursey.

Naomi Campbell and boyfriend Vladislav Doronin stopped by a lunch for the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, and popped up again yesterday at the opening of Francois Pinault's new museum, the Punta della Dogana. Stella McCartney was there with husband Alasdhair Willis to support her financier in his new endeavor, as were Franca Sozzani and Marc Jacobs, always the fan of contemporary art, who apparently kept exclaiming, "This place rocks."

Meanwhile, down the river, Angela Missoni held her annual party on boyfriend Bruno Ragazzi's yacht. It was quite the family and friends affair: Angela's daughters Margherita and Teresa, plus son Francesco were all mingling, Franca Sozzani brought son Francesco Carrozzini, and Vladimir Restoin-Roitfeld arrived with Carine Roitfeld, who neglected to follow the rest in taking her lace-up shoes off: "It would just take too long to undo them." Bee Shaffer was sans Anna Wintour, but Jefferson Hack brought fiancee Anouck Lepere.

Even those who aren't in Venice in person are there in spirit - Mario Testino sent one of his art consultants to scout the exhibition.

Double (or Triple) Duty Presentations

Gareth Pugh confirmed that he will be showing a video directed by Ruth Hogben on Sept. 13 to "set the mood for [his] catwalk show that will take place as usual in Paris." After the private showing, he'll screen the short film in public nearby - get your name on the guest list via MAC's Facebook page. [Style File]
Temperley London is taking their interactive Spring 2010 multimedia presentation on the road for the second time, starting in New York Sept. 15 before evolving in format for London Fashion Week and then again in Paris, where it will become an exhibit. The film aspect, plus stills and a behind-the-scenes cut will be readily available online on Temperley's new website.

Dasha Zhukova on POP: "It’s Not Like This Is the First Time There’s Been a New Editor at a Magazine"

>> Dasha Zhukova's appointment as editor of POP in February came as a surprise to many; it also came with a bit of drama, partly because she was taking over a magazine so aligned with Katie Grand's name, and partly because, to many, she didn't have much editorial experience. As the reveal date for the first issue under her helm approaches - Sept. 1 - Dasha, who is rumored to have recently parted with beau Roman Abramovich, sets the record straight in the August 2009 issue of Interview. In fact, she says, "I feel like anything I’ve ever done, I’ve been strongly advised not to do."

She's not trying to ride in on Katie Grand's coattails.

I respect Katie Grand, and I hope I can retain some respect for the brand. But I have other plans for the magazine now. And, come on, it’s not like this is the first time there’s been a new editor at a magazine.

Actually, she was opposed to taking the job at first.

My initial reaction was, “No way. I don’t want this.”

Dasha Zhukova's POP Appointment Has Become a Fashion Taboo

>> It's no surprise that Dasha Zhukova's recent appointment as POP editor-in-chief is making waves - she has no editorial experience and is seen by many as just the socialite girlfriend of a Russian billionaire. Plus, there's that whole matter of her taking over from Katie Grand - apparently a number of other potential candidates were reluctant to head up a magazine so imbued with Grand's identity.

Dasha, who has been attending some shows in Milan, feels "like the elephant in the room." And rightly so - Derek Blasberg reports that one British fashion journalist snidely commented to him, “I’m going to be the next queen of England,” while another joked that Kylie Minogue was in line to be the next editor of Vogue. Apparently, Anna Dello Russo pinched Dasha's seat at Jil Sander, the same day that her new POP position was announced.

Christophe Decarnin: The Shy Guy Behind Balmain's Success

>> He's the man who brings you $1,500 Balmain cotton t-shirts - and those are the cheapest; They go up to $3,000 if you want sparkles. Balmain is the word on everyone's lips - buyers, fans of fringed boots - and the fervor is reaching a fever pitch.

Christophe Decarnin came out of nowhere to head the house in 2005, and with every collection he does for Balmain, sales have doubled. Cathy Horyn does a profile of the "colorless and shy" designer in the Women's Winter Fashion issue of T Magazine, examining why Balmain has been so successful in such a short time, especially when Decarnin took over the ailing house from "the fiasco of its last designer, Laurent Mercier, who liked to dress up as Jayne Mansfield and have people call him Lola." So who and what does Decarnin, with his "French permagloom, his pale arms crossed over his white T-shirt, his black hair in greasy strands," and his "short, pathetic answers" have to thank for all the success?

"Balmain has become the label of the supercool girls . . . the girls in London and Paris who work as assistants at fashion magazines, design studios and P.R. firms, or who have some terrific family-tree connections they swing from. They’re 21 or 22 years old. Anyway, they’re crazy about clothes. Julia Restoin Roitfeld, whose mother is Carine Roitfeld, the editor of French Vogue, wears Balmain. So does Eugenia Niarchos, Olympia Scarry, Gaia Repossi, Dasha Zhukova and Charlotte Casiraghi, a daughter of Princess Caroline."
