Balmain Turns to Military Sauvage for Spring 2010

>> With Laduree macaroons catered backstage and Rihanna arriving half an hour late to sit front row, Daria Werbowy opened (and closed, and walked in the middle of) the Balmain show - her only show for the season - in the gilded, marbled ballroom of The Grand Hotel.

Christophe Decarnin's strong shoulders and ripped jeans were still present, but gone were the '80s. This season, “it’s warrior women and the military, with a mix of different times and a touch of Mad Max," he told Suzy Menkes; stylist Emmanuelle Alt's personal style was prevalent as ever, particularly in the pants-and-jackets combinations.

Since Decarnin took over at Balmain in 2006, the brand's ready-to-wear sales have double each season, according to CEO Alain Hivelin, and next season brings an eyewear collection with Oliver Peoples. The brand's much-buzzed-about $2,000 jeans are priced as such because, Hivelin says, certain pieces receive hundreds of hours of embroidery or have been reworked up to 50 times before they hit retail. But here's irony for you: Decarnin picks up his own wardrobe at army surplus stores.

New York Fashion Week Street Style: Karolina Kurkova

Karoline Kurkova showed up at a number of shows this New York Fashion Week - Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, and Oscar de la Renta among them. She told Modelinia: “After having the baby I’m a new person and I feel like I’m starting again as a new person. It’s the rebirth of me and an evolution of me. It just kind of all happened at once and everybody was excited for me to do shows, so I kind of instead of doing one, I could do just one exclusive or one or two. But I decided, ‘Let me just go with it.’”

Kurkova, captured in her downtime between shows, gave her take on the color for Fall, camel, with a slouchy ribbed sweater, asymmetric skirt, and toffee-colored oxfords. Emulate her chic look by pairing this BCBG Max Azria sweater, seen above, with a draped skirt by Vivienne Westwood Anglomania. Finish off with oxfords, dark sunnies, and a black satchel.

>> Balmain Clarifies Lower-Priced Label Talk, Launches Sunglasses -Last week, WWD reported that Balmain was planning to “test” Blue Label, an apparel collection for fall licensed to Balness, a French producer, and priced about 40 to 50 percent less than the runway collection. Today, a spokesperson for the label addresses the reports: "There is no Balmain lower priced line. What I think you might be referring to is a capsule collection that was prepared for some Parisian retailers. Christophe Decarnin wasn't involved in that project. The brand has decided to not repeat the experience, preferring to concentrate all its efforts on the mainline." Alexander Wang Evolves With Sportswear-Centric Spring 2010 Collection

>> Alexander Wang hinted recently that he was ready to evolve, telling W's September 2009 issue: "As soon as people get used to what you’re doing, you have to change direction." And evolve he did for Spring 2010: the look of his last few collections, with their body-clinging shapes and primarily black palettes, was replaced by a generally looser silhouette and all shades of khaki, tan, olive, and gray. He told WWD that Spring 2010 for him "is very much about classic American sportswear," and the idea is visible in pieces like a sweatshirt dress with football pad detailing (below) and all the shinguard-like socks cut out at the back of the calf.

But Wang didn't give up the sexy side of his label - there were plenty of bra tops, crop tops, and and lingerie-style shorts to go around. The house was unsurprisingly packed, with Katie Grand (Wang's after-party co-host), Terry Richardson, Olivier Zahm, Diane von Furstenberg (Alex's CFDA-appointed mentor), Erin Wasson, Devon Aoki, Liya Kebede, and Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin all front row. Frankie Rayder, Angela Lindvall, and Iselin Steiro walked, newcomer Mirte Maas opened, Karl Templer styled, and Wang's three styles of sunglasses debuted.

Theyskens's Successor at Nina Ricci To Be Named Soon

>> Nina Ricci is currently in a state of transition - Olivier Theyskens officially left the house earlier this month, and although Peter Copping's name has been thrown around as the replacement of choice, nothing has been made official. Apparently several staffers, including PR director Kate Etter, also left the brand with Theyskens.

Today, Mario Grauso, president of Ricci owner Puig, verified that there are "no plans [for] a hiatus at Ricci," adding that the company "will announce a new designer within the next few weeks." According to Fashion Week Daily, a well-placed industry insider is "99% sure" that Copping will be tapped, but Grauso would not confirm anything, and when prodded about a possible Copping appearance at the Costume Institute Gala, replied, "I have not yet invited people for the Met."

As for Oliver's legacy, those towering shoes he created for Fall 2009 will not be going into production - no surprise, but still, a comment on the ever-present misalignment between the brand and its former designer.
