Nylon Going Digital: Eco-Friendly Or....?

As a non-subscriber to Nylon (no offense!) imagine our surprise when we received notice that "our April issue of Nylon Magazine" would be sent us digitally. Confusion, so much confusion. It appears as though Nylon is moving their subscribers over to online format but if they contest (by calling customer service) they will be switched back to a hard copy subscription. Nylon, who just celebrated their 10th anniversary and launched a Mexico version of the magazine, is now offering online subscriptions for $4.95 per year in contrast to a hard copy subscription which costs a whopping $19.95 per year. Sounds like a fine plan to us but talk about coming out of left field...

Coutorture Community Must Reads 11/21/08

We can hardly believe it's Friday already, given how productive our Network Partners have been...check out our picks from the Network this afternoon.

Chic & Untroubled gave her two cents on the Peaches Geldof for Nylon postings. That girl is far too young to be dying her hair.

Debutante Clothing reported on Yoox's newest e-commerce endeavor. Costume jewelry and curation details ensue...

There's a Rebecca Minkoff sample sale this weekend? Eye 4 Style is hitting the sale postings head on (whilst we bury our heads in denial).

The Bread And Butter put together a visually stimulating and enticing literary wish list that us feeling guilty that 90% of the things on our holiday list involve sequins.

Harper's Bazaar Stoops Low For an Advertising Pick-Me-Up

>> Depending on where you're standing, Harper's Bazaar has either reached a new high or a new low. As reported yesterday by The New York Times, the Hearst-owned magazine forked over 40, yes 40, editorial pages, plus the cover of its July 2008 issue, to advertiser Estee Lauder. The cosmetic company is keen to sell the socks off of its new perfume, Sensuous, and is using its four stable girls, Gwyneth Paltrow, Carolyn Murphy, Elizabeth Hurley, and Hilary Rhoda to give it their all.

Desperate economic times call for desperate measures, it seems, but Allan Mottus, a beauty industry analyst, said it best: "Boy, they really sold out — Hearst — didn’t they?"

It's no secret that advertisers and magazines have long been in cahoots — Nylon collaborated in a similar way with Chloe earlier this year, placing the faces of the brand's new fragrance on their "Beauty Issue" cover, with an accompanying editorial inside. Some seem to think Glenda Bailey and Hearst have taken it too far this time, but before getting in a huff about this specific incident, realize: Hearst has been pulling these shenanigans for years now. Also, just by talking about it, we're giving Estee Lauder all the press they aimed for . . .

*image: source

>> After a recent trek to the Himalayas, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez were inspired to model tweed jackets after mountaineering parkas, fashion button-downs out of windbreaker nylon, and give coats and dresses quilting like sleeping bags. Thus, the Proenza Schouler Pre-Fall 2012 collection - which also finishes up with a round of bustier dresses and skirts in a silk jacquard pulled from a Google Earth aerial view of mountains.

et tu, nylon?

>> Maybe I'm the only one who has noticed this, but I thought I would give it a try anyway... I've been a big Nylon fan for a long time running now (we're talking years). I used to read it cover to cover -- many many hours were spent perusing the pages. Now, I just skim -- don't get me wrong, there's definitely still some good stuff. But I'm just not inclined to read it all anymore. Maybe it's my age difference... or maybe not.

But since we're on Nylon, the latest cover girl for May 2006 is Mischa Barton, and for June 2006 it's reportedly Ashley Olsen (with lots and lots of Cartier). This is one change I have noticed -- maybe it's not permanent (it's just been the past couple of months), but I kind of liked it better when the cover girls were people like French actress Ludivine Sagnier (loved her in Swimming Pool!) and the lesser knowns, not Hollywood it girls. So Nylon, if you're reading, keep going with the offbeat -- that's why I love you.

Prabal Gurung Spring 2012

>> In a similar vein to his Fall collection, Prabal Gurung played with subverting the ladylike credo. This time, he looked to the fetishistic work of Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki for his digitized floral prints and tapped Zana Bayne to incorporate leather harnesses into his intricately-pieced mesh panel dresses. “I wanted to take the old fetish, like nylon and PVC and everything, and treat it in a more precious way,” Gurung explained.

The effort was duly noted: Elle's Robbie Myers said on the way out that it set the bar for the week, and Emanuel Ungaro's chief Jeffry Aronsson was also in attendance, checking Gurung's talent out for his consulting business, apparently.

Organic by John Patrick Spring 2012

>> "An ode to the explorer" is how John Patrick described his khaki-filled Spring 2012 collection, which featured a mullet-hemmed olive "parachuter" dress, and olive drawstring pants, also in parachute fabric. But at the same time, Patrick noted, the goal was to go "very classic" because he's "trend-averse" - hence key pieces like a classic white button-down or a wide-leg, to-the-floor-long pant, added to the offering. Patrick also introduced his inaugural set of handbags - rucksacks from recycled Japanese nylon; cross-body satchels and pouches from vegetable-tanned leather; and an oversized silk tote - the SLC, named for the show's stylist Stephanie LaCava - cut from necktie fabric. That same printed fabric also shows up on a bevy of shorts: in red, gold, and olive.

Style.com to Launch Magazine in October, Test E-Commerce

>> After much speculation, Style.com has confirmed it will launch its first print magazine on Oct. 31, just a few weeks after the Spring 2012 shows finish. The first issue is "going to be very much focused on Spring/Summer 2012 collections," according to Style.com editor-in-chief Dirk Standen. "We are going to spotlight the most interesting people, places and clothes of the season, but beyond that we are hoping to convey to the reader what the experience of going through that intense four week cycle is like ... Starting today I will be using our Twitter feed to let our readers know what we’re up to as we shoot the photo shoots, meet the designers and models, and rush to put together the first issue."

The magazine's editorial staff - in addition to Standen - centers around Style.com executive editor Nicole Phelps and contributing editor Tim Blanks, while the creative team includes Fairchild Fashion Media editorial director Peter Kaplan and Style.com magazine creative director Lina Kutsovskaya, formerly of Nylon and Teen Vogue.

As for the reason why Style.com is moving into print? Standen explains: "If you look at the big picture I don’t think [media] brands can afford to be tied to one medium anymore. Obviously you see that with magazines paying a lot of attention to their websites now. But even on the web, it’s not enough to just have a website. You have to be on various digital devices. You need to be on the various social media sites. You want your content to be available in as many places as possible. Now that we are within the Fairchild umbrella, which has a lot of experience and a great deal of expertise in publishing, it became a natural extension for Style.com to do a magazine."

The website is also testing e-commerce, concurrent with the magazine launch, Standen says: "We are working with six New York City designers to be announced during fashion week. They are going to make a very limited number of pieces available directly from their Spring [2012] collection, so that people will be able to buy them right away. We are going to coordinate it with the launch of the magazine so, technically end of October. They will be able to buy it and will receive a nice package in the mail within days."

The Style.com magazine is currently available for pre-order and will be available on newsstands in select cities across North America and in Europe.

Alexander Wang Resort 2012

>> For Resort 2012, Alexander Wang was inspired by "the idea of speed and things that felt fast, like competitive swimming and cycling." The athletic references are easy to spot; the collection features shiny, over-sized windbreakers, mesh racing-style vests, and a plethora of primary colors. In keeping with the sporty theme, Resort 2012 also marks the debut of swimwear and sneakers for Wang. The new pieces are exactly what one would expect from Wang: streamlined with sexy details. The swimsuits are tank-style with cut-outs, while the sneakers - available in three colors - feature patches of textured skins, gleaming nylon and a vaguely '70s silhouette.
