House of Harlow Launches Handbags for Fall 2011

>> Nicole Richie is adding handbags to her House of Harlow 1960 collection. Priced from $150 to $625, the new offering features clutches, hobos, and cross-body bags in a mix of materials like calfskin or vintage leather with detailing such as studs or fringe. "The collection is quite small in terms of the styles we are launching with. I wanted to make sure that each piece is special," Richie explained of the 14-piece selection. "Handbags have always been a part of the equation since we first launched the House of Harlow 1960 brand. We just needed to make sure all of the components were aligned before setting foot into that category." The pieces will be available starting mid-July at Bergdorf Goodman, Shopbop, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus. Some are also currently available for pre-order at Singer22.

>> The Costume Institute Gala is a week away and Alexander McQueen is reportedly finishing up dress fittings on a number of women today. Usually, there are no previews of the dresses to be worn until they hit the event's red carpet, but this year is an exception.

Prabal Gurung worked with Elettra Wiedemann Rossellini to rework one of her grandmother Ingrid Bergman's dresses, made by postwar Roman couturiere Fernanda Gattinoni. Originally, the gown was floorlength ruched ivory chiffon with bands of rhinestone and sequined embroidery running down each side, but Gurung reoriented the embroidery and shortened the dress in the back, leaving the original dresses chiffon back panels in place (left). Wiedemann explained that they aimed to “maintain the integrity of the dress but also make it mine and his. I felt it was important to pay homage to my grandmother but put my own stamp on it. It’s still the same dress, but it feels a little bit sexier, more contemporary, and younger.” A picture of the original can be seen here.

In other Met Ball news, meanwhile, Nicole Richie is in New York this week doing fittings on the gown she designed for Britt Maren to wear. “It’s pretty major,” Richie said.

I am not sure that I agree that the American heiress has ever gone out of style or will ever go out of style. I think she’s a classic. Actresses really do go in and out individually and it seems so flash in the pan. Actresses are creations of stylists, of studios, of movies; the clothes that they wear have nothing to do with where they come from. But the social girls have unbelievable style and taste, and that taste is always interesting to other women. If you take Nicole Richie, I don’t think she has intrinsic style. I think she puts on loads of beautiful clothes and she looks fine. But I think Marina Rust has an impeccable taste, style, history, glamour, which Nicole Richie will never have. It’s the genuineness that people respond to I think.

I'm not sure I agree with her about all the socialites -- part of her job for Vogue is to cover the society set, after all. In fact, she's one of the society set herself, so she's probably just slightly biased. But as to the part about Nicole Richie: Amen, sister! I guess that's why Nicole Richie hasn't made to cover of Vogue yet...

Harper Bazaar's July 2009 Cover Caught Up in Tabloid-Comparison Controversy

The newstand cover features a paparazzi picture of Angelina Jolie, from a red carpet last December, pulled from a photo service, and there is no interview with the actress inside. The subscriber's cover, on the other hand, is a portrait of Doutzen Kroes taken by Terry Richardson, with an accompanying editorial inside.

Glenda Bailey writes in her editor's letter: "For a magazine, the best accessory is a beautiful woman on the cover. This month, we have two." Her readers seem to disagree - the Angelina cover has caused an uproar. As Fashionista puts it: "Bazaar is meant to be one of our venerable American fashion magazines. And this reeks of tabloids more than fashion." A chorus of comparisons to Grazia, InTouch Weekly, and US Weekly from various fashion outlets chime in.
