Nicholas K Goes Urban Nomad For Fall 2010

More is more for Nicholas Kunz this season. Oversized tee shirts, gauzy scarves, drop crotch trousers, vegetable-dyed leather jackets, and grunge-influenced plaid dresses give her urban warriors a disheveled, nomadic look for fall. Abstract prints and sun-bleached solids are paired with coal-rimmed eyes and cuffed ankle boots for her, while he's decked in fur-trimmed hoodies, boxing robes, and combat boots. Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Still Necessary, Just with Less of Everything

>> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether - the attention is too valuable. "You kill a thousand birds with one stone, because you get that many people there in an hour and you're getting one message across to them," says Scott Sternberg of Boy and Band of Outsiders. "They're writers and photographers and culturally indulgent people with loud mouths."

Instead, designers are saving by hosting presentations instead of runway shows (Monique Lhuillier, Temperley London, and Carmen Marc Valvo), inviting fewer guests (Marc Jacobs and DKNY, who's slicing her usual 1,000 down to 400), sending email invites instead of by mail (nearly everyone), or showing fewer looks to save on fabric and sample-making costs.

the long and the short of it is...

My three favorite long cardigans: the high-end option, a wool Sonia by Sonia Rykiel cardigan in a great bright bluey-purple (or blurple, if you enjoy saying that as much as I do). The budget-friendly option, a cozy grey Stella McCartney/ Chloe-inspired cardigan that is probably more practical for spring with its short sleeves and non-wool fabric. Or you can always be a Goldilocks, go with somewhere in between high and low, because you want the price just right: the Nicholas K cardigan in a beautiful blush color, long and drapey in the front, short in the back, and with a lapel that kind of reminds me of bamboo with its horizontal straps.
