>> Anna Wintour joined New York as fashion editor in 1981 and was there through 1983, when she left to become creative director at Vogue. A handful of the spreads she produced while at New York have turned up, and many show the seeds of Vogue's future. In one, there's a photograph of a model at a grocery, a concept that Wintour has used at Vogue since; another called "Fur For All Seasons," is staunchly pro-fur - there's even a tiny credit: "None of the furs shown is on the endangered species list. Still another is photographed by Peter Lindbergh, who Wintour has employed often for Vogue.

Fashion In 50 Seconds 06/01/09 Williamson Returns To LFW & More

Matthew Williamson will not show in New York this Spring 2010, but in London for its 25th anniversary.

The Fall 2009 Christian Dior Couture show will be staged at the first Christian Dior store in Paris.

Christian Lacroix wrote a letter to the firm's 125 employees, saying that he will give "200 percent" to keep the couture house alive.

New York's cover story this week is entitled "Si Newhouse's Dream Factory" and discusses the fate of Condé Nast.

Fashion In 50 Seconds 01/08/09 New York Look Put On Hold & More

New York Look, the biannual magazine put out by New York magazine which covers the two major fashion seasons, has been put on hold--at least for this season. New York magazine told WWD they will consider publishing the magazine again next Fall, but nothing is certain.

Zappos is selling a $50,000 t-shirt that will give the customer free reign to block one person from shopping on the website--for life. We're waiting for the t-shirt to show up on Canal Street.

Topshop's Spring look book has started to circulate and fans are revisiting the Spring preview in anticipation for a New York store opening. The Soho store was meant to open in October of 2008 but the date has been pushed back to March of this year--at least for now.

Badgley Mischka has announced that they will lower the prices of their Fall 09 collection. We're wondering if this means lower quality fabrics, or less complicated garments from the brand. Check out the Spring 09 collection right here.

Andre Leon Talley's Milan Mishap

>> Milan is not good to Andre Leon Talley. Two years ago, his luggage was lost for three days during Milan Fashion Week, and he was stuck wearing the same blue Patent Miu Miu coat and velour track pants to the shows. Fast forward to today, and it's the same deal with Milan Fashion Week. His luggage was lost, and he had to wear the same Juicy Couture shorts and gray Ralph Lauren polo shirt to D&G this morning that he wore on the plane.

But ALT isn't the only one having issues with Milan: A Continental flight out of Newark filled with a bevy of editors - Vogue’s fashion market and accessories director Virginia Smith and senior accessories editor Filipa Fino, W’s fashion director Alex White, and New York magazine’s fashion director Harriet Mays Powell - experienced engine failure and was rerouted to Maine last night. They all made it safely back to Newark, but most are still looking for a new flight to Milan . . .

Robbie Myers Says Everything Is Hunky-Dory at Elle

>> This week's New York Magazine profile exploring the inner workings of Elle has editor-in-chief Roberta Myers less than pleased.

The article, written by former Jezebel editor and current Gawker employee Maureen "Moe" Tkacik, tends to portray current Elle employees like Myers, international creative director Gilles Bensimon, creative director Joe Zee, and fashion news director Anne Slowey in a less positive light than former fashion director Nina Garcia. At one point, Tkacik writes that Myers had a "lack of jurisdiction over the fashion department," and at another point she reports on the power struggle between Gilles Bensimon and Myers:

Bensimon wanted little to do with [Myers]. In photos from the rare occasions they would attend shows together, his expression is dour. He saw Myers as ambitious, insecure and overly American; she saw him as an overpaid, out-of-control spendthrift who was losing his touch.

Nina "The Monster" Garcia and Anne "I Read to Lose Weight" Slowey Duke It Out on TV

This week's New York Magazine takes an in-depth look at the former Elle editor who has built herself into a brand and compares her with current Elle editor Anne Slowey, pitting the old guard Elle reality star against the new guard Elle reality star hopeful.

Ninotchka "Nina" Garcia learned how to deal with adversity at a very young age.

The summer after she turned 16, Ninotchka “Nina” Garcia found herself in the crossfire of a mafia shoot-out. She was eating a late dinner with her friends at a trendy restaurant in Barranquilla, Colombia . . . The bullets started and stopped so quickly she didn’t realize what was happening until she was crouched beneath the table.

“It was the Wild West back then,” she says. “Some mafioso upset at having to sit in traffic—you know, like road rage, but with guns. Or quarreling mafia families. No one dared ask.” Her voice is resigned. “You just learned to be low-key and not flashy.”

Anne Slowey, meanwhile, deals with the adversity of those ten pounds that just won't go away.

She has tried steroids, supplements, pills, a sort of detoxifying electroshock therapy she calls “Frankenbutt treatments,” and an on-again, off-again commitment to juice fasts. To motivate herself, Slowey buys her fashion-show ensembles, tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of Lanvin and Prada and Balenciaga, several sizes too small. Once, she decided to read Ulysses and practically locked herself in the house for a week, reading it in the bathtub. “I lost eight pounds,” she recalls wistfully.

Shimmer, Shimmer, Cross, Re-Cross

The pantyhose debate continues to rage in small town America and corporate human resources departments. But frankly the right to bare legs (or arms, or even sometimes, shudder, midriffs) hasn't really been a concern for fashion women. So when we started to weirdly crave shimmer nylons in the dead of summer we knew something was up. Our first inkling came as we read Tom Wolfe's eulogy of Clay Falker in the great man's own New York Magazine. Discussing a style piece on Madison Avenue art girls we found ourselves inspired. They became known as the “art birds.” As late as 1989 Japanese art collectors liked to have these pretty little American girls by their sides in the front rows for the “important” auctions at Sotheby’s and Christie’s. They loved the pretty things’ lithe young legs with their epidermi of sheerest ravage-me nylon shimmering up to the most tumescent swells of their thighs as they crossed and then re-crossed and then re-re-crossed and then re-re-re-crossed them shimmer shimmer shimmer shimmer beneath the downlighters. Now the fact that we found ourselves inspired by sheer nylons in midsummer by a man who habitually wears suits, albeit white ones, in even the warmest weather seemed fitting. But then today network partner Catwalk Queen admitted that she was a hosiery hoarder. She begins in the context of pre-fall trends and uses fellow community members Kingdom of Style and Susie Bubble as evidence. But its when she admits to loving "the new breed of truly barely-there nudes" we knew we were not alone. We have a few plans in mind for showcasing just how sexy the "shimmer, shimmer, cross re-cross" can be even in the middle of a heatwave.

Erin Fetherston on Sneaking Into Her First Fashion Show and How She Gets That Hair

Erin Fetherston's success as a designer - and her charming personal style - have made her a regular fixture on the Fashion Week scene, but she wasn't always included on guest lists. We talked with the flaxen-haired designer about her elaborate plan to sneak into her very first runway show when she was just an 18-year-old intern at a "major" fashion magazine in New York.

"It was September. A couple people from the magazine were invited to the Calvin Klein show at Milk Studios. The art department got a copy of someone else's invitation and they basically made a bootleg copy for me - but totally using their amazing art production equipment!

"I was so nervous. I was completely sneaking in, and I feel like that didn't happen that much back then. Before the digital era and before Fashion GPS I feel like it was harder, because you really needed to have that physical invite.

"I remember going to the show and hiding it [the invitation] with the envelope or folded in half. I walked right in and I remember just being amazed. Once the show was over everyone was kind of hanging out and drinking champagne and there was Shalom Harlow and Amber Valletta. It was just amazing for me."

Fetherston added that she's been showing her collection at Milk for the past few seasons, and she always sees "student crashers. I always let them come in because I was totally the same," she said.

We also asked Fetherston about her signature coif. She told us she focuses on getting haircuts that grow out well (her go-to is Edward Tricomi at Warren Tricomi) and conditioning it with Shu Uemura and Redken products to keep it healthy - but she says she doesn't want her hair to get more attention than she does.

"I've had my bangs for such a long time and I know people really associate me with them," she said, laughing. "You don't want to be defined by something like your haircut. I feel like it was starting to overshadow other things that I do in my life, which I think are more interesting."

Vogue's Olympic Cover, H&M's Apology, and Lara Stone's Love Story

America's Olympians have taken over the June issue of Vogue, with a cover featuring soccer player Hope Solo, swimmer Ryan Lochte, and tennis star Serena Williams. Lochte is the fourth man to be included on the cover of Vogue (the other three are Richard Gere, George Clooney, and LeBron James). Inside the magazine, Karlie Kloss poses alongside other athletes, like gymnast Jonathan Horton and basketball player Dwyane Wade. [Vogue]
H&M has apologized for using an image of a tan-skinned Isabeli Fontana to advertise its Summer swimsuits after a Swedish anticancer group accused the brand of promoting "a beauty ideal that is deadly." H&M said in a statement that "It was not our intention to show off a specific ideal or to encourage dangerous behaviour, but was instead to show off our latest summer collection." Lara Stone revealed how her husband, David Walliams, managed to woo her in the new issue of Vogue Netherlands: "He stalked me," she joked. Asked whether she thought their romance was sparked by love at first sight, Stone said, "To him it was!" [Vogue UK]
Manolo Blahnik has signed a deal to expand his footprint in London. Shoe retailer Kurt Geiger will open a Manolo Blahnik shop-in-store at Harrods in time to sell the accessories brand's Fall 2012 collection. Kurt Geiger opened a similar space for Blahnik at Liberty London this February. [Vogue UK]
The May issue of L'Uomo Vogue is dedicated to "Rebranding Africa." Editor Franca Sozzani said she wanted to portray African nations in a favorable light. "Presenting a positive image of the continent means focusing world attention on an area that has been hitherto excluded," she said. [Fashion Etc.]
Meanwhile, Sozzani's other magazine Vogue Italia recently shot a spread featuring reality star Kim Kardashian. [@KimKardashian]
Model Lily Kwong has big plans for after she graduates from Columbia University. Kwong, who is Joseph Altuzarra's cousin, says she will travel on behalf of her new charity Nuvana, which helps empower the youth in poor communities. [Lifestyle Mirror]
