In Sydney, Naomi Watts, Nikki Phillips, and Rachael Taylor rode the season's scuba trend in ensembles tinged with surf-sport details. In Los Angeles, Tilda Swinton hosted the Pomellato boutique opening in an ivory silk pajama look from Lanvin, while Jayma Mays, Emmy Rossum, and Jacqueline Emerson all looked Valentine-chic in coordinating red-and-white prints at an event for Lucky magazine. Emily Blunt, the Armani family, and Karolina Kurkova (who has been shedding baby weight thanks to daily workouts with Tracy Anderson) celebrated Naomi Watts and her new film, Fair Game, with a cocktail party aboard Mr. Armani's yacht in Cannes yesterday. Giorgio Armani has a special interest in the movie since he provided Naomi Watts's character, a CIA agent, with her wardrobe. Thierry Mugler, Born-Again

>> After five years of nothing, Thierry Mugler womenswear is ripe for revival. A capsule collection, dubbed Thierry Mugler Edition, will be presented next week, as designed by Rosemary Rodriguez, who worked closely with Mugler from 1994 to 1999.

The revival was prompted by growing demand (see Naomi Watts' and Caroline Trentini's Costume Institute Gala dresses, left) and by the resurgence of Mugler shapes in other designers' work. Emphasis is now being placed on retaining but also modernizing the sharp-shouldered Mugler silhouette.

Meanwhile, Thierry himself is still acting as artistic director for the house's beauty lines . . .

Fashion's Elite Fete The Tribeca Film Festival at Chanel's Annual Dinner

>>With the likes of Lily Donaldson, Arizona Muse, Poppy Delevingne, Leelee Sobieski, Karlie Kloss, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld in attendance at last night's Chanel Tribeca Film Festival dinner, it's no surprise that this year's edition of the annual event would prove to be one of the chicest tickets in town. At iconic downtown restaurant The Odeon, guests of the event - including Liv Tyler and Harley Viera-Newton - dined on a classic French menu of steak frites, roast chicken, and profiteroles, while industry vets Waris Ahluwalia, Giovanna Battaglia, Amanda Brooks, and Alexa Chung mingled with screen stars Naomi Watts and Camilla Belle.

Ralph Lauren, Oprah Winfrey Join Forces For a Black-Tie Conversation at Lincoln Center

>> After chatting with Ralph Lauren during the last season of her talk show earlier this year - "It took me 25 years to score an interview with [him]," Oprah Winfrey said of the designer - the two reunited for a sequel interview last night. The black-tie event, which raised more than $7 million for the Ralph Lauren Center For Cancer Care and Prevention in Harlem and Lincoln Center For the Performing Arts, brought a crowd ranging from Anna Wintour to Naomi Watts to the entire Lauren clan.

Pre-interview, Lauren admitted: "I don't know what she's going to ask, but if I can't answer, I'm going to run." Prabal Gurung, in attendance, hoped that she would ask Lauren about his secrets to success: “I just want a few formulas that I can take back to the office.”

Without further ado, Winfrey introduced Lauren, saying “He designed the fabric of America as we really all know it today, but we’re here tonight because Ralph Lauren is more than just a tastemaker - he’s a lifesaver," before asking him about how he's maintained and reinvented his brand over so many years: "You copy - that's why I am still here, Oprah," he quipped, drawing laughter. More seriously, he added: “I never went to fashion school, I never had the training. It came from inside. I know what it’s like to yearn for something and not have the money to buy it." He also admitted: "After doing this all this time, my hands still get sweaty before a show."

Vogue Paris Takes Surprisingly Commercial Turn with May 2010 Covers

>> It's not unusual for Carine Roitfeld to throw a celebrity cover into the Vogue Paris mix every once and a while, but most covers are still captured with models, and if a celebrity is featured, it's in a very fashion-forward way. Which is why the magazine's May 2010 issue, guest-edited by Penelope Cruz, seems an anomaly. There are three covers, the first with Cruz, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Naomi Watts, and Gwyneth Paltrow, the second capturing Cruz with Bono, and the third showing Cruz with Streep - all featured are either wearing Armani for Project (Red) tees or Gap Product (Red) tees. In the last, Cruz has "(Red)" painted on her arm.

Already, the covers are eliciting reactions - The Cut writes, "This is a surprising, very Hollywood direction for a magazine that loves models so much." And a commenter on The Fashion Spot notes, "[This] is essentially a giant advert for Gap Product Red - they might as well have just used a reprint from the campaign if they were going to do this. The covers look like they're from a subpar issue of Vanity Fair." When Vanity Fair partnered with (Red) for their July 2007 issue - which Bono guest-edited, however, there was no mention of (Red) on the covers - only a red background.
