MAC & Milk Expanding Venue Offering for Fall 2011, Rumored To Be in Talks with IMG About Future Seasons

>> MAC & Milk, the downtown centralized New York Fashion Week venue alternative to Lincoln Center, is expanding its venue offering as it heads into its fourth season. Until this season, all shows have been centralized in the Milk Studios building, but through a partnership with The Standard Hotel, MAC & Milk will have a satellite venue at the hotel's High Line Room in the Meatpacking District, set to be used by up and coming designer labels like Study NY, Bensoni, and Honor.

“We have a new lineup with some new designers, as well as a satellite operation at the Standard Hotel for presentations and shows, including some new emerging designers, which is a new dimension,” John Demsey, group president of Estee Lauder and MAC, said. “We have expanded the geographical territory of using the Meatpacking District.” Mazdack Rassi, creative director of Milk Studios, added: “It’s a community idea as well."

MAC & Milk is working on 20 Lincoln Center shows, 39 staged at MAC & Milk, and 32 off-site shows in total for the Fall 2011 season. And there may be even more big changes by next season - IMG Fashion, which currently has a five year contract to host Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, is rumored to be in talks with MAC & Milk about a partnership that would see IMG help run MAC & Milk in future seasons. Both MAC & Milk and IMG declined comment on the matter.

>> Soon after Maybelline announced it would be be taking over from five-year Bryant Park cosmetics sponsor MAC, MAC - presumedly, as New York Times' Eric Wilson put it, tired of having to share "a rather circuslike stage with other sponsors who were competing for attention, sometimes including makers of doughnuts, cameras, toilets and Big Macs" - announced that it would be producing the tentatively-titled MAC and Milk Fashion Week with Milk Studios at the same time as the traditional New York Fashion Week.

The event can be seen as either a complement or a competitor to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, but on the record, anyway, there seem to be no hard feelings. Milk Studios founder Mazdack Rassi says of the initiative: "This week is not an alternative show space, it's a way of cultivating designers and helping them come up with new ways of selling their clothes." And Zach Eichman, a VP of IMG Fashion, which produces the shows at Bryant Park, told the New York Times last week the company welcomed the MAC and Milk event and that bus service between shows would be available when possible. “We can’t do every show in the tents. We hope they will be successful.”

Milk Studios Promises Cell Phone Reception, Internet This Season

>> Milk Studios provides many things during New York Fashion Week: show venues, after-party spaces, and even tiny cups of cappucino for makeup artists, hairstylists, and models backstage.

But for the past two seasons, the home to Proenza Schouler and Joseph Altuzarra's catwalks has been missing something crucial: cell phone reception.

Fortunately, that changes - starting today. A source at Milk says the space is now armed with signal boosters and a wireless network for fashion show attendees, allowing editors and bloggers the chance to liveblog from the shows, check in with their offices, and catch up on Twitter if a designer's running late.

Pamela Love Spring 2012

>> The tribal symbols of North African Berbers and Morrocan tile work were reference points for Pamela Love's Spring 2012 collection, presented to a packed house - including Anna Wintour - at Milk Studios Saturday night. Models in cowboy hats and turbans posed atop stacked Persian rugs, a 10-piece band played in the corner, and red-hued lights gave off an exotic glow. It was a vibrant scene, one that was matched by the globally-tinged jewelry. New materials have found their way into Love's palette, making for a much brighter offering than in season's past. Red lapis, turquoise, malachite and amythest turn up in hexagonal rings and triangular tile bracelets, while ellipse-shaped breastplates are fashioned from warm-toned wood. Also on display this season was something new for Love: leather belts and clothing crafted especially for the presentation. Click through the slideshow to get an up-close look.

Alejandro Ingelmo Spring 2012

>> It would be hard to miss the buzz surrounding Alejandro Ingelmo's first New York Fashion Week presentation - not only is the designer a recent CFDA nominee, but his shoes have already traipsed the runways of several major shows this week, including Chris Benz and Helmut Lang. So it was no surprise that tonight, in a darkened room at Milk Studios, the throngs vying to get a peek at next season's offerings were at times five and six deep. And no wonder - placed on glistening pedestals under dramatic spot-lighting, the shoes did not disappoint. There were cage heels in mirror-metallics, layered peep-toe booties with cut-away backs, and gilded leather sandals so shiny they seemed to glow from within. But the real knock-outs? Wedges and sandals trimmed with glittering swaths of raw-cut Swarovski Elements. Click through to see the entire collection - including men's - here.

Peter Som Spring 2012

>> "Courtney Love meets Julie Christie; a rich East Village girl who's a bit of a mess," stated hairstylist Eugene Solomon backstage before the Peter Som Spring 2012 show earlier today at Milk Studios. It was an acurate description, not only of the hair - which was side-swooped and puntuated with Kool-aid-hued strips - but also of the collection itself, with it's updated '60s silhouettes, vibrant hues, Charlotte Olympia-designed platforms, and chic-surfer mood. "I really wanted to convey the strength and energy of downtown in the prints, the tweeds, all the things that I love," Som explained. To that end, there were cropped pants in large-scale photo-florals, retro-tinged bathing suits in zebra-head repeats, collarless jackets in graphic houndstooth, and high-shine skirts in canary yellow. The buoyant mood on the runway was matched only by the first-day-of-school vibe in the front row - Tommy Hilfiger, Taylor Tomasi Hill, Amanda Hearst, Bryan Boy, and Joanna Hillman were there, as was Anna Dello Russo who chatted with seatmate Hanneli Mustaparta.

Andrew Rosen Could Have a Proenza Schouler Stake By Tomorrow; Plus, the Label's New Campaign

>> A deal that has been rumored since March 2010 could go through as soon as this Friday, Cathy Horyn reports, although she notes that the talks are not yet complete.

European private equity firm Permira - which took a 45 percent stake in Proenza Schouler four years ago and is also the principle owner of Valentino - is expected to sell its shares to a group of New York investors led by Andrew Rosen (founder of Theory, overseer of Helmut Lang, and investor in both Rag & Bone and Alice + Olivia) and John Howard, an early and successful investor in Seven for All Mankind and Aeropostale.

Horyn speculates that after the deal is complete, Proenza Schouler may explore more product categories like denim or bolster its accessories offering with more leather goods, shoes, and eyewear.

As for Proenza launches already in the works, the label just released its Fall 2011 ad campaign (left), shot in New York's Milk Studios by Willy Vanderperre, styled by Marie Chaix, and starring Zuzanna Bijoch.

Bright Silks and Velvet Loafers Take Over Jenni Kayne’s Fall 2011 Runway

>> Jenni Kayne, awaiting the birth of her second child, was too pregnant to make the trip from California to New York to show her Fall 2011 collection at Milk Studios today - but the show must go on. True to her modern quirky girl aesthetic, Kayne delivered a collection inspired by “a cool girl at her country house,” which in Kayne’s world, means feathered skirts, fur collars, nubby sweaters, leather shirt dresses, and clean tailored jackets. And it all works - blame it on the magnificent jewel-toned velvet loafers worn with every look. The obvious highlight of the collection were Kayne’s fluid silks, comprising trousers, long bias-cut skirts, and dresses dipped in hot pink, nude, cobalt, mustard, and a rich chocolate brown. Stylist Keegan Singh accessorized with minimal yet high-impact pieces in the way of fur cossack hats and retro sunnies, all adding to that cool-with-a-twist factor Kayne is renowned for.
