>> Official government parties might not be the first place to look for style inspiration, but Michelle Obama, Anna Wintour, and the other women who attended the White House's state dinner for British Prime Minister David Cameron looked ultra chic last night.

To wit: the first lady dressed up in a deep blue custom Marchesa gown - and she thanked the fashion house by way of inviting designer Georgina Chapman, who wore a sparkly pale blue dress of her own design. Meanwhile, Samantha Cameron wore a stunning lace-covered dress by British designer Alessandra Rich, and Wintour brought the Chanel couture dress she wore to the 2009 Met Gala out of her closet for the occasion. Downton Abbey's Elizabeth McGovern and PBS reporter Gwen Ifill also got glammed up - stroll through the slideshow to see what they wore.

Did you watch the premiere of NBC's new reality show Fashion Star last night? Apparently, some of the fashion industry people who did were none too impressed. Style bloggers Tom & Lorenzo called the entire affair "freaking American Idol with sewing machines." [Fashion ETC]

Kate Middleton Tops Vanity Fair's 2011 Best-Dressed List

>> Vanity Fair has released a preview of its 2011 International Best-Dressed List today, with Kate Middleton - recognized for her "whirlwind of fashion successes" - on top (Her inaugural appearance on the list came back in 2008.). Another recently-married royal - Charlene Wittstock - makes her list debut, and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is back for the fourth time. Michelle Obama, meanwhile, who is on the list for the fourth year running, makes her first appearance together with Barack Obama in the Best-Dressed Couples category.

As actresses go, Carey Mulligan shows up for a second time; same goes for Tilda Swinton, who's returning after a three-year hiatus. Shala Monroque appears for the first time, while Claire and Virginie Courtin-Clarins and Cara, Chloe, and Poppy Delevingne all make the Siblings category. And Lady Gaga is given her second recognition in the Fashion Originals category, where she's joined by Vanessa Paradis.

(Although she went with American designer Barbara Tfank to meet Kate Middleton and Prince William earlier today; the Reiss dress Middleton wore for the occasion promptly sold out online.).

This evening, however, for the state dinner with Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace, Michelle chose an ivory ruched georgette ribbon gown by Tom Ford, the American designer who also happens to make his home half the year in London, where his studios are located.

Oscar de la Renta Criticizes Michelle Obama for Wearing Alexander McQueen to State Dinner

>> Michelle Obama has taken to wearing British designers this week - she wore Roksanda Ilincic for the first time while greeting Chinese president Hu at the White House on Wednesday and then chose an Alexander McQueen gown by Sarah Burton (left) for the state dinner honoring the People's Republic of China that evening.

Oscar de la Renta, who two years ago criticized what he said was Obama's lack of support of American fashion, is back again, questioning why she chose the McQueen gown for the occasion. “My understanding,” de la Renta told WWD, “is that the visit was to promote American-Chinese trade - American products in China and Chinese products in America. Why do you wear European clothes?”

De la Renta noted that Obama continues to have the power to boost a house's business, and added: “I’m not talking about my clothes, my business. I’m old, and I don’t need it. But there are a lot of young people, very talented people here who do."

The Mulleavys were honored last night for winning the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Awards fashion design category by host Michelle Obama, but pulled out on attending the ceremony early yesterday morning. Their spokesman sent an email saying that the designers “had a change of plans," later adding that they “had a family obligation to attend to in Los Angeles."
