Gossip Girls Become Lorick Ladies Tonight

Ten looks from the collection will be featured on "Eleanor Waldorf's runway" during Gossip Girl tonight, with guest star Michael Kors sitting front row and center.

Alberta Ferretti is counting on California with a 4,500-square-foot space on Melrose Avenue that will house the designer's entire set of lines. It carries the Alberta Ferretti collection, Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti, accessories, footwear and Alberta Ferretti Girl. And in a reverse commute of Ferretti's, Michael Kor's opens a boutique in Milan

Elizabeth and James, the surprisingly decent brainchild of fashion tots Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen, is branching out into footwear. Sadly they have struck a deal with Steven Madden Ltd to do the line.

The winners of the Make Your Mark in Fashion competition in Britain, Mia, used second hand clothing sourced in Malawi to create new fashions. Awww yay!

Because its totally possible to transcend the unhip essence of tying a noose around your neck by with ironic names and edgy designers. Might we suggest that really being cool means owning your own style not going garishly over the top?

Calvin Klein still believes that talent and hard work are what make you a success in fashion. Really? Tell that to the political animals over at Gucci Group huh?

Michael Kors tells us that he is a bit of a beach bum at heart (no way!) giving his Spring 2009 collection a bit of a Portofino meets Malibu vibe. Graphic, edgy but ultimately sporty its classic Kors.

>> Michael Kors is hitting 30 years in the business this year, but just because he's celebrating doesn't mean he's slowing down, he tells the Los Angeles Times: "There will be another 30 years. I'm not 80. This isn't the hydraulic lift coming up at the Oscars and the slow wave. I still feel like a kid."

His attitude toward designing has changed since he started, however: "Initially, my clothes couldn't be expensive enough. I went from thinking fashion was only the provenance of big-city affluent people, to thinking you could be 14 or 80, live in the city or suburbs, have endless money or a limited budget, and buy something great-looking at the right price for you. The world has changed, and people look and feel better for it."

And he plays his part to make sure the lower-priced Michael Michael Kors collection is quality: "I always say, 'If you blurred your eyes, would the wealthiest person in the world want to wear it?' If the answer is no, we don't make it."

Kors, who dressed Mark Wahlberg's wife, Rhea Durham, for the Golden Globes over the weekend, doesn't see himself as a red carpet panderer: "If it's a client of ours, or someone I'm intrigued by, then collaboration is great. But we're never going to have rolling racks with ball gowns all over town. That's not who we are."

But he does have ambitions in the entertainment industry. He's represented by Creative Artists Agency, and although he doesn't want to direct a la Tom Ford, he says, "My real love is theater and stage. But unfortunately, my day job is busy, to say the least. Could we see Michael Kors the impresario in the future? Maybe. Producing something would be intriguing."

>> Many designers, models, and industry figures have given their thoughts on John Galliano and his scandal in the past couple of weeks; today, the words of a few more - Rachel Zoe, Natalia Vodianova, and Michael Kors - have been published:

Rachel Zoe: “It’s a little insane and super-sad. Anti-Semitism, racism or any prejudice is not something I tolerate. I’ve fired clients because they were anti-Semitic, or anti-everything, except what they were . . . I’ve known John Galliano and his boyfriend for years. I don’t know enough about it to make a clear statement, but if it’s true, it’s tragic.”

Natalia Vodianova: “I have seen so many people do monstrous things under the influence of alcohol and drugs. This is a disease. I hope John will get help, and that’s what he needs right now. That’s what we should care about is the person. Everything’s going on - as long as it goes on for John as well. He’s certainly not a bad man. We all know that.”

Michael Kors: “I’m not saying that he shouldn’t have the rules of everyone else, but it breaks my heart to see someone as talented as he is to be in this situation."

Michael Kors, Coco Rocha Uncover Fashion's Nasty Habits at CFDA Health Event

>> At last night's CFDA-hosted "Beauty of Health" discussion, Michael Kors, Coco Rocha, and casting agent James Scully all stepped up to the plate to address the waning weights of models.

Kors threw in a designer's perspective, suggesting that his peers should "stay away from child-size clothes unless [they're] designing for children," and pointing out that when designers offer such small sample sizes and celebrities starve themselves to fit into them, their super-skinny aesthetic has a far-reaching impact on the general female population. He also advised agents to only send the most suitable girls to castings: “Sending a girl when there's little chance of her being booked throws a 16-year-old into a tizzy. The odds of a girl being booked for my show and Rick Owens’s are slim.”

Next up to the podium was Coco Rocha, who just like Natalia Vodianova and Ali Michael before her, admitted that the job comes with some very unhealthy habits. Two years ago, she weighed 108 pounds (at 5'10"), and yet people were stilling telling her "you need to lose more weight. The look this year is anorexic. We don't want you to be anorexic, we just want you to look it." Even crazier, an agent once advised her to throw up after meals.

Eventually, she submitted to the pressure. "Last season I took diuretic pills. Once I took so many on an empty stomach that I was doubled over for hours. That's the last time I ever did something so terrible to my body." She asked designers to provide healthier food at their shows — "No one wants to be caught with that photo 'Model Eats Cake'" — and to make their fit models, and therefore their sample sizes, bigger — models are humiliated when zippers won't zip up at castings.

Finally, casting agent James Scully advised insiders to consider the weight of their words. "Let's stop treating models like greyhounds we plan to shoot after a race. We have to remember we are dealing with real people who have real feelings."

Francisco Costa, Georgina Chapman, Keren Craig, Donna Karan, Richard Chai, Marcus Wainwright, David Neville, Derek Lam, Doo-Ri Chung, Diane von Furstenberg, Phillip Lim, and Anna Wintour, plus several other Vogue editors, were all in attendance at the event — which leaves quite a few American designers unaccounted for. But as Michael Kors pointed out, designers aren't the only people responsible. "The next one we need to do is about skinny people who work in fashion: editors, buyers, stylists. That’s called ‘Why Does This Sample Fit Me?”

>> When he showed off his red, blue, and stripe-filled Pre-Fall 2011 collection last week, Michael Kors had plenty to say about the collection's season: "All you writers in the room need to come up with a new word. 'Pre' [as in pre-fall] is disgusting." He continued: "Everyone knows now that resort is important, but because the name 'pre-fall' is so ugly, no one wants to acknowledge that these are the clothes you actually put in your closet.”

It's true: Pre-Fall is “the hardest working season,” according to Kors, because it's in stores for so long - May through July. “It has become the season you sell the most clothes. And they’re clothes that can be whatever season you want them to be. Often it just depends on what’s on your feet.” Kors takes a “soup to nuts” approach, which means work clothes, Summer wedding clothes, casual clothes, and everything in between, including “clothes for the fashion flock to wear to the shows in September. I can’t look at people in fur, tweed, and boots on Sept. 12. You just look ridiculous - like you have no life.”
