Johnson Hartig Displays Cool Prints and Covetable Coats For Libertine’s Fall 2011 Collection

>> Libertine last showed in 2009 via presentation, and it's been since 2006 that the label has done a runway show. But designer Johnson Hartig brought his clothes back to the catwalk today, with former Libertine design partner Cindy Greene (who left the label two years ago), Rodarte’s Kate Mulleavy, Thom Browne, and Meredith Melling Burke and her daughter Eloise (who happily snapped pictures of the whole event with her mother’s iPhone) all in attendance.

The collection was a welcome explosion of color - ranging anywhere from hot pink to yellow - and pieces like giant puff-sleeved tops, funky frocks, and bright three-quarter length coats all displayed Hartig’s inclination for a vivid Fall. A screenprint effect was splashed over tops, silk dresses, tweed overcoats, cropped trousers, and even tights. The rare times when color wasn’t present, Hartig turned to black and grey wool jackets adorned with gothic-inspired embellishments. To finish off the looks, eye-catching tights and an amazing colorful selection of colorblock platform booties - designed by Hartig himself.

Alber Elbaz Didn't Think There Would Be Anyone in Line for the Lanvin H&M Collection

>> Editors - including Katie Grand - were regularly spotted exiting the Lanvin for H&M preshopping event on Thursday with three or four bags, and Meredith Melling Burke wore the collection's red tulle dress to Vogue writer Stephanie LaCava's black tie wedding over the weekend, so it's no surprise that when made available to the masses on Saturday, consumers reacted similarly, often spending, as The Cut points out, as much as they might on a piece from the Lanvin runway collection.

WWD tracked shoppers in New York and LA shelling out $1,700 or $1,800 in one fell swoop - the former shopper noting it was "the most I've ever spent in my life" - and one man who spent $3,000 buying up basically everything in the women's collection for his wife, who "is pregnant and can't be here, so I am doing a run."

Alber Elbaz, originally said he planned to head home from New York on Saturday - "You could have a baby in the time it took us to work on this. I'm going to be in bed, watching TV, and ordering Chinese food." But it seems he had a change of heart. He arrived a bit before 8 a.m. in a black Town Car across from the Manhattan H&M flagship to marvel at the line. "We stayed in New York one more night so we could see this," Elbaz told WWD. "I don’t dare go in. I can't believe it. I was sure there would be no one. I was a bit panicked. This is a once in a lifetime experience." But he must have gotten the courage to exit the vehicle, because he was snapped outside taking it all in.

>> Now that Style.com has moved out from under Conde Nast Digital and likewise goes for the Conde magazines' websites - including Vogue.com and WMagazine.com - which are now fully under their publishers' control, there are a few more staffing changes happening over at Conde Nast.

Vogue senior market editor Meredith Melling Burke will now be straddling both print and online responsibilities - in addition to her current role at the magazine, she has been promoted to fashion market editor at Vogue.com, where she will increase the website's fashion content. And former Elle SVP and chief brand officer Carol Smith, who surprised many when she left after eight years to join Conde Nast as VP and publishing director of Bon Appetit and Gourmet in April, has left the company. “The opportunity turned out not to be what either Conde Nast or I expected,” she said in a statement released by Conde Nast. Tom Florio, who hired Smith, left the company in June.

Karlie Kloss To Appear on Gossip Girl Season Premiere

>> Vogue's Meredith Melling Burke isn't the only fashion fixture to make a cameo on the season four premiere of Gossip Girl. The show, airing Monday, Sept. 13, also features Karlie Kloss playing herself at a Fashion's Night Out meeting - and she even has a line. In the fictional version of FNO (which is featured in the first two Gossip Girl episodes of the season, the second airing Sept. 27), Lily Van Der Woodsen (Kelly Rutherford) and Eleanor Waldorf (Margaret Colin) are on the planning committee. Although no pictures of Kloss or Melling Burke on set have popped up, there are a few of Hamish Bowles, who filmed with Rutherford for the second episode of the season, below.

Rumor Mill: Meredith Melling Burke and Tabitha Simmons to T, Kate Lanphear to Glamour?

>> After losing the T editorship - which she at one point thought she was a shoo-in for - to Sally Singer, the magazine's fashion director Anne Christensen has resigned from her post. She wrote to WWD during a break from styling for Vogue China: “I’ve had a great 10 years at the Times and T magazines under 2 creative and smart editors: Amy Spindler and Stefano Tonchi. I’m very proud of the work I’ve done there and particularly proud of the upcoming Fall women’s T that I worked very hard on. Now I’m happy to move on to other adventures. I wish Sally Singer the best of luck. She has inherited a wonderful group of people at T.” As for her future: “I do want to explore other magazine possibilities. I like having magazine as a base - for a stylist, it gives you a real voice, and that’s important. And I have a great freelance career that I will continue, as well.”

Sophie Theallet Takes Home 2009 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Win

>> Last night, with the help of keynote speaker Alber Elbaz, who doled out gems on the perils of success - "It's like a bottle of perfume. You smell it, you don't sniff it or drink it" - Alaia veteran and Michelle Obama favorite Sophie Theallet took home the 2009 Vogue/Fashion Fund prize of $200,000 and a year of mentoring. Fellow nominees Patrik Ervell and Monique Pean were named runners-up, and received $50,000 each plus a business mentor.

In her speech, Anna Wintour said that in addition to the US, Italy, and the UK - which just started a similar talent-nurturing program - she just met with the French minister of culture about mirroring the contest there. "And Brazil, India, Russia, and China aren't far behind."

Theallet Tweeted of her win: "my american dream comes true tonight thanks and much love to all of you!xox." Cathy Horyn, too, weighed in on the choice:

"The money and the mentoring will help Ms. Theallet because she needs to be able to offer more range in her collection, as well as expand her production options. She has such a distinctly feminine eye, and the skills, that I’ve often wondered why a big retailer doesn’t ask Ms. Theallet to design some blouses and summer dresses for them, using the store’s resources and manufacturing connections."

Banana Republic Breaks Down Massive New Store into Mini Boutiques

Last night Banana Republic opened its 18,000-square foot prototype store in New York's SoHo. Guests including ELLE's Joe Zee and Robbie Myers, Vogue's Meredith Melling Burke, and Vanity Fair's Alexis Bryan Morgan walked through the gigantic two-level store, which has been divided into smaller boutiques based on occasion (city weekend, evening out) and category (accessories, vintage). Down the street, the former men's Banana Republic store is turing into a Gap.

>> Low-to-No-Heels (Even the Kitten Heel) Getting Nods from Stylish Key Editors, Marc Jacobs for Spring 2010 -Various editors at Vogue have been rooting for less heel, more flat shoes since resort season, and this past week, at least two editors who love their heels have been going lower: Meredith Melling Burke pulled on knee-high black boots with maybe a half-inch heel, and Giovanna Battaglia chose, of all things, the kitten heel.
