Emmanuelle Alt Explains Her Vision for Vogue Paris, Her Stance on Celebrity Covers

>> During couture, Emmanuelle Alt hinted that Vogue Paris under her direction would be "the same, but different"; Vogue's Mark Holgate got her to expand a little more on her vision for the magazine:

“I want to keep the quality, the photographers we work with - David [Sims], Mert and Marcus, Mario [Testino], and Bruce Weber. I don’t think there should be radical changes. The magazine should still be chic and sophisticated. It’s a bit like buying an apartment: Before you move in, you have all these plans of what you are going to do, but then you get there, and you realize it is better to spend time living in it, and transforming it over time. I’d like there to be more beauty trends; there was so much of that in Vogue back in the eighties. More French girls, more French lifestyle. And I am going to keep shooting for the magazine - hopefully a story every issue." She adds: "I always want a relationship with reality: nothing too sexy, or provocative, or fashion victim. We are French - we can show smoking, nudity. We have no boundaries, and it can be good to have them."

As for her position on celebrity covers: “We don’t have a systematic point of view on it. But here in France we are back in a much more glamorous time. French actresses were respected, but not so evidently in the fashion world. Now we have Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg. I’d be very happy to put an actress on the cover if she is the right girl.” And her model favorites are no surprise: “Daria [Werbowy] is the girl I work with the most. She has a natural, strong beauty. You can put her in a white tee and she will make it look fantastic. I like Kate [Moss] too, because she cares about clothes. Most models don’t care what you put them in, they just play the game.”

>> Despite the fact that his Spring 2011 couture show was inspired by the English punk rock movement and the French can can, Jean Paul Gaultier didn't play any musical soundtrack. Instead, the models paraded in their mohawks and their individual outfits - named things like "The Clash," "Belle Epoque," "Anarchy in the UK," and "Moulin Rouge" - carrying a number in the old school couture way, with Catherine Deneuve calling out the number and then describing the looks in a voiceover. The show, which started over an hour late, culminated in the androgynous male model Andrej Pejic - Gaultier's new favorite - appearing as couture bride in a semi-sheer gown. As the model parade ended, Gaultier finally let the music loose, unleashing a Crazy Horse can can dancer to do splits and kicks down the runway to Offenbach as Deneuve and Pedro Almodovar cheered. The designer took his bow with Farida Khelfa, who walked and also recently completed a documentary on him.

Backstage, Jeanne Beker reports, Gaultier said he "has disdain for the red carpet. Loved seeing Marion Cotillard in his mermaid dress [at the 2008 Oscars] BUT.....He wonders why some houses actually PAY actresses to wear their dresses. And he misses CHER!"

>> As Marion Cotillard's Lady Dior saga is coming to a close - her final installment of ads, "Lady Grey," just debuted with a short film directed by John Cameron Mitchell - Natalie Portman's own Dior saga is just beginning. Portman's upcoming Miss Dior Cherie campaign was just announced and will break on TV and in print in March. Tim Walker and Sofia Coppola, the team who worked on the launch of former Miss Dior Cherie face Maryna Linchuk back in 2008, are back to do the print and TV ads, respectively, with Portman. Of her co-star in the TV ads, Portman said: "I felt like a big old cougar. He's, like, 20."

Marion Cotillard's Lady Dior Saga Continues With "Lady Blue"

The print campaign images for John Galliano's latest installment of his Lady Dior saga are out. In the third of a four-part series, Marion Cotillard stars in the Steven Klein-lensed photographs with Shanghai's futuristic skyscrapers in the distance. Titled "Lady Blue," the still images will be followed by a David Lynch-directed film to be released online on May 15.

The short film will depict Cotillard in a mysterious entanglement with secret agents, highlighting Shanghai's Oriental Pearl Tower in the background, much like the Brooklyn Bridge and the Eiffel Tower were used in the first two episodes. Galliano said of the 12-minute film: “Marion is reciting a poem that [David Lynch] wrote, and was inspired by the Pearl Tower itself. The words and building fuse in the picture he paints on-screen. Shanghai is such a vibrant and inspiring city.” Also on May 15, Galliano will present his cruise collection for Christian Dior in Shanghai.

John Galliano Transforms Karlie Kloss Into A Young Lauren Bacall for Christian Dior

Seventeen-year-old Karlie Kloss was the most photographed model in American Vogue last year and the 5'11" beauty continues her model takeover in John Galliano's Christian Dior spring ad campaign.

Speaking of the advertising photo shoot in today's WWD, Galliano gushes, "“Karlie Kloss smoldered with the same intensity and wide-eyed look as a young Lauren Bacall. I love the smoky, sophisticated atmosphere of the image. This feels very right for now - escapist and sensual. . . You can start a whole script just by staring into her eyes.” The campaign, like the spring 2010 Dior show in Pairs last October, was inspired by “shadowy film noir cinema” and photographed by Steven Meisel to introduce “modern-day billboard siren.”

In other Dior news, Marion Cotillard will appear in her second short film for the design house-a music video called "Lady Rouge"-making its web debut on January 14. With music and lyrics by Fraz Ferdinand, Cotillard plays a New York City working girl who transforms into a jazz signer after dark.

Marion Cotillard's Lady Dior Falls Short of Lady Lisa

>> Marion Cotillard's new Lady Dior handbag ad has been reminding some of Erwin Blumenfeld's iconic series of photographs that appeared in May 1939 Vogue, featuring Lisa Fonssagrives swinging from the girders of the Eiffel Tower in a Lucien Lelong dress. The only problem is, Lisa was actually being photographed on the Eiffel, whereas Marion looks like she's been photoshopped in . . . with nothing to stand on. Since this ad is only the first in a series of four done by Peter Lindbergh, maybe the photographs - or the photoshopping - will get better as they progress. Further details about the next city Marion will appear in with her bag will be revealed on LadyDior.com, which goes live later this month.

>> Tod's enlisted Gwyneth Paltrow for a Dennis Hopper-directed short film showcasing their Pashmy bag late last year, and now another luxury brand is trying the same big-name actress, big-name director formula to showcase their own bestselling handbag. Tomorrow, Dior officially launches their six and a half minute thriller, "The Lady Noire Affair," which reunites Marion Cotillard with her La vie en rose director Olivier Dahan and showcases the Lady Dior handbag, but we've got the full video right here, all dim cinematography and foot chases on the Eiffel Tower.

Accompanying print ads will run in lieu of the traditional, seasonal Dior campaign, because Dior CEO Sidney Toledano finds the formula wanting, and at the end of "The Lady Noire Affaire," the next film and print segment for Fall 2009, "Lady Rouge," is teased with Marion appearing almost unrecognizable as a blonde in a lace gown. "Lady Rouge" will be shot in New York.

>> Vogue Paris Picks an Actress for September 2010 Cover, First Time in Five Years -Marion Cotillard may have graced Vogue's cover before Vogue Paris's - surprising considering that she's a French actress - but maybe it's because Carine Roitfeld was saving her for the coveted September issue spot. Unlike their American couterpart, however, VP doesn't shy away from putting models on their September covers - Lara Stone scored last year's cover, and Marion's marks the first actress on a Vogue Paris September cover since Nicole Kidman in 2005. Cotillard - much like Alessandra Ambrosio on one of Love's Fall covers - gets the bleached eyebrow treatment for the occasion, and is photographed by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. [TFS]
