New York Fashion Weeks in 2010: More Mac at Milk, Fashion's Night Out, and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff Back in the Game

>> A month after the Spring 2010 shows finished, plans are already under way for the upcoming seasons. Estee Lauder group president John Demsey confirmed that MAC will continue to sponsor an alternative New York Fashion Week venue at Milk Studios for the next two years, Fashion's Night Out is in the works again for next Fall - some retailers are even pushing to make the September 9 date sales tax-free.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, which will have its last hurrah at Bryant Park in February for the Fall 2010 season, is moving to Lincoln Center starting in September 2010. Today, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, who resigned from Vogue back in June, ostensibly to spend more time with her family, has joined Lincoln Center as director, fashion week. Winston Wolkoff was director of special events at Vogue and was widely credited with building the Costume Institute Gala into the event it is today; she starts in her new position Jan. 1.

>> Soon after Maybelline announced it would be be taking over from five-year Bryant Park cosmetics sponsor MAC, MAC - presumedly, as New York Times' Eric Wilson put it, tired of having to share "a rather circuslike stage with other sponsors who were competing for attention, sometimes including makers of doughnuts, cameras, toilets and Big Macs" - announced that it would be producing the tentatively-titled MAC and Milk Fashion Week with Milk Studios at the same time as the traditional New York Fashion Week.

The event can be seen as either a complement or a competitor to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, but on the record, anyway, there seem to be no hard feelings. Milk Studios founder Mazdack Rassi says of the initiative: "This week is not an alternative show space, it's a way of cultivating designers and helping them come up with new ways of selling their clothes." And Zach Eichman, a VP of IMG Fashion, which produces the shows at Bryant Park, told the New York Times last week the company welcomed the MAC and Milk event and that bus service between shows would be available when possible. “We can’t do every show in the tents. We hope they will be successful.”

MAC & Milk Expanding Venue Offering for Fall 2011, Rumored To Be in Talks with IMG About Future Seasons

>> MAC & Milk, the downtown centralized New York Fashion Week venue alternative to Lincoln Center, is expanding its venue offering as it heads into its fourth season. Until this season, all shows have been centralized in the Milk Studios building, but through a partnership with The Standard Hotel, MAC & Milk will have a satellite venue at the hotel's High Line Room in the Meatpacking District, set to be used by up and coming designer labels like Study NY, Bensoni, and Honor.

“We have a new lineup with some new designers, as well as a satellite operation at the Standard Hotel for presentations and shows, including some new emerging designers, which is a new dimension,” John Demsey, group president of Estee Lauder and MAC, said. “We have expanded the geographical territory of using the Meatpacking District.” Mazdack Rassi, creative director of Milk Studios, added: “It’s a community idea as well."

MAC & Milk is working on 20 Lincoln Center shows, 39 staged at MAC & Milk, and 32 off-site shows in total for the Fall 2011 season. And there may be even more big changes by next season - IMG Fashion, which currently has a five year contract to host Fashion Week at Lincoln Center, is rumored to be in talks with MAC & Milk about a partnership that would see IMG help run MAC & Milk in future seasons. Both MAC & Milk and IMG declined comment on the matter.

Milk Studios Promises Cell Phone Reception, Internet This Season

But for the past two seasons, the home to Proenza Schouler and Joseph Altuzarra's catwalks has been missing something crucial: cell phone reception.

Fortunately, that changes - starting today. A source at Milk says the space is now armed with signal boosters and a wireless network for fashion show attendees, allowing editors and bloggers the chance to liveblog from the shows, check in with their offices, and catch up on Twitter if a designer's running late.

Gareth Pugh confirmed that he will be showing a video directed by Ruth Hogben on Sept. 13 to "set the mood for [his] catwalk show that will take place as usual in Paris." Temperley London is taking their interactive Spring 2010 multimedia presentation on the road for the second time, starting in New York Sept. 15 before evolving in format for London Fashion Week and then again in Paris, where it will become an exhibit. The film aspect, plus stills and a behind-the-scenes cut will be readily available online on Temperley's new website.

Pamela Love to Launch Lower-Priced Line, Show at New York Fashion Week

>> Pamela Love, she of the cult-loved talon cuff and bird skull necklaces, is working on a lower-priced line. She told Elle she's "not sure if it will have a different name" but wants to make sure that the "imagery is similar and represents the same feeling without compromising the fine jewelry. We don’t want to do knock-offs of something in a different material. Different pieces but similar feeling."

So what is she thinking for the pieces that ring in at a lower price point?

"Everything is made in my studio, so it’s kind of expensive because of that. The only way to really produce in-house and make it affordable is to use more affordable materials. So I think we’re going to start using some costume materials to see if we can lower the price point and also at the same time try to make some really crazy extravagant pieces that are just mind-blowing and amazing. I’d like the costume pieces to be great but affordable, because right now I can’t really even necessarily afford my jewelry. But I want to keep making my stuff by hand in New York and no China, not overseas, not in a factory. So we’re just trying to come up with the most creative ways for next season to have a lower price point line."
