Le Monde Launches T Magazine-Inspired M with Audrey Marnay

>> New York Times T Magazine envy has now gone global. At the beginning of this month, Le Monde launched the creatively-named M, its version of a lifestyle magazine, which has apparently been under development for a year and will publish monthly, making it slightly less frequent than T, which publishes 15 times a year. Matthias Vriens photographed the first cover with Audrey Marnay, plus an accompanying model-filled editorial inside; so far, the look is much more on par with a fashion magazine than the other T-inspired spinoff: The Wall Street Journal's WSJ.

Elizabeth Olsen Says Her Sisters Don't Dress Her

>> Elizabeth Olsen has been making style waves everywhere she goes - and lately, she's been everywhere. This week alone, the 22-year-old actress has been turning heads from Paris to Park City, in brands that run the gamut from Topshop to Chanel.

In a recent interview, the star of the upcoming films Red Lights and Liberal Arts opened up about her favorite designers: "Definitely Marni and Céline"; her penchant for Proenza: "I wore an orange floral Proenza Schouler dress that I was, like, obsessed with to the W magazine pre-Golden Globes party"; and her current wardrobe go-tos: "I always wear leather pants - always from The Row."

But does Olsen ever ask her famous sisters for styling advice? "It's funny to be asked that because I don't live with them, and they don't dress me. Like, I'm an adult," she explains.

>> Anna Wintour and Hamish Bowles appeared on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday to talk past Vogue covers and the new online, subscription-based Vogue Archive, which houses every single magazine page published in Vogue's 120-year history.
The video in full is below, but a few highlights from Wintour's interview:
On her first cover in 1988 - an outtake image from a noncover shoot, featuring a model in jeans: "To me, it just said, 'This is something new. This is something different.' And I remember the printers called us up because they thought we'd made a mistake. Just wanting to check that that actually was the cover."
On blazing the trail of celebrity covers: "I remember getting quite a bit of criticism for my first Madonna cover. And you know, 'She'll never sell.' And it was a little bit risky. And it was up something extraordinary, like 40 percent on newsstands. So that was an eye-opener to all of us."
On whether she made that choice because she "knew something": "I didn't know anything. I never pay any attention. I'm sure it's not such a good way to be, but I don't really follow market research. And in the end I do respond to my own instincts. Sometimes they're successful, and obviously sometimes they're not. But you have to, I think, remain true to what you believe in."

Fabien Baron, Karl Templer Starting New Magazine and M/M Paris to Interview?

>> Yesterday's surprising news came in the form of co-editorial director Fabien Baron leaving Interview and taking creative director Karl Templer with him. Today's surprising news? Also about Fabien Baron - it's rumored that he may be launching his own publication with Templer.

Brant Publications released a statement in response to their exits today, confirming that Baron "decided to resign in order to focus on [his agency Baron & Baron]" and Templer resigned "in order to focus on other projects."

Baron also commented on his move - "now it’s time to focus all my energy on my own business and the many clients that have been loyal to me over the years" - but does his "own business" include a new magazine, as the buzz among his colleagues indicates? His "many clients" - which include luxury brands that Baron directs and sometimes even photographs ads for - could, as Gawker points out, allow Baron to be "especially well positioned to land what remains of [luxury print advertising]."

Meanwhile, back at Interview, M/M Paris, who just like Fabien Baron are well known for their work with Vogue Paris and luxury advertising, are said to be taking over creative direction.

Carine Roitfeld Plans to Launch a Magazine Next September

>> Carine Roitfeld has been hinting a lot at her next big project, but now she confirms (translated from French): "It will be a magazine." She continues: "I would love to do four times a year. Initially, I wanted it on the Internet, but it's a lot of investment, a lot of time, I do not know if it suits me. I know that now you have to work with the Internet, and the photos are of very good quality on the iPad, but things quickly go out of style on the Internet. We'll start with print. A September issue next Fall, in English."

Roitfeld told Dazed Digital of the magazine last week: "It will be something less frequent than a monthly to make it more iconic, more collectible. I want to make something really beautiful, chic, different. . . . I have to find a new way, so I am dreaming about it and working it out."

She also recently hinted at who she might be working with: "I have a lot to say about fashion, not just about fashion but beauty, art. I'm looking for a new way to talk to readers. We make the dream team - Marie-Amelie Sauve, [Mario] Testino, Stephen Gan."

As for whether she has a name for the magazine: "Yes. I cannot tell you, I'm trying to see if it's not already filed, but I think it suits me, it's pretty rock and roll. I could call it Carine Roitfeld in the manner of Oprah Winfrey, and put myself on the cover every month like she does, but I'm not sure if this is what people want. At the moment, they see me a lot, I'll even do a signing [of her new book, Irreverent] at Colette and it amuses me, but after I want to disappear."

And how she envisions the magazine: "I do not want to compete with Vogue. Besides, I'm not sure they see me coming from a very good eye. It will not be easy for me to run independently. It's a little earthen pot against the iron pot. But I still have friends willing to support me. I would like to succeed in mixing a lot of people very different, as for a dinner."

Tavi Gevinson's New Web Magazine, Rookie, Launching Monday

>> After announcing last month that she had parted ways with Jane Pratt and Say Media - the backers of Pratt's website, xojane.com - Tavi Gevinson is readying the launch of her own Web magazine, Rookie, on Monday.

The site's editorial content will have monthly themes, with the first focused around beginnings - “[It's] fairly wide-ranging, but definitely focused on ‘back-to-school’ and other ‘firsts,’” said Emily Condon, Rookie's managing editor, who was a former staffer for This American Life.

“Our content respects a kind of intelligence in the readers that right now a lot of writing about teenage girls doesn’t,” Gevinson told New York Times Magazine. “People think it’s just going to be another site or magazine that talks about how great celebrities are or how awful celebrities are or dieting . . .” she said. “And I’m like, ‘Just you wait and see.’”

Gevinson expects to do around three posts a day, with the first appearing after school, the second at dinnertime and the third “when you do your last Facebook check around bed or whatever,” Gevinson said. “I’m in school, and I can’t be at my computer all day.”

She's assembled a staff that includes Condon; New York Times blog specialist Jeremy Zilar acting as Rookie's project manager; Anaheed Alani (wife to This American Life's Ira Glass, who advised Gevinson in negotiations with Say Media, and a former freelance fact-checker for The New York Times Magazine) as story editor; regular writers like Lesley Arfin and Sady Doyle; and guest contributors including Zooey Deschanel, Miranda July, Winnie Holzman, Joss Whedon, Jack Black, Dan Savage, Patton Oswalt, Shannon Woodward, Anna Faris, Kid Sister, Supercute!, Paul Feig, JD Samson, Alia Shawkat, and Fred Armisen.

New York magazine's parent company, New York Media, is handling advertising for the site, and Gevinson's father, who now acts as her manager, says they're currently in talks with potential investors and sponsors.

Lori Goldstein Named W Style Editor at Large

>> Just six weeks after Edward Enninful joined W as fashion and style director, his former colleague at Vogue Italia, Lori Goldstein, has joined the magazine as style editor at large. Goldstein has been a free agent for years, and noted that taking a masthead title and “being more of a part of a magazine, which is something I’ve never done, is very exciting to me.”

She continued: “What’s so great about what I’m doing in being style editor at large it’s kind of like I get to encompass everything I love to do. I’ve always been one of those people that goes back and forth in this business in different ways, so I get to really do great fashion stories with Edward and I’m also going to be working with [editor at large] Lynn Hirschberg and bringing fashion into the element of the actors that we shoot and kind of being the thread through all the different areas.”

Goldstein will work exclusively for W and can't work for competitors (ie other American fashion monthlies) but can work for non-direct competitors like Vogue Italia if given approval by W editor Stefano Tonchi. Tonchi said in a statement: “I have an incredible amount of respect for Lori, and admire her imagination and impeccable taste. Even on a freelance basis, Lori has been an integral part of the new W. She has styled some of our best covers, including Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, Mia Wasikowska, and January Jones. Given the recent expansion of W’s fashion team, I thought it was the perfect moment in time to formalize this relationship."

With Goldstein now in the W fold, is it possible that her frequent collaborator Steven Meisel might also become a regular contributor to the magazine? “We will see,” she replied coyly.

Dasha Zhukova Confirms She's Launching a New Magazine

>> There have been rumors circulating in the last couple of months that Dasha Zhukova - since resigning from POP last November - was working on a new magazine. Now, she confirms the rumors are true.

Dubbed Garage (the same as her flagship Moscow museum, the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture), it's set to launch in September and will be an art magazine with a strong fashion angle. "It's going to be a girls' magazine," Zhukova says. "I have more ideas than I know what to do with. I guess I'm a bit of a fantasist and a daydreamer - all sorts of things come to me during the day."

She's also enlisted former Vogue Paris editor Joan Juliet Buck as a consultant for the magazine, as well as Vanessa Traina. "I'll set projects up and hand them over," Zhukova explains. "I'm a delegator and I find that quite easy. I feel I do it intuitively. But I have to trust that the people I work with are going to make decisions I approve of."
