Lyn Devon Takes Her Fall 2010 Girl to the "Beatnik Ballet"

>> Lyn Devon's goal is to become "the fresh voice in American luxury sportswear." In her SoHo basement studio today, she showed off her latest effort in "reinventing the classics": but instead of sticking to her usual straight, sharp tailoring, she was inspired by images of ballet and dance to give her silhouette a little more movement. Hence, her Fall 2010 "beatnik ballet" collection: Devon suggests countering the newfound looseness of her dresses with a black turtleneck and a belted waist. But when it comes down to it, she's all about catering to her customer - she says her hand knits, leathers, and prints do really well, and this season, she ventured into more eveningwear options, just because her clients asked.

Lyn Devon Fall 2009 Look Book

Young designer Lyn Devon, who launched her label in 2005, wanted customers to "dress on the bright side" this Fall. In her collection, vibrant purple, deep red and an optimistic poppy print appear alongside dark classics. The effect is dramatic and sophisticated, optimistic but not at all ditzy. Texture is also considered this season with houndstooth, ultra-thin leather and tech jersey coming together in different combinations. The overall effect is an ultra-clean, sophisticated take on modern sportswear which will hopefully get Devon into many more stores next season. Fall 2009 New York Trend Report: Red Is The Color Of The Season

We just had to wait until after Valentine's Day to say this--we're thinking red is the hot color for Fall 2009. Not only have head-to-toe red looks come together from Lyn Devon and 6119 Ilana Sunderland, but, last night, Ruffian sent their red-clad models down a matching runway. Combine the monochromatic examples with the glimpses of it at Rag & Bone (and color is hard to come by with those gents), the transparent instances at Verrier, and the ruby prints at Karen Walker, and you've got yourself a pretty strong case for the color.

Fall 2009 Could Be the Death of More Promising Designers

>> Fall 2009 is "the make or break season" for small designers, according to Eric Wilson of The New York Times. Stores are reducing their orders by 20 percent or more for Fall, and some are already trying to cancel their Spring orders, which puts small businesses, especially those without independent financial backing, in a tenuous position. Basically, Wilson points out, "The more stores that close, the more designers will follow." And in show season, the cost of samples and putting on a show doesn't help with the strain.

Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Winner Lyn Devon

Lyn Devon's understanding of cool, American sportswear has made her the recipient of a Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation award this year.. Devon, a 23 year old New York native, got her started working for Zac Posen and Ralph Lauren before launching her own label in 2005. Since then the designer has been quickly gaining momentum with positive reviews from WWD and Style.com in addition to countless magazines credits. Her Spring 2009 collection featured practical sportswear-inspired pieces that balanced masculine and feminine silhouettes beautifully. Ecco Domani announced their 2009 Fashion Foundation award winners today. The recipients are Lyn Devon, Matthew Ames, Cushnie et Ochs by Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, and Ohne Titel by Alex Adams for womenswear, Corpus by Jerrod Cornish & Keith Richardson for menswear, and Monique Pean for jewelry, Eviana Hartman and Samantha Pleet for sustainable design.

WWD talks with Jane Birkin about her cashmere pieces for Lutz & Patmos and her oldest pair of UGG boots. We never thought we'd say this but UGGs are getting a lot of good press these days.

>> The Sundance Channel is on a mission to amp up their fashion coverage. They just launched Catwalk Countdown, a series of ten one-minute online videos highlighting designers like Erin Fetherston, Vena Cava, Lyn Devon, Chris Benz - Benz talks how he produces 98 percent of his collection within a two-block radius of his Manhattan studio, for instance - and now they're bringing back popular fashion documentarist Loic Prigent for a second season of his The Day Before series.

Prigent, who captured the likes of Sonia Rykiel, Proenza Schouler, Fendi, and Jean Paul Gaultier for the show's first season, is currently in New York, where he will film Alexander Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Narciso Rodriguez, and Jeremy Scott each in the 36 hours leading up to their shows. Prigent has been granted "full access," he told The Cut, "[because] we are discreet . . . [so designers] forget we are even there."
