>> BLOWING THE COVER —W Magazine is ringing in the new year with a model on the cover of their January 2009 issue — Christy Turlington — but don't expect it to be a trend. Arianne Phillips — who just finished costuming Tom Ford's directorial debut A Single Man — is headed to Rio de Janeiro later this week to shoot an upcoming W cover with Madonna and Steven Klein. Their last collaboration produced the iconic 2006 Equus-inspired shoot, so hopefully this round will be just as picturesque — and will probably include more Louis Vuitton. Marc Jacobs's New Nose, No-Nonsense Sensibility

>> As Marc Jacobs evolved from dorky Marc to Marc the personality, he's acquired a fake tan, muscles, a new diet, over thirty tattoos . . . and apparently a new nose. No word on when it was done, but his nose was "made broader by artificial means." Why? According to Marc, "I walked into a door once, and I thought it looked really hot."

As for Lorenzo Martone, Marc's current boyfriend — he doesn't have to worry about competition from Marc's ex-boyfriend Jason Preston:

"I’ve had boyfriends who were media whores, and, God bless them, they were great people. I shouldn’t have said that; that wasn’t nice to say. I was in a relationship for the past couple of years with someone who loved the attention of the media. I don’t want to make the same mess again."

Chanel Brings Moscow to Paris

>> The economy doesn't seem to have touched Louis Vuitton or Chanel one bit. While some major American designers are cutting back their advertising and looking at runway alternatives, Vuitton is keeping their Spring 2009 media placement and ad budget on par with one year ago — a budget analysts have estimated to be more than $250 million annually.

And Chanel? Well, Karl just staged a full runway show — plus movie — for a Pre-Fall collection, when most designers do a presentation at most. Chanel's pre-Fall — in this case, Paris-Moscow — collection was established to showcase the skills of the house's couture ateliers, so the extravagance goes without saying. The dresses may be expensive, but Karl waved off any mention of the economy: "These dresses come out in six or seven months from now, and the world may have changed by then." And the annual tradition which has carried through Paris, New York, Tokyo, Monte Carlo, London, and this year Moscow will continue on next year in another emerging market: Shanghai.

She says of designing the SC that she "definitely" didn't want it to be black — "people wear so much black that it's nice to have a bag that's a different color." Madonna Works It for Louis Vuitton Spring 2009

>> The casting for the Spring 2009 Louis Vuitton campaign? Blame it on a Madonna concert. The night before Marc Jacobs had a brainstorming meeting, he had attended a Madonna concert in Paris: "I was totally just blown away by it, and moved by her performance, by what she had to say, and her energy." He emailed Madonna on his BlackBerry right then and there, and within five minutes came the reply: "I'd love to."

As rumored, Madonna was indeed captured in six images at Figaro in LA by Steven Meisel, marking the end of a six year partnership between the brand and photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. This seems to be the first of many collaborations between Meisel and Louis Vuitton — Antoine Arnault, the brand's director of communications — said it's "very probable" the association will continue. As for the rumored $10 million fee Madonna commanded? Arnault dismissed it as "absurd": "It’s very far away from that."

>> The 2009 Vogue Paris calendar — which comes as a supplement to the December/January issue — arrived a little early. Fourteen different girls are featured, photographed by Terry Richardson and styled by Carine Roitfeld as pinups in Louis Vuitton lingerie and shoes. Jourdan Dunn is a sexy nurse, Ali Michael a sexy cheerleader, Eniko Mihalik graces the cover as sexy kitten — Carine even included a spread for the solar months, with patrons saints Alber (Elbaz), Gareth (Pugh), Lara (Stone), and their ilk celebrated.

>> ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL —Louis Vuitton doesn't appear to be hurting — word is they've shelled out $10 million for Madonna to be the face of the Spring 2009 collection, as captured by Steven Meisel. The shoot appears to have gone down last Friday: Marc Jacobs was spotted in LA last Thursday, reports came that it all went down the next day at Cafe Figaro in LA, and Madonna was photographed Friday looking like she had just come from a photoshoot.
