Lorick Fall 2009 Look Book

Designer Abigail Lorick was a model in Paris and head designer at T S Dixin before she launched her own line in the Spring of 2007. Her Fall 2009 look book was inspired by French New Wave film and was photographed by Tom Hines who also shot the Samantha Pleet and Safe Spring 09 look books. The look book captures the cinematic, retro, haunted quality of Lorick's clothing, which makes frequent appearances on the equally dark television show, Gossip Girl.

In The Showroom: Lorick Spring 2009

The Lorick Spring 2009 presentation was so brimming with eye candy, we thought it might not be quite as brilliant to see the collection dangling from a rolling rack--au contraire. The Spring 09 collection can be most accurately described as playing with every vintage silhouette and fabric you always wished you'd dig from the racks of your local thrift store to no avail. These garments merit lace gloves and red lipstick and should (and will), among other things, bring ladylike fashion back en vogue for the twenty-somethings. Just like the vintage costumes they reference these pieces are heavy and substantial in person. These are not garments meant to merely resemble the clothing of another era--they actually rival them. There were, of course, some entirely modern pieces in the collection, like easy silk tanks and cotton shorts, and they mixed nicely with the costumery as neither category went too far down its own path. Gossip Girls Become Lorick Ladies Tonight

>> Talk about turnaround. Just over two weeks ago, Abigail Lorick was showing her Spring 2009 collection to buyers and editors, and tonight, she shows it to the rest of the TV-watching world. Ten looks from the collection will be featured on "Eleanor Waldorf's runway" during Gossip Girl tonight, with guest star Michael Kors sitting front row and center.

>> Abigail Lorick's Spring 2009 Lorick collection will be appearing on an episode of Gossip Girl shortly for public consumption, but first, she staged a presentation today, because let's face it - seeing clothes on TV isn't the same as seeing clothes in real life.

What a presentation it was - a whole floor occupied by seven different elaborate pastiches - "After the Storm," "Demolition Party," "A Room of One's Own," "Overgrown Garden," "Bedroom Disaster" - and my favorite two: the chandelier and TV-laden "In Limbo," and the saccharine "Cake Coma." The set design was amazing, and slightly reminiscent of a presentation Vena Cava did a couple of years back - but nevermind. This one was better.

Lorick is Lovely

The process of curating an impeccable experience is what gets you paid the bug bucks in the land of cultural creatives. Being able to evoke the here and now even while clearly stating that this is your aesthetic is a skill that everyone wants but few have. Abigail Lorick clearly has it. Her Spring 2009 collection is an impressive demonstration of her grasp of the new louche pretty young thing. The scenes gave the clothing a chance to come out as as a lifestyle and not just good styling.

The classic dichotomies of Uptown versus Downtown, good girl versus bad girl, City versus Country, all come out to play. The inability to settle on one particular identity for us marks the kind of entitled and extended adolescence to which an entire generation strives (or rebels depending on how much you embrace the Organization Kid). It is the give and take of this struggle that helps define the Lorick experience even as it ultimately settles on a kind of sophisticated adulthood that its giggling enjoyment belies.

Her rich use of textiles for us was most impressive. Duchess satin for spring is adventurous and exciting. The use of greens was punchy against both pastoral and urban backgrounds. Tea and day dresses felt a little bit like dress up but as long as we have tea and cake we won't complain a bit. Please Click Here to enjoy our full slide show of the collection.

For Lorick, It Pays To Gossip

>> For emerging designers, there are many routes to success — toting samples around in a suitcase a la Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs, or you could just get your entire first collection on Gossip Girl, like Abigail Lorick.

Placement on such a buzzed-about show has landed her Lorick collection mentions in everywhere from Elle to WWD to Teen Vogue, and for her first New York Fashion Week presentation this September, she's keeping it all in the family: Gossip Girl stars Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, and Taylor Momsen are all expected to make appearances, and the show's costume designer, Eric Daman, is working with Abigail on the Spring 2009 collection.

If you can't make it to the fashion week presentation, you're in luck — ten pieces of the Spring 2009 collection will debut on Gossip Girl a week later as "Eleanor Waldorf's runway collection" — presumptively in the same fashion week episode Michael Kors is appearing in. Kudos to Abigail for building such buzz around her label so quickly — but it will be interested to see if it has legs on its own — the show can't go on forever, after all.
