>> Lizzie Fortunato, like Derek Lam and Proenza Schouler, was inspired by midcentury American architecture for Spring 2012. Her favorite pieces from the collection are the result of a collaboration with Arthur Kemelman, a woodworker from Israel who hand-carved a necklace and bracelet and then painted them with gold leaf. She says, "Each piece of wood is unique. . . . and the result is exquisite."

The label's handbag offering, too, continues to grow: "We have been working with craftworkers in India, who do the most exquisite embroidery and beadwork for our jewelry, and we figured we need another way to showcase this beautiful handiwork - bags were the obvious outlet for that."

In the introduction to the look book, Fortunato describes her Fall 2009 customer as "the sophisticated city girl who's packed up her urban lifestyle in favor of her boyfriend's Harley, roadside diners, and great adventure." Lizzie Fortunato For VPL Spring 2009

The VPL show turned out to be one of our favorites this Spring 09--however understated and, well, understood is the VPL aesthetic there was something in the air that made an impact. Maybe it was just the right timing; a relatively subdued break in the insanity of fashion week, or maybe it was the crowd; Sally Singer and the Voguettes were front and center, or maybe it was...the jewelry. The jewelry in the VPL show was delicate and beautiful, geometric, handmade, special--it was something that enhanced the clothing without distracting us from it. Today we put two and two together and realized the jewelry was designed by our friends at Lizzie Fortunato jewels. The line is, in fact, all of those adjectives and then some and, we are too excited about this, the jewelry we saw in the VPL show makes up what will be the Spring 09 collection. Prepare yourself for heart palpitations...
