Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone Get Their Beach On With Kate Moss

>> Honeymoon or not, Marc Jacobs and Lorenzo Martone have landed off the coast of Ibiza in Formentera, spending some quality time with Kate Moss and Lila Grace on the beach yesterday. Lorenzo may not have "Marc Jacobs" tattooed on his forearm like Marc's former beau Jason Preston, but he did show his brand loyalty by carrying a Richard Prince Louis Vuitton for a beach bag.

Lila Grace looked shy while Kate and Lorenzo were chatting it up, but she pulled out a camera to snap a portrait of the group later. Kate, Sir Philip Green, and now Marc Jacobs — the Ibiza area is definitely still the fashion vacation destination of choice.

Models Get Their Due at 2009 Costume Institute Gala

>> Hints at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala theme have been swirling since May - first, it was thought to be an ode to Marc Jacobs, and then an ode to fashion muses. Now that the official announcement has come out, we learn that both subjects are involved, just not quite in the way that was originally thought: the May 4 gala rings in "The Model as Muse," with Marc Jacobs as honorary chair, and Kate Moss, Anna Wintour, and Justin Timberlake as co-chairs.

The accompanying exhibit, which runs May 6 to Aug. 9, will explore the evolution of models and "their roles in projecting and sometimes inspiring the fashion of their respective eras," with special focus on one of the first publicly known models, Marion Morehouse; the first supermodel, Lisa Fonssagrives; fifties mannequins Suzy Parker, Dovima, Sunny Harnett, and Dorian Leigh; sixties icons Jean Shrimpton, Moffitt, Twiggy, and Veruschka; Seventies faces Jerry Hall, Iman, and Janice Dickinson; the supermodel trinity of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell; Nineties “It” girls Kate Moss, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Shalom Harlow; and more recently, Gisele Bundchen.

As Harold Koda, curator of the Costume Institute, explained: "We look at the power of clothing, fashion photography and the model to project the look of an era. With a mere gesture, or the line of her body, a truly stellar model can sum up the attitude of her time, creating an alluring synergy between herself and the clothing to communicate a designer’s message to the wider world."

Seventy haute couture and ready-to-wear looks, plus photography, runway images, and video footage of models, rock stars, socialites and actresses who set the tone for each era will emphasize the theme, but most exciting of all - think of all the models who will be representing at the gala.

Manolo Blahnik Makes a Comeback, Is Again in Demand

>> After being overtaken for a few years by Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik is back in the spotlight. Recent deliveries of a particular Manolo pump sold out so fast, Bergdorf Goodman had to institute a waiting list. “Manolo’s shoes are very much in the spirit of this moment’s clothes, pared down, with simple lines, and I hate to say ladylike, but classic,” said Linda Fargo, SVP for women’s fashion at the store.

“We do a very, very strong business in his shoes,” added Jonathan Joselove, SVP and merchandise manager for Neiman Marcus, noting that the stores have difficulty keeping certain Manolos in stock.

As the New York Times points out, Kate Moss wore a classic pair of Manolos for her wedding this past Summer, and Sarah Jessica Parker was shot exclusively in the Blahnik BB pump in the August issue of Vogue. “I walked in [for the shoot] and looked around and saw all these shoes, and then I spotted the Manolos and it was like water in a desert,” Parker explained. “I was just so excited to see a simple black pump.”

Of Louboutin's more embellished shoes and signature red soles, George Malkemus, president of Manolo Blahnik USA, says: “It was a chic idea for a minute. You wore a red sole, and everyone knew you spent $1,200 or $1,400 for your shoes. And I would say there was a period when certain customers abandoned us and moved into that world.” But, as Blahnik himself added last week: “The gimmicky thing I’m not very keen on. I’ve never been tempted to do these hideous furniture shoes.”

>> INSIDER WIRE -It was appropriate that the same day Anna Wintour went on record citing preference for actress Vogue covers, the supermodels boycotted her main event. Well, apparently it wasn't just all about the Alaia snub: they felt that they should have had co-hosting duties alongside Kate Moss. Only thing is, Kate had the money to back her up - Sir Philip Green supposedly paid up to make it all happen. The Imagist warns about expecting another Vogue model cover anytime soon, but the editors over at Harper's Bazaar are supposedly at work recreating the iconic Peter Lindbergh motorcycle shoot with all the supermodels. Costume Institute Gala To Be Supermodel Trinity-Less?

>> This year's Costume Institute Gala is upon us in just a few short hours, and while we kept getting spurts of who's attending and who's not all last week, more details keep rolling in. While Kate Moss spent the weekend before the big day in Monaco on Sir Philip Green's yacht, rumors surfaced that none of the supermodel trinity - who along with Kate and the rest of the models of their time are supposed to be the focus of the event - are planning on showing, prompting some to wonder if they're upset Moss was chosen as co-chair over them.

Christy Turlington, who attended last year, confirmed that she is not attending today: "I would have been there with absolute pleasure, but I am out of the country filming a documentary about maternal health. I have regularly attended this event . . . and would have loved to have been there this year, especially because Kate was hosting." No word from Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell to deny the reports, and no designer has confirmed either as their guest, although last week rumors circulated that Naomi was aiming to blow everyone at the event away, and she was supposedly in New York over the weekend for a housewarming party.

But a couple of other attendees have been revealed . . . »

Logically, if they keep up their partnership, Linda Evangelista should be up next season . . .

Amber Valletta Joins the Spring 2009 Supermodel Threat for Loewe

>> The supermodel campaign wave that started in Fall 2008 just keeps expanding in Spring 2009 - we've got Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangelista for Dsquared2, Gisele Bundchen and Kate Moss for Versace, Stephanie Seymour for Valentino, Claudia Schiffer for Yves Saint Laurent, and now, Amber Valletta in a stunning campaign for Loewe. The move is logical, since brands are looking to squeeze out every penny they can this season, and these models are known to drive the money. As for this set, Steven Klein did the honors - props to Stuart Vevers for the art direction, which is surely going to help him on his mission to bring Loewe back to the forefront.
