Prabal Gurung, Sophie Theallet, Justin Giunta Among Inaugural Fashion Incubator Designers

>> The CFDA Fashion Incubator, announced last October in partnership with New York City's Mayor Bloomberg, has its first twelve tenants. Among those named as part of the inaugural group of designers: Alice Ritter, Bibhu Mohapatra, Prabal Gurung, Sophie Theallet, Gemma Redux's Rachel Dooley, Grey Ant's Grant Krajecki, House of Waris's Waris Ahluwalia, Jolibe's Joel Diaz, Lewis's Alison Lewis, Public School's Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, Ruby Kobo's Yuvi Alpert and Danna Kobo, and Subversive Jewelry's Justin Giunta.

The designers each received two-year leases on design studio spaces ranging from 800 to 1,000 square feet at 209 West 38th Street in Manhattan, with subsidized, below-market rental rates of between $1,500 and $2,000 per month. To earn a spot, the designers had to submit a business plan, show they had "substantive editorial coverage" and orders from high-level retailers, have been in business for over a year and a half, and be supporting a staff.

Way back in the good old days (aka the beginning of Fashion Week) we brought you some snapshots and look book images from the Lewis Fall 2009 presentation. Turns out, there's also a video look book for the collection and we think it perfectly captures the spirit of the brand. The message: these printed silk separates and vintage-inspired frocks--save for friends and maybe a bottle of wine--are all a gal really needs.

Fall 2009 Fashion Week: Still Necessary, Just with Less of Everything

>> Designers may be pulling their belt tighter this Fashion Week, but hardly any are pulling out of the rat race altogether - the attention is too valuable. "You kill a thousand birds with one stone, because you get that many people there in an hour and you're getting one message across to them," says Scott Sternberg of Boy and Band of Outsiders. "They're writers and photographers and culturally indulgent people with loud mouths."

Instead, designers are saving by hosting presentations instead of runway shows (Monique Lhuillier, Temperley London, and Carmen Marc Valvo), inviting fewer guests (Marc Jacobs and DKNY, who's slicing her usual 1,000 down to 400), sending email invites instead of by mail (nearly everyone), or showing fewer looks to save on fabric and sample-making costs.

Tom Ford Reportedly Scored Givenchy, McQueen Design Team Members for Womenswear Launch

>> It was hinted earlier this month that Tom Ford was actively recruiting for his womenswear design team; now comes word that he has hired Caroline Tixier, a women’s ready-to-wear designer at Givenchy, and Pablo Coppola, an accessories designer at Alexander McQueen, although neither a Tom Ford spokeswoman or Ford's business partner Domenico De Sole would comment to confirm.

Speculation out of Europe sets Ford's return to womenswear for just less than a year from now during the Fall 2011 season. The designer is said to be thinking of starting up again with a presentation instead of a runway show, set in either New York or Milan. He's also reportedly in the process of squaring away launch exclusives with top retail partners.

UPDATE: Word is Ford has also hired shoe designer Michael Lewis, who has collaborated with Ford at Gucci, Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, and Christopher Bailey at Burberry. [Fashionista]

>> 2011 is feeling like the year of the wedding, and model weddings are no exception - between Kate Moss and Jamie Hince's impending nuptials in July, Anja Rubik and Sasha Knezevic's upcoming Summer wedding, and Natasha Poly's ceremony this past weekend.

The 25-year-old Poly married businessman Peter Bakker at Saint Tropez's Hotel Byblos as part of a three-day celebration, wearing a traditional white Givenchy gown. About 200 guests attended, including Carine Roitfeld and Peter Dundas, and Leona Lewis sang at the reception.

John Galliano Releases Apology Statement Denying His Anti-Semitism, Makes No Mention of Video

>> John Galliano, who left France yesterday to enter rehab - reportedly at The Meadows facility in Wickenberg, Arizona, where Donatella Versace went for treatment - after close colleagues and friends like Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss persuaded him to go for his alcohol problems, has finally broken his silence. It sounds like Galliano's lack of communication since Thursday has not just been with the public: an unnamed Dior executive commented that the designer remained in seclusion at home over the weekend, and did not try to contact his employer to explain himself or offer an apology before he was fired.

Galliano's statement, released by law firm Harbottle and Lewis, in full, below - although he makes no mention of the video:

“Since the events of last Thursday evening I have not been able to make any public comment on what took place based upon advice from my French lawyer. However, given the continuing delays at the French Prosecutor’s Office I should make my position clear.

“I completely deny the claims made against me and have fully co-operated with the police investigation.

“A number of independent witnesses have given evidence and have told the police that I was subjected to verbal harassment and an unprovoked assault when an individual tried to hit me with a chair having taken violent exception to my look and my clothing. For these reasons I have commenced proceedings for defamation and the threats made against me.

“However, I fully accept that the accusations made against me have greatly shocked and upset people.

“I must take responsibility for the circumstances in which I found myself and for allowing myself to be seen to be behaving in the worst possible light.

“I only have myself to blame and I know that I must face up to my own failures and that I must work hard to gain people’s understanding and compassion. To start this process I am seeking help and all I can hope for in time is to address the personal failure which led to these circumstances and try and earn people’s forgiveness.

“I have fought my entire life against prejudice, intolerance and discrimination, having been subjected to it myself. In all my work my inspiration has been to unite people of every race, creed, religion and sexuality by celebrating their cultural and ethnic diversity through fashion. That remains my guiding light.

“Anti-semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologise for my behaviour in causing any offence.”
