Levi's Artistically Interprets Its Fall 2010 Collections For Women and Men

Levi's took over the Hosfelt gallery in far West Midtown last Wednesday night to showcase its upcoming Fall denim lines. If its collection is the future of jeans, it's going to look a lot like the past - think skinnies, misc. paint splatters, and intermittent embellishment.

More interesting was the event's concept. Thirty or so models decked out in the collection and on a dais were a visitor's first sight. They were surrounded by a series of photographs commissioned and inspired by Levi's. With neon signs spelling out artsy maxims on the walls, the British band One Eskimo set up in a corner and crooned to the crowd. It was definitely a case of sensory overload, but it was a good way to draw attention to a new collection full of old staples.

Dirty, Dirty Denim: Levi Strauss & Co. Sues Evisu Over Tribute Jean

Denim is a notoriously cutthroat business, as documented in Douglas Keeve's Dirty Denim series on the Sundance Channel.

The latest jeans saga puts Levi's up against Japanese jeans company Evisu. Only weeks after Scott Morrison, current chief executive of Evisu and founder of Paper Denim & Cloth, shared plans for a Levi's-inspired collection called Tribute, Levi Strauss & Co. accused Evisu of violating a 1999 agreement between the two firms. In an interview with Dazed Digital, posted two days ago, Morrison said of his autumn/winter collection for Evisu:

"We used the word ‘reference’ as a starting point. It’s obviously a broad term, but the idea was to go back to Evisu’s love affair with Levi’s, Americana and especially the 1944 Levi’s 501 XX. The history is that during the war, the US government forbade all use of unnecessary fabrics. So Levi’s had to stop sew on the thread on the back of each jeans back pocket, and they painted them on instead. Hence the Evisu painted on seagull logo! There’s a great 'reference' tradition within Evisu and we took that thought process and applied to key items from history. We wanted to start re-telling the origins of how Evisu came into being."

Morrison also told WWD earlier in March the collection "would pay homage to Levi’s 1944 501 jeans, its 1890 'Nevada' pair and its 1917 'Campbell' jeans."

Where reference ends and a violation of copyright begins is a very fine line in fashion.

Levi's Partners With Opening Ceremony On Spring Corduroy Collection

Opening Ceremony loves an American heritage brand collaboration and has most recently co-designed pieces for classics like Keds, Pendleton, and Timberland. During New York Fashion Week next month the retailer will debut its newest lineup designed in partnership with Levi's. The collection of corduroy basics- button-up shirts, jackets, and trousers-will be available in eight spring colors inclucing fuchsia, teal, lavender, beige, curry, olive, navy, and white, proving workwear staples never go out of style.

Fashion in 50 Seconds 10/30 with Maison Martin Margiela, Rebecca Minkoff, and Damien Hirst

In business they say "always be closing" but in fashion it is "always be delivering" and Maison Martin Margiela is taking that to heart with a collection they are calling Avant Premiere that will be unveiled to the trade late next month and delivered to stores in May. A Margiela spokeswoman told WWD the collection would consist of about 60 styles for women and 60 for men, plus a small selection of shoes and accessories: less expansive than many pre-collections.

With a little help from stylist Ilaria Urbinati handbag designer Rebecca Minkoff is relaunching her contemporary clothing collection. Minkoff said they were inspired by Elizabeth Taylor in the Fifties and the darkness of the 1982 film “Blade Runner.” We have never before associated the two and are having a hard time making the leap looking at the garments.

Erin Fetherston Has Her Work Cut Out for Her at Juicy Couture

>> Erin Fetherston was hired as guest designer and creative consultant at Juicy Couture in April, three months after the label's co-founders and co-designers Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy gave up their day-to-day responsibilities to launch their own label next year. Fetherston will design for Juicy Couture until the end of 2011, and has already shown a Holiday 2010 collection, which included "bugle-beaded blazers, sateen-trimmed jackets and beribboned draped skirts to bustier dresses," WWD writes.

While she's only contracted to design the Holiday and Fall 2011 Juicy Couture collections, Fetherston definitely has some legwork to do for the brand. When Fetherston was brought in earlier this year, retailers had been complaining about Juicy Couture's fit and quality, and said the line needed to be reinvigorated.

New Check-In Technology May Keep New York Fashion Week Gate Crashers at Bay

This season, instead of sending out paper fashion show invitations that require check-in with publicists at the show doors like seasons past, designers will instead send email invitations with bar coded confirmations ahead of time, so attendees can check in and receive their seating assignments from airport-style kiosks at the venue.
