>> Kate Moss was supposed to be on Gossip Girl last season, Blake Lively told The Cut, "but it ended up not working out." That missed chance aside, Kate's collaboration with Topshop is still working out — her 11th collection comes out Aug. 31, and focuses on the grunge look, according to Kate: “This season’s grunge is all about being creative about how you put your look together, and not necessarily spending a fortune. It’s about being a little bit surprising and very creative. I love the glamour of adding some vintage to my look, and have done for years, as it keeps things original."
One of her favorite pieces from the collection, captured by Josh Olins below, is a black leather pencil skirt, she told the Times UK: “The shape is really lady, but the leather gives it a real grungy, cool, rock’n’roll feel, especially if you wear it with shredded tights and lived-in leather army boots."
>> Hussein Chalayanadmits that he's a "designer's designer," which is probably why he told WWD he's "weirded out by" models-turned-designers. This isn't anything new — in February of last year, he informed the Independent UK that he found Kate Moss designing "kind of insulting . . . because it's like saying — and I don't mean this personally — 'I can sell more clothes off my name, off my brand, than you can, even though you're a better designer.' "
He seems to have lightened his feelings on Kate specifically, and now says he views her Topshop line as credible, but he's still not totally convinced: “I don’t think it represented her, and I didn’t think she worked hard enough. I even told her to her face.” Her response, as he recalls, was: "‘Oh, I’m just trying to do a light thing; I’m not trying to do anything serious.' But I said, ‘That’s not the point.’”
>> IN PRODUCTION—Kate Moss's tenth collection for Topshop — the high Summer edition, inspired by her travels and full of sheer embroidered blouses, tie-dye tops, and print minidresses — hits stores and online tomorrow. As for the big dreamcatcher-style earrings she wears in the lookbook photos, those are not from her collection, but they are from the Freedom at Topshop main line. [FabSugar, Vogue UK, Daily Mail]
But those things might not be the only projects on Kate's plate. In a recent interview with the Telegraph, it appears that Kate slipped up and admitted that she's getting married — why else would she say "the wedding"?
An exquisitely beaded 1920s-style flapper dress that is draped over a chair catches her eye. "Ooh that would be great for the wedding." She pauses, suddenly realising the headline-worthy nature of what she has just said. "Not my wedding. A friend’s. No. I’m not getting married and my boobs haven’t grown because I’m lactating or pregnant."
But back to her Topshop collection — she's says it's evolved since round one.
"The first season was pieces that I loved which had been hanging in my wardrobe that I then tweaked and improved. It was great, but now I can’t wear any of it because, oh my God, all my favourite dresses have a Topshop label in them, ha ha. Now when I come into the office I’ll talk about things that I really want. It’s about what I think I am going to wear next season."
Sir Phillip Green, who earlier this year credited Topshop's record sales to the "Kate effect," reiterated his belief in Kate: "Having had two years experience, I am confident that Kate’s collection now has the potential to become a significant global brand within Topshop." Although he hasn't yet granted Kate's wish to do menswear, she will be expanding future collections into lingerie and accessories. Her next collection, for Spring 2009, will launch in March, to coincide with Topshop's New York grand opening. *image: source
>> Thatpanther minidress Kate Moss wore to Vivienne Westwood's show last month? It wasn't Vivienne, but rather a piece from Kate's holiday Topshop collection. According to Kate, she "found a similar dress to the panther one in a New York flea market when I was 17, and I’ve kept it ever since. I chopped off the bottom and used it as inspiration for this version."
The new Topshop collection launches on Oct. 28, full of "vintage-inspired blouses, brocade trousers, and floorsweeping sequined gowns," so Kate obliged the Sunday Times Style Magazine with an interview and a preview of the collection. It looks like we'll have to wait for another collection before we see a dress inspired by the red sequin "shampoo" dress Johnny Depp had made for her 21st birthday — as they were walking out the door to go to dinner, he grabbed a pair of scissors and lopped the bottom off — but maybe one of these new little black dresses will outsell her best-selling dress ever, the red pansy-print number, which sold 6,500 copies? *image: source
>> It's always a treat to see Kate Moss talk — since she doesn't log much on camera time, with the exception of all those Rimmel commercials — and it's even better when she's making silly faces, telling stories about catching girls in her Topshop line, and being all around cheeky. Last night, she did just that on the new BBC series British Style Genius, which for a few minutes follows Kate as she purrs and paws her way through Topshop meetings about her Fall 2008 line. If you're in the UK, you can watch the whole episode here, but we boiled all the good Kate parts into one for all below.
>> INSIDER WIRE —You don't have to complain about the unattractive exchange rate anymore — in one place, at least. Topshop.com launched their US site today, which means no more paying in pounds to have that dress shipped from far, far away. And while you're there, don't forget to check out the new Kate Moss for Topshop stock that just arrived — there's a cool black fringe jacket, does it have your name all over it? >> INSIDER WIRE —Those of you who are counting down the days until Topshop opens stateside, you're going to have to wait a little longer. Instead of opening the Manhattan flagship mid-October as promised, they've pushed the date back to November. But here's something to get excited about: Topshop.com is launching a dollar version of the site on Sept. 9 to coincide with the debut of Kate Moss's Fall 2008 collection — finally! [WWD]
