Karl Lagerfeld on Staying Thin, Being Human - and More

In addition to featuring a Lagerfeld-sketched cover, a tour of Lagerfeld's work space, and interviews with some of Lagerfeld's most famous cohorts - Haider Ackermann, Silvia Venturini Fendi, Florence Welch, Carine Roitfeld - "The World According to Karl" edition also provides quite a bit of insight into the mind of the Chanel helmer himself. Read on for highlights:

On being human: "I look the part. But I’m not that human, hm? But more down-to-earth than me, you will never find. You cannot be more down-to-earth."

On his diet: "I haven't touched sugar, sweets, butter, cake, cheese - all of that - for more than 11 years, and I'm not even tempted. I’m beyond temptation. I think that's the best thing that can happen in life."

On his weight: "I found out that clothes are much better than scales and things like this. Clothes don't lie. If you have only clothes in one size and nothing one millimeter bigger, the minute something hurts somewhere, you know it's time. And always keep a pair of tight jeans, something tight for control. I know a woman who every year put on her wedding dress just to see if she can still fit in it. It's only a problem if you have four or five weddings."

On his sex drive: "No, I'm not very much interested in that. But it's not a question of time, people can make quickies, you know."

On Lana Del Rey: "I prefer Adele and Florence Welch. But as a modern singer she is not bad. The thing at the moment is Adele. She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice. Lana Del Rey is not bad at all. She looks very much like a modern-time singer. In her photos she is beautiful. Is she a construct with all her implants? She's not alone with implants."

On people saying he's done too many collaborations: "I couldn't care less. It depends if I know the people. If unknown people say this, they should send me a note and explain why. The limit is up to me to decide."

On watching television: "I like to be on TV, but I don't watch TV. I have no time for that . . . I prefer to live on my imagination."

On death: "I couldn't care less . . . if you ask me, it's like a sleep where you don't wake up. You don't remember before, you don't remember after. The only thing is, I don't want to be seen dead, huh? So anyway, over, over. The battery is finished, huh? Pfft."

Rihanna will cohost a new fashion reality show in which unknown designers will face off, Project Runway-style. "This show is here to discover those people and give them a shot. >> "No '50s, no '60s, no '70s; just what I like," Karl Lagerfeld said of his Spring 2012 Couture collection for Chanel. Presented in an Air Chanel jumbo jet - built in the Grand Palais specifically for the occasion and complete with Chanel logo carpet, skylights, and airplane seats - the collection was a "monochrome rainbow" of blues, blacks, and creams, in straightforward silhouettes that moved easily from day to night. Suits, dresses, and jackets were structured and clean, with dropped waists, puffed sleeves, low pockets, and wide, stand-away necklines. For evening, there were tiered gowns and organza trapeze cocktail dresses glimmering with crystals, beads, sequins, and high-shine PVC.

>> We've seen a video teaser of Karl Lagerfeld's upcoming lower-priced Karl line, now, a few more looks - and details - have been released.

The collection, which launches Jan. 25 exclusively on Net-a-Porter for the Spring 2012 season, includes over 70 pieces (including pants, sweatshirts, skirts, shirts, dresses, t-shirts, shoes, and bags) in black, white, gray, silver, burgundy, and pink. Prices range from $50 for a canvas bag embellished with a cameo of Karl Lagerfeld's profile to over $1,000 for some of the leather pieces.

A few more detailed descriptions from the press release:

A sleeveless leather jacket is contrasted with a dress adorned with zippers.
A classic white shirt comes with a double-bib front in black coated cotton, and there are shirts with layered swimmer-back cuts.
Sportswear elements are evident, with some pieces boasting vinyl sleeves, athletic-inspired shorts, and rubber patches stamped with Karl's logo, reminiscent of a boxer's belt.
Also featured are shorts in heavy cotton with a buttoned fly and zippers on the thighs, as well as black wool pants with tuxedo stripes.
T-shirt dresses are draped in metallic-silk or cotton jersey, and there are also leather skirts, round-collar silk blouses, plunging zippered necklines on the back of short dresses, detachable collars, sequined skirts and dresses.

Preview Karl Lagerfeld's Upcoming Lower-Priced Karl Line

>> Karl Lagerfeld's new masstige Karl range will be available to buy exclusively from Net-a-Porter on Jan. 25, Natalie Massenet revealed this morning at the LeWeb conference in Paris.
Lagerfeld, also in attendance at the conference, previewed a video clip of the range - prices start at £150 (approx. $234) for a jacket - which can be seen below. He also talked about being "obsessed" with Apple, saying that he uses one of his several iPads to create videos - he filmed four web-only advertisements for Chanel last week - and to sketch out designs and ideas. To demonstrate, he showed the audience a sketch he did of Steve Jobs that morning, and then sketched himself on the iPad - the latter can be seen here.

>> Chanel's Pre-Fall 2012 Metiers d'Art runway show guests were seated at an elaborate banquet set up in the Grand Palais in Paris today, where they were served champagne, guava juice, tea, and miniature cakes and sandwiches. An antique silver train with the double-C Chanel logo ran around the central banquet table.
The Paris-Bombay-themed collection, inspired by the jewels, colors, and fabrics of India, was accented by nose rings and twisted dreadlock updos. John Lennon's "Instant Karma!" played on the soundtrack. More pictures will be added as they come in.
